It blows my mind that a group of seemingly well educated ad execs don't understand there is no middle ground when one side is OK with overthrowing the government and executing there political rivals.

Springsteen is the man, but this is a really marvin milquetoast ad. Appreciate the sentiment, but there needs to be accountability and truth before there can be anything approaching reconciliation.

what these ad execs realize is that for a vast majority of the country (particularly in the demo that is going to buy a Jeep) this kind of ad is going to resonate with them and be viewed positively.

Why should unity automatically be the goal of a community or country? What if large parts of the community are doing something bad to other parts of the community. What if parts of the community have competing goals?

Trump didn't fuck anything up. Trump was about everything the Republican party has been about for 60 years, he just didn't hide behind dog whistles and civility.

Why SHOULD unity be a goal in a country that exercises imperialism and oppression? You want people to just smile and hug the systems that wrecks their lives and people abroad?

Oh please! We're angry because time and time again people like you take this moderate approach for unity like we're two sports teams arguing who's the greatest or whatever

I'd assume no one here on ERA wants divisiveness but infuriating when one side seem to believes the Joe Biden didn't win and the election was stolen. One side believes that the Corona virus is a hoax and mask aren't needed. one side believes this Q-anon bullshit that Joe/Hilary and other high profile dems an celebrities' are baby eating pedophiles, one side thinks BLM is a terrorist organization for simply protesting police injustice. one side believes it was okay to storm the capitol to overturn an election and to kill democrats. One side thinks it's okay to elect people like Steve King(he lost but still) Louie Gohmert, Majorie Taylor who have spouted absolute racist rhetoric; Marjorie is literally on tape thinking 9/11 was faked and harrasing a mass school shooting survivor.

Like where are we supposed to unify here? where's the common ground?

So yeah you are angry - and rightly so

But looking at history NOT going for unity (even if it seems impossiblr) anyway will only make things worse

what is realistically the alternative? Publicly branding of the other side in some way? Segregating even more?

really what?

The "middle" stuff is pointless. There is a clear divide on a socio-ethical level and it's impossible to compromise when it means abandoning the whole foundation of your belief system.

There is no rational debate possible when both sides are so fundamentally conflicting.

ah because the people who's only political motivations are to "drink liberal tears" actually want unity lol

you know who wants unity? the republican party, because they realize they fucked up the election and their reputation, and now calling for "unity" is their only way of stopping the Democrats agenda. It's entirely self-preservation meant to lower our guards so they can go back to the same shit they were doing before. No thanks.

Just a bizarre piece of historical analysis to me right here.

Virtually every time something good happened in US history it was incredibly divisive; the abolition of slavery, the Civil Rights movement, women's suffrage, the New Deal, feminism and gay rights.

I like some of Springsteen's music but overall he's seemed up his own ass the past few years. This ad doesn't help. It screams out of touch and is such a prime example of why I can't stand neo-liberals and moderates. It's almost like a parody, a bunch of empty platitudes designed to sell cars.

You can't unify with Trump supporters man. They are fucking terrorists.

Yes of course they do. Some awful takes in this thread. That sweet sweet negative justice mostly pushed by people of privilege in this country.

"Gosh guys why can't we all just get along? are things really that bad? I'm just above it all, you know? It's just politics. Let's just go back to pretending Black people aren't being murderer by cops and that a lot of White people aren't absolutely fine with that. Thanks!"

Thank you. If this country operated on unity we'd still have slaves and segregation and illegal gay marriage. The mostly White majority are always on the wrong side of history.

Things haven't changed either when you keep in mind that nearly half of the country would have been just fine with installing a dictator last election.

But please we need unity!

Yeah, I don't recall having calls for unity and meeting in the middle when Trump won, only hearing that "elections have consequences." But when Democrats win, suddenly we need to compromise and meet in the middle again.

It's funny because when Trump won Democrats never really asked for unity because we knew it wasn't possible especially when all Republicans took pride in how much they loved fucking over libs. Trump won get over it! Democrats are sick! Democrats are the enemy of this country! Radicals! Socialists!

They cheered every time Trump divided the country with his bullying and mocking of the left . The loved his executive orders. Then they denied he ever lost and were prepared to erase the will of 80 million voters in a free election.

