My girlfriend and I tried our hands at a tabletop game for the first time over the weekend. Picked up mansion of madness second edition at a hobby/comics shop. We turned a 2 hour game into a solid 3 hours but we had a blast figuring it out! I believe we have both found a new hobby. Our second run was far smoother and we are definitely getting more familiar with the mechanics.

I have a few questions. This game has a really handy companion app and seems to be enjoyable for two people. Does anyone have any recommendations for similar games? We want to get used to the systems and the general flow before we try playing with friends and such. Horror, steampunk, post-apocalyptic and fantasy are the themes we are probably most interested in. Thanks for any input everyone!
Hey, welcome! I just started playing tabletop stuff last year and play mostly with my girlfriend. After we had played Mansions of Madness together, we decided to check out the Arkham Horror Card Game which, by title, may sound like a spin off or adjunct to the other Arkham games, but that's definitely not the case. It's THE game to play if you enjoy the spooky, thematic aspects of Mansions. You're building a character out of a set of cards and testing your deck against a campaign comprised of multiple scenarios. While Mansions has one-shot stories, Arkham has an ongoing narrative that responds to your choices, and scenario outcomes. For instance: killing a mobster in the casino in scenario 1 might make them come back for revenge in scenario 4. Anyway, it's become the game for us, and I think you guys would really enjoy going through it together! Try the Core Box and see if it's for you.

An addendum: I saw Shagrath responded and I wanted to add on, too. Arkham is definitely a little more complex than Mansions. The result is that the gameplay is a lot more rewarding. If you decide to check it out, you can always ask questions and clarify stuff - the above poster really helped me get into it back in March.

For something with a companion app, you can check out Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle Earth, Star Wars: Imperial Assault, or Descent: Journeys in the Dark. These are all made by Fantasy Flight (who made Mansions of Madness) and they all have apps that allow you team up to play in a campaign style game with the app acting as the game's AI similar to Mansions of Madness. If IP doesn't matter to you, you'd probably get the best bang out of your buck with Journeys in Middle Earth as the game was explicitly made with the app in mind (the app was added onto the other two after release).

However, they're all solid games, so it's really dependent on which flavor you like the best. Check out some reviews on YouTube to see which would float your boats.

Anyone got any ideas how to spot a dodgy copy of a game.

I'm having a clear out and found a sealed copy of Carcassonne Winter Edition in the cupboard, I've heard there were a few dodgy repos knocking around and before I attempt to sell it I wanted to make sure it was legit.

Seems hard to tell unless people have posted online with specific things that are defective/weird with the counterfeit. Like I had a copy of Patchwork I'm pretty sure was counterfeit (from Amazon), and the only noticeable thing was that the pieces didn't really fit together easily.

I guess without opening, you could try seeing if anything on the cover or back seems blurry. Or maybe the quality of the shrink wrap?

Someone should start a "Board Game Counterfeit Detective" YouTube channel, lol

Just got an email on my Jaws of the Lion preorder from Dice & Decks here in the UK. Basically says that they have only received half their shipment and can only fulfil 110 orders. Sounds like partial shipments across many stores here.

Sadly I was a bit last minute with the order so looks like I will have to wait for a couple more weeks.

Played a couple of Doctor Strange games in Marvel Champions. From everything I read I was expecting him to be overpowered and I can confirm he indeed seems super strong. The invocation deck is just beastly, even with the starter card list he can take down villains in single rounds and his card draw seems pretty nuts.

I love Dr. Strange. I'm playing him with a Leadership aspect and it's been a ton of fun.

Avalon hill has a Heroquest countdown page up now. I guess they are maybe working with Restoration Games? We'll know more on the 22nd.

https://heroquest.avalonhill.com/en-us

Ya, it will be interesting to see. Heroquest was a lot of fun as a kid but it would need some serious updating design wise and the dungeon crawl is a very crowded market now. Also, someone on BGG noticed the ESRB logo, which I completely missed. So, it could be a companion game or app too.

