James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has ruled out gender swap to the character of the suave British spy, saying the part will always be played a male.

...

"I always feel that Bond is a male character, that is just a fact. We have to make movies about women and women's stories but we have to create female characters and not just for a gimmick turn a male character into a woman," Broccoli told Good Morning Britain during Bond 25's launch event in Jamaica.

That theory, if a black female is to take the role?

Or maybe they literally just call them James Bond, subverting gender assumptions altogether?

This movie just has Bond's old number being assigned to a new agent. It does not have someone assuming the identity of James Bond. In the same way that Ralph Fiennes and Judi Dench both played M.

I feel like until now James Bond and 007 have been used interchangeably, but ruling out a female James Bond does not necessarily mean ruling out a female 007. It's literally happening with this movie if we assume this news is true. James Bond, the misogynistic philanderer, is probably too set in stone to really work with a female portrayal. 007 is just a number and can be applied to anyone.

Bond is retired. That is why his number is given up. Chances are at the end of the movie he gets the 007 number back or some thing.

So Bond sees a black woman as 007, promises to make MI6 great again, and takes his job back?

I think it's going to be the opposite, he will probably be forced to grudgingly work under her, develop a respect for her over the course of the movie before either dying or giving her the keys to the DB5 before disappearing forever.

I love it.

A racist at work literally cried about how "everything is being ruined".

I wanted to lick the salty tears of his face but I managed to keep my cool.

There may have been creative differences, as there are on pretty much any film, but Boyle himself stated that he left because he wanted to work with Hodge.

Hodge was working on the film though. And Hodge actually left the project after Boyle did.

That wasn't by choice. They were tied up in years of legal action so couldn't make any.

Not entirely, pre-production of what was to become Goldeneye (Property of a Lady?) continued throughout this time and it thankfully evolved away from the sci-fi elements of the original idea, which wouldn't have suited the mid 90s and Brosnan well, let alone Dalton.

The ultimate point being that Barbara Broccoli isn't afraid to evolve the franchise.

By not actually replacing James Bond, this just comes off as a poor attempt to please "both sides".

Well this will amount to nothing more than a spin off series or a female agent side kick. Or get completely ignored in the next iteration of the franchise after Craig. Cause no way in hell will they ever get rid of James Bond.

Black and female? I don't think Trumpers and man babies will be able to handle this lol.

Though I honestly don't see it. A black male lead is the direction I think they actually go in after this last Craig movie and when it's officially announced by the studio, etc.

I'm not sure if anyone is really going to be fooled by this. They didn't pay Craig 10 billion dollars just to return to the role and play second fiddle to some newcomer.

As a 007 fanatic that was named after Sean Connery as a kid, I can tell you that I am JACKED UP for this. I'm excited! So ready for hopefully, a new ERA. Let's do it.

I don't understand, why is a female 007 not a "replacement" for James Bond? Like unless her name was Jane Bond this doesn't count or something?
I think his point is 007 and James Bond are not the same. 007 is just a codename, while James Bond is this specific man.

At that point, it's necessary to think on what this series is: following 007 as MI6 agent or following James Bond as agent/hitman/rogue agent/etc.

I personally I'm 100% into the idea of just following the generic 007 agent, I don't care of sex, race or anything. I just want to see them save the world in entertaining movies.

As an example, back when people were discussing the possibility of Idris Elba playing James Bond, they wanted the actor to play James Bond the character, not just take on the code name while Daniel Craig keeps the "status quo" as the James Bond character. If the title character James Bond (or "Jane Bond", etc...) isn't actually being played by a Woman and/or Black actor, then in my opinion just handing out the code name because the main character "retired" is not giving people requesting this change what they asked for.

I don't care about the movies and will never see it.

Internet meltdowns, however, will provide a bit of entertainment.

You don't have to care about the movies. Care about the actor who is getting to star in this previously white-dominated series, and the positivity for the industry.

Why does it need to be ammunition to you?

I'm fine with the pick
They should also go all the way and make the plot about far right groups being astroturfed by the villain

I hope she's not a seat warmer and whatever happens in this movie has consequences. I'd love to see her take the mantle of 007.

A female 007 is long overdue. In fact, have we seen any female 00s?

I'm sorry, but the source for this article is The Daily Mail, isn't it? It says it in the first paragraph. Does The Guardian have new sources I'm missing here?

I actually think that could be a great compromise, keep Bond as the white, misogynist he has always been while using the codename 007 for other characters.

Corporations don't do anything because it is the right thing to do but for the spectacle of it.

I'm not gonna pretend otherwise.

Daily Mail is just click bait. The producers have come out and said they're wrong.

No they haven't. There are some old quotes from Barbara regarding casting a woman as James Bond, not anything that precludes a female character from being assigned the 007 number. Given the talk about Waller-Bridge's involvement in the script it makes a fair amount of sense to open the next movie with a crusty Bond being dragged into a woke new world where a young black woman has his old number.

I would be really surprised if she's alive by the halfway point of the movie, with Bond having to take up the 007 designation again

All the outrage from the racists who don't bother reading the article, and are just lashing out at the headline is hilarious. No, it doesn't mean they're turning James Bond into a black woman. It just means she's taking the 007 title while he's retired. I bet she's going to kick all kinds of ass, and this gives me hope that they might actually go with Idris as the next Bond.

If the studio has even a 1% chance of making a spinoff movie with the new female supporting character (that's what she is), they would have cast a much more famous female actress anyway.

Am I wrong in understanding that this is not the first time 007 has been a woman? I was reading about the original Casino Royale, and it seems like there were multiple 007's in that movie as part of the plot; one or more of them being women. This headline seems to be blowing up in the wake of the Ariel/Little Mermaid reveal and people looking for the next thing to be outraged over.

Casino Royale (1967) is a comedy, a silly one at that, and is not considered to be part of the franchise really.

Was about to get real pissed, but then I looked her up and she IS British. She did a pretty convincing American accent in Captain Marvel.

Had no idea it was a comedy! I actually found the multiple 007 information from the 00-Agent Wikipedia listings page, and then briefly skimmed over the plot.

This headline still feels very disingenuous, as people are looking at this and thinking it's Daniel Craig's replacement rather than a supporting character in what is likely to be a very similar-feeling Bond film. I agree with what the producer has come out with in that "James Bond" is what he is, but it'd be interesting to see them flesh out the universe some more and if a female-led story could succeed.
