Yep. I still think about it fairly often. It's up there as the best game of the generation along with God of War.

The ending and story is really poor, the dungeons and bosses leave something to be desired and the combat is weird, but Zelda botw is one of the greatest open world games ever made and has the very best realized Zelda world, it deserves the praise

I recently went back to that game and beat every shrine and while it was annoying to do you may realize that this game was a masterpiece. Just a couple more tweak to the system like better dungeons and bosses and this game would be better.

I first played it only half a year ago, but as someone whose not the biggest fan of Zelda or Open world games, I think it's one of the best games I've every played.

I kept trying to climb walls in Horizon Zero Dawn and other games after BOTW. It's like when you step onto an escalator that is not running and your head feels weird because it should be moving. LOL That is how I felt when I couldn't climb anything.

I was extremely hyped about it, I bought the master sword edition without a switch and bought the Wii u version to play immediately. I was pretty let down. I played it for close to 200 hours, did all shrines and more than half the korok seeds. I even tried to replay it on switch once I got it but besides a few really fun areas like eventide island, I felt the game was a grind. I liked it enough to play it thoroughly, but it's zelda and my favorite franchise, but still bitter there were no true dungeons and the shrines were like mini copy paste teasers so something great that never materialized. Although I did love the epic hyrule castle music.

No game since maybe Minecraft made me feel like I was on my own adventure. I'm almost 30 and a game hasn't captured every moment of day like this game since I was child. And although while I was playing it I was able to identify obvious flaws and things I would like improved upon, I've never had a base concept for a game consume me like this one did. And to top it all off, it's an entry in what is probably my favorite franchise of all time. I just watched that matthewmatosis review and now my mind is racing with possibilities for the sequel. Maybe my favorite game ever!

The game is good to great but I stand by the fact that the weapon durability system is terrible and actively made the game worst even if they keep the system I hope they make it less awful in any subsequent games.

It's still not even close to the best zelda game though.

My feelings and love for it have only grown as I reflect back on it. I still think it has some areas it could have done better, especially things like having a few more traditional dungeons and a better visual variety when it came to the Shrines and Divine Beasts, but what it does it does so amazingly well and is nothing short of a magical experience that captured my attention like few games of the last few generations. One of the greatest games of all time and well deserving of its scores and reputation.

I can fully understand why the game got the praise it did.

First few hours for me were a slog, I really didn't understand how it was fun or appealing at all. The world felt barren,m the story almost non-existent, but then... after a few more hours I suddenly found myself immersed in the various systems, the intuitive and intelligent physics and interactions, the sheer sweeping adventurous scale of the environment.

It really is a remarkable game.

BUT

It just doesn't set my world alight... the lack of traditional dungeons and the world being just a little too empty made it feel like more of a chore to navigate and explore than a reward.

I got the master sword, I completed most of the legendary beast things, I did a bunch of cool side quests, and I felt like I had my fill.

I'd really love to see them take all the great stuff about BotW and go to a more wide linear format next time with more traditional dungeons.

And the REAL issue for me:

Weapon degradation system is manageable, but I just don't find that fun. I want to discover unique loot that stays with me for the entire game, not loot I feel like I shouldn't use because it will eventually disappear. It just meant most of the time I was hording cool stuff instead of actually using it.

The master sword kind of helped this, but the system just wasn't for me.

I'm still playing it. Has taken up around 350 hours or so of my life, and is one of the few pieces of media I am glad to have spent that much time with. It's a transcendent work, and is the preeminent example of what interactive media can be at its very best.

Whoever thought removing dungeons and a good soundtrack was a good idea needs to look in the mirror and think hard about their life

Had a ton of fun for 50 hours just focusing on shrines to build up for that epic boss rush in Hyrule Castle, before I went to do things I missed which made me realize how critically flawed the game was. Awful Guardians, the shitton of pointless recycled filler in the form of Korok Seeds, and little else to do made me slowly feel like it wasn't really a zelda game anymore, which made me sad and turn away from it despite the 50 hours of Joy I made for myself

Meh I can't be bothered extrapolating on this game for the hundredth time right now so I'll just say pick one review from the image in the OP and chances are high that I more or less agree with the sentiment of it.

The sense of exploration is phenomenal, but I feel everything else is middling-to-poor. I played it on both Wii U and Switch and lost interest both times 50-75% of the way through.

I don't like open world games and this didn't change my mind. I preferred Zelda games focused on dungeons and puzzles than exploration.
This is what i love about it, the game offers so many puzzles inside and outside the open world its insane, only thing dissapointing are the divine beasts, as a dungeon concept they are interesting but they need to be changed.

But i prefer the lovely open world and exploration overall.i didn't care about the dlc and its focus on big dungeons thats not what BotW was about for me

Although they're vastly different games, I'd honestly compare it to playing Morrowind for the first time in 2003.

Are there glaring, obvious flaws? Yes.
Is it still one of the greatest open world games of all time? Yes.

Loved it on my first playthrough but ended up trading it in. Had no replay value and didn't feel like grinding from start to finish again.

Loved it at first, but then I got a switch and played that version and for some reason I loved it even alot more. Masterpiece.

Next game better be like it, but with better story tho.

It's grossly overrated. I'm not saying it's a bad game but also nowhere near a 10/10

This game is out of control. I have to wonder if anyone is even going to manage to copy it. It makes me look at typical open world games and laugh.

I played it a few weeks after it came out and I didn't like anything about it other than the art style. I'll give it another chance some day.

Absolute Masterpiece on a level we haven't seen for a while by Nintendo (Mario Galaxy, Mario 64, OoT, Metroid Prime).

I'm still amazed how they made such a fantastic looking game on such weak hardware.

Still one of the best games ever made.

Would love to go back and do all the shrines, lol.

I loved it at first but my love slowly faded. Now I think it's my least favorite. I miss the dungeons and charm from the old games. I also feel like some games before it had better locations with a lot more personality. I hate every boss in this game, when Zelda games are used to having the most memorable bosses for me. The exploration is nice but you don't get rewarded from it (because the weapons break, which is also just so stupid) I don't like the "story" and characters (not even Zelda)
I need to replay it someday, to see how I feel about it. Just for reference, Wind Waker is my favorite because:
- first zelda game
- Has the most charm with its ennemies and characters
- I love exploring the sea and you get good rewards from it.
- I like every dungeon in that game, whereas with every other zelda there's some I dislike (cou terpoint here is there just aren't a lot in WW which is a damn shame)
- I like the story and characters
- it has a ton of side stuff to do

best game of the generation. when it released I thought it on par with witcher 3 but now 2 years later I have to say BOTW came out on top.

It's pretty good for a while, then the game broke down for me. There's too little of actual interest in the world, the enemy variety is abysmal for such a big world and the story is just bad. I expected more from such an over-hyped game. It certainly did nothing to propel itself ahead of other open world games, beyond the great traversal, which is only possible because you climb the most low res environment geometry seen since the N64.

First time I've been in awe of a game in many years. Any negatives I can come up with are so insignificant to the total package, it's irrelevant to me.

The epitome of open world gameplay to me, and the glider is just amazing.

I was blown away for the first 60 hours or so, did the beasts, then I just fell off HARD. Never even felt the drive to finish the game and beat Ganon. I just felt like it wasn't fun anymore.

Just recently went back and grabbed the dlc and fell in love all over again. The horse call really makes the world so much easier to explore and gives me that old school Hyrule Field feels. I wish it was there day 1. I wish weapons lasted about 30% longer and I wish there were more enemy types with better AI but yeah. It's a wonderful world to lose yourself in.