Oh, interesting. I didn't notice that either. The name alone will carry it pretty far, and I'm fairly likely to e tit myself, but hopefully they can modernize it pretty well so it doesn't stay as generic as it currently is.

That would be Warhammer Quest, which is an extremely awesome update to Heroquest. I agree that the plain old Heroquest will probably knock some rose tinted glasses off a few faces when they go back and play it today!

I've enjoyed every Restoration Games product they've put out so far. Got dark tower backed on KS and and waiting for their keys to the kingdom release.

Anyone want to buy my deluxe version of Raccoon Tycoon? It's still in shrink. I also have metal coins to go with it.

The long wait on the kickstarter basically had reverse hype for me. I honestly just have no desire to play it and the box is just such a massive shelf hog.

Wish it was easier to sell board games. Seems like you only have luck on Reddit if it is super rare.

I've all but given up on selling them. Used to make some decent discretionary cash flipping games. These days I usually bring them to local stores swap and shop days if I really want to get it gone.
Pissed I passed on a sleeved and punched Machina Arcana for 15 bucks last time they did one. Silver lining is they have new stuff on KS soon but I doubt I'll ever see it that cheap again.

We've got a good (~1.5k people) group here in Austin on FB that I've bought + sold a bunch on, but there's a good number of games that just won't move through that channel. I'm trying to dramatically downsize my 'collection' for reasons, I've got a pile of low interest, but good quality, games that I can't shift....

I have the 2nd KS of MA, they have new stuff? is it an expansion? I still need to learn to play it.

Machina Arcana has a new expansion on Kickstarter September 22. There may be other new content in addition to a bunch of previously available materials.

Returning backers (not sure for 1st or 2nd edition) are supposed to be eligible to get a new core box as well I recall seeing on social media.

Of course the 22nd is going to be a busy day with 7th Citadel and Dinosaur World both launching their Kickstarters that day as well.

I might just wait till Origins next year (if they can manage a comeback) and participate in a used game flea market to get rid of some games and thin out the collection.

I have at least two local used game sales near me but they didn't happen because the pandemic so I didn't get to do my purge. I'm mostly just trying to get rid of stuff before more KS come in!

I've been selling a lot of games to Noble knight games. They won't give you the top price, but they also don't pick and choose from what your offering. I've sold a bit through BGG market but for games that are unlikely to find a buyer they are a nice alternative.

I've also sold a fair bit to Noble Knight Games...I do have an advantage as I'm within reasonable driving distance of their location, so I don't need to ship to them (I work in Madison, so I'm only 15-20 minutes away to drive to the other side of Madison where their store is).

Just ordered Death may die for 70€. Depending on what the Ps5 will cost/when it releass, I want to order Citadel Contrast colors. Any idea of what I need for a good starting set? Got 10 different colors, 3 differently sized brushes and one prime spray. Is there anything else that I need or is this already to much?

I almost sold games to them but boy did they give me bottom dollar on Rising Sun w/Daimyo box. $115 for that, Battle of Five Armies, City of Kings and three other games. I laughed hard.

I will write you all a guide to selling and trading on BGG, but you have to promise you're going to get over this phobia of shipping, unless you live somewhere with no post office for miles.

I'd honestly be interested in that, i'm currently selling a bunch of games on Ebay because I couldn't be bothered to look into selling on BGG. I'm in the UK though so not sure what the market would be like on BGG.

My SO went to the post office on Monday to buy postcard stamps and they said they were going to lunch. That's fine, it was 1p. She goes back at 4p (they close at 5p) and they were already closed. She returns Tuesday or Wednesday and sees people ahead of her just leaving from the line. Gets to the front and they said they can't sell her the stamps because the person who does it isn't working today and doesn't know when they will be back. Goes back Friday and finally buys regular stamps because there still was no one there.

There are a lot of issues with the post office these days and I live in a popular city. It is no longer as easy to use them these days.

