Bungie believes Google Stadia is the best solution for testing games while its staff are working remotely -- a vital aspect of staying productive during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

For playtesting -- a crucial part of operating a live-service game like Destiny 2 -- Bungie landed on an unexpected solution.

"Another thing I'll throw out is Google Stadia: it looks like that's going to be our test solution," O'Kelley said. "Getting playtests at scale is a hard thing to do -- a lot of bandwidth involved -- so they've been collaborating with us to set that up and that looks like it's going to be a really amazing solution for us.

"It's not something we necessarily thought about initially but it looks like it's going to be a great way for us to keep getting regular playtests and do it pretty easily."

The impact of COVID-19 on game production is still unclear. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz recently, the CEO of co-development specialist The Streamline Group, Alexander Fernandez, predicted a rash of delays in the coming months.

"Those working in development are already seeing or feeling it," he said. "I believe it will take a quarter or two for the extent to become glaringly obvious through missed dates or development delays... I think we're going to really start feeling this in Q2, Q3."

Looking forward to the normal stream of thoughtful, measured responses we get in Stadia threads 'round these parts.

netflix and youtube are down-rezzing their content to meet bandwidth demand but stadia is a great solution?

Multiple games do have it. Division 2 is the latest and compared to my playing on PS4 pro and PC (limited to GeForce Now), it is by far the best version out there

That's a harsh warning. It was a joke and most people found it funny which meant it added value to the forum.

Oh well.
I thought it was kind of harsh too, but maybe I need to check the rules to see if jokes along the lines of a lighthearted ribbing are considered to be unwelcome on this forum. Don't really know where the line is.

This sounds more low marketing from bungie. Posting their games on stadia is not going to tell them how well it is running on other systems.

It does seem a bit hard to know what the line is here but I could see how the constant bandwagoning on something like Stadia without much effort could get old. Like we all laugh at Stadia but if it was the same joke for Xbox or whatever it's kind of consistent with their stance on fanboy-ish platform "warring".

I've seen similar stuff that never got any action from mods so it seems even they don't know

I think it is exactly that

Don't wanna veer this conversation off topic any futher, so I'm bowing out here, but Xbox rightly was the butt of many jokes during the Xbox One launch period, and had they not been maybe they'd not have been so compelled to try and turn things around. I don't think it's on posters to not poke fun at Stadia, I think it's on google to not operate it in a manner that makes it a laughing stock. But reasonable minds can differ on this so I'll leave it at that.

It's a good alternative to use if you already have a Linux game client, but if you don't, super hard to justify making one right now during these times.

Luckily we have the studio infrastructure in a really good shape so we don't have to use third party hosting platforms. The amount of risk they add is quite big.

Without mentioning that it completely derailed the thread. See how many posts are making any comments about the benefits of having multiple easy to access test computers available. This is especially useful in this situation.

Not really. As the developer above noted, this is only useful if you're one of the handful of Games on stadia.

I would love to hear how they do playtests and what challenges they run into. Perhaps we could do some knowledge sharing. :)

We do them every day in a 64p game, and things actually run fairly smoothly. Just now we finished a playtest with 60p all working from home.

"However, the potentially long period of remote work required during the pandemic means that every aspect of game development must be replicated.

"We've set up these beefy laptops -- we call them developer-grade laptops -- for people to work from home so they've been working really, really hard to get those set up so that we have that basically full-on, workstation capability at home for people," O'Kelley said.

"So that's been one of the hardest things -- literally just getting a couple hundred of these machines set up for people to take home."
