How? Once a few days pass and literally nothing happens, and Congress continues to do nothing, he will bear responsibility for it.

So long as legally companies still have to withhold the money from your paycheck, if anything it's going to lead to anger in a few weeks when everyone gets that email from HR explaining why your pay hasn't changed at all.

Trump has major balls if he can pull this off.
He can't and won't. When does Trump ever do what he says he will. Let me guess, you also believe he signed preexisting conditions into law, and has a health plan that he just hasn't shared yet. This is nothing more than to try and trick Americans into thinking he's actually doing something, while accomplishing absolutely nothing. Guess it works on a few people that only want to think positively of Trump.

There is nothing he can't do. Republicans won't hold him accountable for anything.

He functionally can't do most of this stuff. Like if he signed an EO saying he can fly.

And also lol at these memos. It's insane how badly they understand the problem. The issue with convincing Americans to change things drastically is most Americans (the vast majority) don't think their lives are very bad. Even people living paycheck to paycheck, with payday loans and shit, still don't rate themselves as "lower class" or "poor."

COVID is different. It's killing people (undeniable), it's killing the economy (undeniable), and millions of people now don't know how they'll pay bills next month (or even this month!). All of that is not a perception problem, but that's how the GOP is viewing it. Their whole play since March has been "nothing is bad, it's all fake news to scare you." That works when you're white in a suburb and the hurting is in minority communities. It doesn't work when even well-educated professionals have dead relatives and layoffs hitting them!

Whats the point of deferring payroll tax if it just needs to be paid back . I can understand how that might work at the employer level but how would that even work at the employee level?

Would we still deduct the FICA taxes from employees and checks and hold it as a liability? If so.... how does that help the employee

The only way I see this working in favor for him is if congress does actually pass a bill here soon, and Trump starts to take credit for it. It obviously won't be because of him but he'll claim it for the masses that just watch facebook ads.

If anything this will just make the talks stall further. Democrats won't budge on 600 dollars and a stimulus...GOP will say "well the president already ordered 300 dollars."

Who the hell gets this payroll tax money? That's certainly not going on checks since it's withheld anyway.

Edit: Not that it's possible anyway, just wondering what nonsense it is.

So did he completely leave our student loans deferment even though saying he would continue it?

Cut in half. $300 +$100 from states.

Except even if it did work, which it won't, he left it up to the states to fund it. There's nothing to say they have to. States can't make money out of thin air either.

People have been saying this for nearly four years and yet he's getting away with nearly everything he's set out to do. :/

Where would he get the money? Where do the states get the money?

Hopefully not. They need to hold their ground and publicly call out Trump on what he is doing.
In the end people need help, any help. I badly need that $1200 check to pay bills. As much as I don't like it, Republicans and Democrats have to meet somewhat in the middle here. $400 seems like a compromise. It seems some here are fine with us not getting a relief bill until after November because it will hurt Trump. Speaking as somebody that needs the help, I am not.

No. The $400 simply isn't enough. The $600 is what is needed and they can't compromise on that.

So 0$ for the next 3-4 months is ok then? Cool.

You're ignoring the reality of the situation: $600 is needed. Numerous economic studies have shown this.

$400 is not enough. It needs to be $600 to make sure the economy doesn't completely tank and to make sure that families can buy food and pay their rent. $400 is not enough for this.

There are other things that democrats can compromise on. $600 is not one of them.

I think people get too caught up in the messaging. Either the money will be there or it won't, and it won't. People will feel that.

Yeah, that's the point. They as well could have said that states will pay $600, it doesn't matter.

You're acting like Republicans care. Yes $600 is needed. I can tell you right now, $400 is also needed, and now. Because Republicans will continue to play games until people are homeless and you better believe it.

I believe economists have concluded it has to be at least $600 a week to prevent further market contraction. In reality, it should be $600 extra per week for unemployed Americans and $1500+ per month for EVERY American. Congress and the President have completely failed this country and we're in for a long, painful recovery because of it.

$200 is "also needed" too. But you wouldn't settle on that when it doesn't do the job.
I think you are the one ignoring the reality of the situation. And that is, if Democrats and Republicans can't agree on a deal, the people will get nothing. And Republicans will just cry about this is all the Democrat's fault and they probably won't lose many voters because the stupid will believe it like always.

I'm not disagreeing with that at all. But the people that make the decisions, Republicans, don't care. And as much as I wish they don't have a say, they do. And a large one.

AP should do their fucking job, particularly considering other shit eating media down the line will just parrot their mistakes.
