Breonna Taylor’s Family to Receive $12 Million Settlement From City of Louisville (Published 2020)

In the aftermath of the botched police raid in which Ms. Taylor was killed, the city also agreed to institute changes aimed at preventing future deaths by officers.

Besides the multimillion-dollar settlement, among the highest to be awarded in a police killing in recent years, the city has also agreed to institute a number of changes in policing. They will impose more scrutiny on officers during the execution of search warrants, like the one that precipitated the death of Ms. Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency room technician, and make mandatory safeguards that were common practice in the department but were not followed the night of the March 13 raid.

Ms. Taylor died after her boyfriend said he mistook police officers for an intruder, as they rammed in the door of her apartment after midnight to execute a search warrant. He fired his handgun, striking one of the officers, setting off a response in which a torrent of bullets sliced through Ms. Taylor's apartment and two adjoining ones, leaving her bleeding in her hallway. There was no effort to render her aid, as the officers outside scrambled to get an ambulance for the wounded officer.

Right in the center of Trumpland. Money will not bring back a loved one tho.

but what about the cops that murdered her?

edit: ugh fuck off

The top demand of the protesters who gather nightly in a downtown square here has been that criminal charges be brought against the three officers. But because the officers were fired upon first, legal experts say their actions may be protected under Kentucky's statute allowing police officers to use lethal force in self-defense.

Basically here's some money now shut up about having cops thrown in jail for murder.

No amount is big enough. It's almost like enabling police brutality is a giant waste of state and local tax dollars... 🤔

The correct framing is that Louisville sacrificed $12 million of taxpayer money to avoid holding its officers accountable.

It's crazy they'd rather pay $12 million then just arrest and charge a handful of cops, but when you think about it the $12 million is from taxpayers and the police department probably aren't using any of their budget on it (nor will it be affected next time a budget is approved)

they just don't want to set a precedent of arresting officers that could spread because otherwise like 90% of cops would get arrested for the shit they do

Fucking New York Times article still says that the boyfriend shot the cop, when it's been proven weeks ago that the cops accidentally shot each other.

Louisville proper isn't Trumpland, and not even close to the center of where he's most popular. Policing problems are not some problem only in red cities and states, they're a problem everywhere.

The correct framing is that Louisville sacrificed $12 million of taxpayer money to avoid holding its officers accountable.

This.

They deserve to not have a dead family member. This is not justice. Tax payers are footing the bill for untrained, dangerous cops. They need to be in jail.

Cities need to start passing laws where these settlements come directly out of the police pension funds.

Everyone: start paying attention to your the going-ons of your city council. Familiarize yourself and communicate your district rep. If they seem like they're unresponsive to your needs, vote them out. Better yet, get together with local organizations that are aligned with various policy positions you may have (DSA, Green Party, whathaveyou), and help bring awareness to their endorsed candidates. Text/phone bank, engage with local journalists/reporters on social media to help get the candidate some write-ups, setup booths at protests - do what you gotta do.

Cops pensions should pay this. The pension managers would have to purchase liability insurance and pay mega premiums that only go down with good behavior over several years. College fraternities do this and so should "fraternal orders"

The proposed $12 million is at least more than usual, hopefully the family actually gets it. Not a replacement for actual justice either way.

How about arresting the cops who committed murder? or banning no knock raids? or doing litteraly anything to lower the chances of this happening again in the future and serving any kind of justice.

I believe this is called "hush money".

This also isn't justice, and it will not do ANYTHING to hold cops accountable for future murders of minorities.

It's important to keep in mind that criminal action and civil action are different things. Just because charges against the officers weren't included in the civil settlement doesn't mean there won't charges in the criminal case.

The DA should just go for the criminal charge even if it doesn't stick. The other 2 cops need to out from the police since this happened. Tax payers or in a sense the Protesters are footing the civil settlement when the cops suffer no significant consequences. 2 are reassigned and can still get pensions. Fuck all to that.

Good for the family to get a chance for a better life, but it might be weird to invoke her name at protests now knowing that Justice in terms of punishment for her shooters is impossible on not just "cops getting away with things" but also "the state decided that the legislative answer for this is settled via payment which her family agreed to."