Now that they are out of power the same exact people are all " well gosh what about unity! This country has always been about working together! So much for the tolerant Left!"

Just looking some of them up, it looks like the "we need unity as a country" moments are some of the worst in US history where horrible shit happened!

The compromise of 1850, the end of Reconstruction, Nixon's pardon, the War on Terror, letting the Bush admin off the hook post 2008, all precipitated by the reasoning there needed to be "unity".

There's a demo (right of center, not full blown fascist) that needs to hear "unity" messages. A lot of this talk makes sense if it's targeted at them in an attempt to deradicalize them. A lot of these calls for unity aren't meant for us, necessarily.

But airing this shit during the Super Bowl isn't it, that targets everyone in the most "why can't victim and victimizer just get along" kind of way. What a shit ad.

Any call for unity is disingenuous, there is no room for unity with a racist, oppressive segment of America. The US has made that mistake many times before, and the problem keeps coming back. The South had lost and Reconstruction began, but because we never took appropriate actions against the oppressors, they have used the time in-between to continually roll back civil rights, voting rights, and fundamentalist Christian ideologies on the country.

We suffer minority rule in the House and the Senate, where the conservative white voice is given disproportionate representation. These people have long believed that they are the only True American, True Patriot, True Christian, etc etc, you hear it all the time in their propaganda. Well, we recently went through a presidency where he gave these people a megaphone, and what we saw was a terrifying rise in white supremacist groups, right-wing militias and rightwing violence. Then they attempted to overthrow the government so this man would stay in power. 147 House republicans still voted to overturn the results of the election just hours after a failed coup, that we are still uncovering details about but it does appear that there were multiple conspiracies in play. A senate impeachment trial of this seditious man begins this week, but you will not see conviction because once again, there is no effort for unity when we can not punish or take responsibility for our own actions. What you all will see, however, is a bait and switch, where Republicans will do their best to switch the blame from Trump to Democrats.

There is no middle here, no common ground. This America is unapologetic, you hear it from the insurrectionists themselves: they would do it again. An overwhelming majority of Republicans >70% believe that the election was stolen. QAnon members have been elected to Congress, and they are supported while the old guard has been silenced by the far right.

It is extremely tone-def to call for unity in an America where so many have been attacked, and the attackers want no part in asking for forgiveness, reconciliation or a simple acknowledgement of blame and wrongdoing. They are actively working to blame the coup on Nancy Pelosi, ANTIFA, whoever in an attempt to bear no responsibility for their actions or the actions of their constituents.

The fastest way to make things worse is to continue to allow this to fester. Instead of asking for Unity, we should be asking for a reckoning of "the middle", because America heartland certainly does not lie in the middle, it lies in the far extremist right. We need to expose "the middle" for the lie that it is - and what it is: an apologist piece for right-wing white America.

Ever heard the term "we don't negotiate with terrorists"? Because they don't. Maybe you can compromise something else, somewhere else but democracy and the basic human rights are not to be compromised. Never, in America or anywhere else in the world. And if some folks want to use force to break them or destroy them, things should be "worse", there's no other way around.

If people don't want to be branded as terrorists, they should not act like one.

Not hanging every nazy supporter WAS "meeting in the middle".. basically hang the leaders, try to reintegrate the suckers (with economic support even).. andit worked, germany got back on its feet as a "good" country

do you think anything else would have produced a better result for the world and germany itself?

It's never about unity with Republicans; only avoiding accountability. That's especially true in the wake of the coup attempt that Trump incited and all the conservatives in Congress undermining our electoral process with blatant lies about the vote for months.

Whether calling them out on it is "divisive" or not doesn't change that. It's long past time the right earns the unity it says it wants.

Post WWII Germany has a strong De-Nazification policy in which the swastika and other Nazi symbols are illegal. Meanwhile MAGA idiots still fly the Confederate flag with impunity and we're only now taking down statues and memorials for Confederate soldiers.

I think it was smart for Jeep to run it. It probably hit their target audience pretty well as others have said. The question is what is wrong with Springsteen for agreeing to participate. He was probably paid handsomely, so that may be part of the answer. But even if the message better and it called out Republicans directly, it would still seem cynical because the goal was to sell Jeeps. Any political message would always be secondary to that.
