"NOW: Bolsonaro speaks at the BRICS before Vladimir Putin, from Russia, and Xi Jinping, from China: Amazon, Federa Police, WHO

This morning, President Jair Bolsonaro participates in the XII BRICS Leaders Summit, held by videoconference. Bolsonaro began his participation by reiterating Brazil's efforts to preserve the environment and explained that he will soon reveal the biggest buyers of illegally harvested timber in the Amazon. Bolsonaro explained that the Federal Police developed a technology to identify the origin of wood and recalled the responsibility of countries that import illegal wood, pointing out that some of the biggest buyers are also the countries that most criticize Brazil.

Bolsonaro said that cooperation between the BRICS countries should encourage the freedom to create and undertake, and encourage greater cooperation between the private sectors of the countries' economies. The president pointed out the effects of the pandemic on economies and recalled that, from the beginning, he warned that health and the economy should be treated simultaneously and with the same responsibility. Bolsonaro recalled that he also criticized the politicization of the virus and the alleged monopoly of science by WHO.

Bolsonaro warned: 'We have to recognize the reality that it was not the international organizations that overcame challenges, but coordination between countries'. The president proposed reforms to international organizations and proposed that coordination between countries should be based on the defense of values such as freedom, transparency and security".

I would say name and shame them, but on the other hand, why would I believe any list of countries provided by Bolsonaro? It is more likely the countries not on the list are the culprits and the ones on it are the ones complaining about him.

I do feel like this is a way for Bolsonaro point fingers at others rather than crack down on it himself.

But hey, if this results in less of the rainforest being cut down, good.

Will his scientific process to determine the origin of wood also identify the legal status of the sale of said wood?

So.... he will be showing his receipts?

100% no. He will undoubtedly argue that the effectiveness of the 'technology' used to determine the wood's origin would be undermined if it was revealed how it worked. Not to say the accusations will be false, but it's much more likely that he knows because his government has a hand in the illegal logging (remember Bolsonaro has consistently and actively advocated for the deforestation of the Amazon, and the only reason it would be done under the table is for the benefit of foreign observers).

He would never show a list like that. Bolsonaro's a fascist, but he knows he is weak.

Already said here, but +1 to the comment that maybe he should do something to stop the practice.

Good, but is there any reason to believe him?

No. Theorically his goverment should not have that information since it only registers legaly bought wood.

but if he has it means he is like ... close to the people who sells it.
