User Banned (1 Month): Continuous trolling and bad faith argumentation on a serious topic over the course of this thread. Recently returned from a ban for trolling.
Blizzard openly supports Chinese oppression by legitimizing their government and overlooking the concentration camps and other numerous abuses China is committing.

Given that some websites, people and games are banned from being discussed here—how on earth is Blizzard fandom allowed?

This corporation Is a participant in the squelching of free speech and human rights. They're actually doing the things we all swear to detest and that this forum opposes.

I know it is radical to suggest banning fandom over a major player in games, but this forum is complicit and openly hypocritical in our continued embrace of blizzard but banning of others.

What say you era?

Probably the same reason we still talk about Riot Games, despite the fact that they'd 100% do the exact same thing had Blizzard not taken the PR hit first.

The Chinese government is, at the moment, legitimate. Should companies not obey national law because the government is disliked by parts of its fandom?

If you start banning companies because they do business in China we're gonna run out of things to talk about real quick.

If I recall, Catherine: Full Body discussion wasn't banned because the mods mentioned that it'd be the same as pretending that it didn't exist with regards to its blatant bigotry. I'd imagine that a similar reason rings true for Blizzard, but that's just my guess.

pretty sure the reason is because its a slippery slope that would eventually have people asking "what level of human rights violations are ok/not ok" because corporations gonna corporate and there would be none we would be able to talk about

You can still like and discuss problematic things. In fact it's better to actively discuss problems and how they could be resolved, and whether or not you think it's worthwhile to continue financial support for a company you have a lot of disagreements with.

Blizzard has a long and storied history, but their recent (and admittedly atrocious) actions don't detract from their past quality works which many people still enjoy.

Shutting down all discussion on these kinds of issues is probably an overreaction.

The same reason every single company active in China is allowed. It's a terrible thing, but this really wouldn't be a game's forum if we banned discussion on every single problematic company.

imagine being this naïve. not everyone has the luxury of firing themselves because of their beliefs.
My approach is the total opposite of naive. My suggestion fully recognizes the gravity of what one cog in a machine can help produce and that's precisely why it's fair to question them.

The US government runs concentration camps too and support the Israeli oppression of Palestinians.

And so forth...

(This is a bait thread)

Blizzard the company does it. If you work there, you support it whether you want to or not through your labor.
Mmm...you're one of those people who goes through the Chick Fil A drive thru for a water cup just to berate the drive thru person for the company's beliefs, aren't you

Is it problematic to vocalize support for people that run concentration camps or is it simply a problem? They didn't put out a controversial opinion, they took action

Banning people from talking about Blizzard seems like the perfect way to bury any of their wrong doings from surfacing.

Hey lactatingduck , just a quick question :

Super Smash Bros Ultimate added some characters from some "problematic" games, via the Fighters Pass. Don't you think that, if we follow what you're saying, we should also ban any Super Smash Bros Ultimate / Nintendo discussion ?

(Hero / Sugiyama, Joker and the treatment of the LGBTs in their games...)

Yeah, making that sort of extrapolation doesn't hold up very well as soon as you have a very basic understanding about the global economy works.

Conflating that with them outright "oppressing human rights" is losing a considerable amount of nuance and stages of causality too. Not that what Blizzard did isn't wrong, but treating it as an all-or-nothing thing makes the whole conversation moot very quickly.

Why do you think it's stupid?

Because I think capitalism in general is an unethical and oppressive system, certain Blizzard higher ups may be guilty of supporting China, but they're definitely not the only unethical company out there. If we went and made a list of every company that has shit politics, this forum wouldn't exist. Might as well knock out any company that does business or supports the US while we're at it, because we definitely don't have an ethical government either.

Because they make video games and this is a video game forum.

As a company they might have very questionable political stances, but they don't reflect every employee who works there, nor the players that enjoy their worlds.

But the profit they derive from players and the value they derive from worker labor is used for oppressing and subverting human rights.
