I've enjoyed the show even if I think it's undeniably copaganda. I'll be really curious how they handle this.

I love this show and the cast so much. I'm really glad the show can keep going and this good bunch of people can address the problems in the real police.

Or they can have Captain Holt be fired due to racist, homophobic cops at the top of the chain, and the main crew all follow him in opening their own private detective agency.

Keep the title, but everyone works in an ice cream factory where they specialise in selling cones with flakes in.

It's really weird for me, balancing how much I like the show with how much I hate cops. I just haven't watched it; it's not balanced anymore. I'm not sure what they can do, but I'm glad they're going to do something.

I'd be up for this. Could even get H. John Benjamin to play the head of a rival detective agency as a funny nod.

Good on them. Wish it covers defunding the police, systematic racism rather than bad apples, and systemic reform.

Good... personally i don't understand why they should cancel it! The show was often really progressive aside from some typical american ideas that don't sit right with me... And if they can do even better by sending good messages about how the police is fucked up, i'm all for it

One scenario I could see working is a time jump of a few years where they have all gone back to school during that time to study themselves into the kind of professions DefundThePolice is advocating we focus more of our efforts on (social service workers & such) & perhaps showing them working on cases involving drugs & problematic people/people with issues in society, except from a non-police work POV.

User banned (1 month): Dismissing concerns around police violence and systemic racism
They could have done another season just fine without grovelling like this its pathetic. Start the season with a disclaimer or a word from the cast and crew then carry on.

I just don't get it.

Systemic brutality and racism has been an issue from the start. Either they claim the issue is new in this world - which is fucking stupid. Or they suddenly discover it, which is also fucking stupid. Or they've always known, which is also fucking stupid.

This is a no-win situation and they shouldn't do it. Just change the show and use it as a means to talk about it that way. Maybe they will go that direction, but I'm not holding my breath.
Brutality hasn't been addressed much (from what I've seen, I'm 1,5 seasons behind), but corruption, racism & incompetence have been and in ways that they don't ever claim to have solved the issue. They acknowledge they are on-going, large scale issues and just kind of make a point of "we just have to keep fighting it whenever & wherever it manifests"

I don't know if the show could be saved by changing the setting at this point. It wouldn't be the same. I think it's done.

I started watching the show just before the death of George Floyd and it has been interesting watching the show in the wake of all the protests. I think I finally just got to a very real and emotional episode last night in Season 4 for the first time that takes on a cop that is very clearly racist towards Terry and he has to debate about filing a report with Holt. Most of the other episodes so far have had lighter touches of other systemic issues in a police department but haven't really taken anything on seriously.

It is tough seeing them get excited to use various heavy police tech. It is also really obvious how they are never in the wrong and that they almost never are just in the street patrolling or responding to calls where they have to react to live situations because they are detectives.

Yeah, they should just put the entire cast in another occupation no matter how nonsensical that would be. It's going to be hard getting the show back to tone without doing that.

I'll be curious to see what they do with the show.

Also maybe chill on the fat jokes please.

With the current environment I don't think they'll be able to successfully pull off another season. As mentioned before they could pull a gag and completely change the setting either in the same timeline or alternative for one more season and call it quits. The best move forward is for the creatives to move on to an entirely new show concept that includes as much of the current cast as possible.

For those claiming that the show doesn't need to adjust much or that it wasn't copaganda, I found this to be a good read for someone who has casually watched the show in the past: https://fourgetregret.tumblr.com/po...9-is-more-culpable-actually-all-cop-shows-are

I don't see a way forward that isn't totally abandoning the premise of the show, which I do not believe they will do.

There is no way they are going to build totally new sets and scrap the ones that exist. The show isn't that popular to handle that kind of change. I like going with the defunding angle, and make that the series arc.

A completely new show would be way more expensive than just reframing the current one. At that point it would be better to just let the whole thing go and not even try.

Never liked this show, the humor seems so bad to me, but props to them for doing this. Gotta be tough watching this show for people that do love it given everything going on in the world. Makes me want to give it another chance.

That's a show I would watch to learn more about systemic racism and social injustice. Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Glad they're doing this, but we will see what they decide to do. There's been a lot of stuff in that show that rubbed me the wrong way and wasn't even copaganda. (Peralta being ganged up on and essentially forced into changing his mind on having a kid left a super bad taste in my mouth)

To be honest though, if there wasn't a pandemic putting a strain on show biz right now I'm not so sure they would have completely thrown everything out and started over. I think the pandemic just made that a lot easier, but I guess that's neither here nor there.

The problem with detectives is that there's no reason for them to be cops TBH. Don't have detective be a promotion for cops, separate the jobs and start hiring people from all kinds of backgrounds like lawyers and accountants and researchers and give them detective training with the reformed idea of cops that are there for physical support in cases of arrests and such. The FBI does it like that I hear. A trained investigative forensics accountant is probably more a more valuable investigator then a beat cop that gets promoted after X years of traffic stops and apprenticeship in this day and age

Makes total sense and yes I agree it should be separated from beat cops

It's a complicated situation, because on one hand it's hard to do an actually honest and aware US cop show where the characters are anywhere near heroes, but on the other, if every socially progressive show about cops just entirely sidesteps the issue by changing the setting, then the only remaining cop shows will be full on copaganda, skewing the public perception even more. I have no clue how this problem can be solved in a way that is not just convenient for the showrunners, but also positive for raising social awareness long-term.

Just have a different company each week that they call the 'Nine Nine'

one week it's a post office, the next a plumbing company, then a gardening company, then a criminal organisatikn

fuck it just go nuts

Once a week may be a bit too much, but once a season could work well.