How is your day-to-day mail delivery going? There's definitely post offices that are worse than others.

My mom sent my SO a birthday card and she said it took along time to arrive but I honestly don't know how quantify how it is going in any other way. This post office has moved three times over the course of about 7 years.

My wife just leaves things (packages) in the mailbox and the mailman picks them up? We print labels/postage off our computer.

That works but we are moving so the precious boxes and lack of printer is an issue. I don't have many friends with a printer as well.

Ahhh, it probably helps my work has a lot of boxes available to use (just random delivery boxes that would otherwise get tossed). Our local library also lets us print off of it (provided it's not over X# of pages, I forget how many). We used that in a pinch for some other stuff when our printer was out of ink.

Yikes, yeah my first time I wanted to get an estimate with 7th continent in the mix which I am still divided on, but they only offered like $180 roughly in the estimate and that was 7th Continent and sleeved plus like Eldritch Horror with expansions and a few others. I mostly use them for games that I would donate just to get rid of them than spend the time finding a buyer.

Anything you actually want value from you pretty much have to put in the time and effort to find a buyer. It isn't easy specially because they get scared off when you tell them how much it is to ship. Had a potential buyer for Deep Madness with all the expansions, gave them an estimate to ship and never heard from him again. I know I could eat part of the shipping cost just to get it out the door but these are the ones I am usually divided on getting rid of, and I know it won't be easy to get them back. For shipping I always use UPS or fedex whoever is cheaper, but I am fortunate to live very close to a drop off area for them.

Some quick tips about boxes:

I used to worry about buying boxes to ship stuff in. Sure, USPS's flat rate boxes are free, and fit many board games just fine. But sometimes they don't, or sometimes you've sold a bunch of games to one person, in which case those flat rate fees can add up.

I save all the board game shipment boxes I get (and the very valuable bubble wrap and air packets). Naturally, they're a good size for sending games. Save this stuff! I know you're ordering games online, and all that packaging material can be repurposed for selling.

I also save some boxes that come in the mail. Certain Amazon boxes are a great size. I'm also lucky to live in an apartment building with a relatively clean trash room and an active online shopping habit, lol. People regularly drop off their recycling downstairs and I go down there once in a while to salvage some good boxes, which has worked out pretty well.

In some cases I've had to resort to buying bought some of those smaller moving boxes (like 14"x14") and cut them down to the required size. Cutting down an oversized box is pretty easy, and can work in a pinch if you don't find the perfect box for your sale.

Also, please put proper padding in your shipments, it's really important (and why the stuff they send from OLGSes is so valuable)! One of the last games I bought from someone, he just dropped it into a shoe box with nothing else, and it arrived very damaged.

The problem is the cost of shipping heavy and odd shape games. It kills the deal for both seller and buyer most of the time. Not always now, if you sell a high ticket item people will be happy to pay. But if you have a $50 game and you want 20, sometimes those are 20 just to ship them. Most people would rather spend the 50 to get it new than 40 to get it used

Is there a good option to ship many (heavy) games at once? Anyone know?

Sell stuff in a big bundle to get the most value for shipping but the more there are the more it costs. It also depends on how far they go. I sold time stories and all expansions and it was only $30 (that included having ups store box them and bubble wrap them too) but it only went 1 or 2 states away

Cost me around $50 to ship Edge of Darkness (this box weighed about 20lbs if I recall) from Texas to Oregon (it was also rather large). It can get expensive, but I've heard people on BGG swear by Pirateship but I've never used them so I can't vouch.

What do you get for some typical non rare games? Do they tell you a box size to use? Do they pay shipping?

Can you give an example?

Most 50 dollar games come in that standard ~12"x12" square box, and you definitely can ship that for less than $20.

The last time I purged a bunch of games, in May, I was shipping stuff for $10. This meant using my own boxes like I described above, but IIRC my shipping fee was $12 (with an offer to combine shipping) and people paid it.
