yeah it still ain't great, but the recent big interface update with 2.8 makes me think they're (hopefully) trying to address this long-standing issue. Blender's interface is really the biggest hang-up for veterans and beginners alike
Yeah, I mean I'm not trying to crap on it because it's a fantastic program especially for being free it's just I wish they could make something's less complicated when they should be easier. I've dabbled in Blender off and on though and it's super powerful I always love seeing what they continue to put out.

Bumping the thread for help:

I started using Blender starting today purely for the purposes of video editing. I have been through a few tutorials but at this very moment I still have not been able to find a way to select portions of a clip to copy to a new layer. Does anyone know how I can do it because right now it's a protracted process involving cutting, pasting and moving?

Blender has really come a long way. A long time ago I took a class in Maya (with some previous dabbling in 3ds max) and a couple years back when I tried Blender it felt like hitting my head against a brick wall to get anything done. Hit the eject button almost instantly.
Recently I tried Blender again and it was much easier for me to get where I was going. It's still a bit more abstruse about certain things but much more viable now overall. I successfully completed a model in it and didn't hate my life! There's still plenty of room for improvement but it's a great product for the price of free.

I can't believe this software is free. No catch or anything. Just free and open source goodness with so many wonderful features that rival all of the expensive 3d packages. Can't wait to see where it goes from here.

Nice, upgraded today. I just completed a mentorship with Jama Jurabaev so I have been neck deep in Blender the last month after never using it before.

Figured I'd ask here - I'm more on the programming/level design side of the house but I do currently use Maya for a lot of greyboxing. How difficult would it be to pick up Blender?

Thanks for the link! Which course did you take? How was it?
I took the Beginner level class and I greatly enjoyed it. It's not specifically about Blender (there's a lot of content on cinematography) but that is the primary application used. I went from 0 Blender knowledge to making this:

Not what I would call a great image or anything, but I'm really happy to learn that much in a month.

By greyboxing you just mean placing generic shapes around and rendering it for use as a base? It would be fairly easy to pick up, though I did have to change the viewport controls to emulate Maya since they were irritating to me. You might have to block out a day to learn where all the UI stuff is though.

Oh damn, you studied your butt off! That is so impressive and it looks like you learned multiple skill sets to achieve it. Congrats, dude

I moved back from maya some months ago. There's an "industry-compatible" keybinding that makes coming from autodesk pretty simple. People have complaints about the UI, but it's quick to pick up

I really enjoy using blender in my free time, I've only posted a few little things I've done but:

Are there any courses people would recommend for a deeper understanding? I've done a few and some YouTube tutorials, I want to do more to better improve my skills too.

Paid/Unpaid - whatever. I'd love to hear any suggestions. I'm really into hard surface modelling currently and would like to get better at that too but anything to do with lighting and rendering too.

Yeah. Modeling for me is basically rough outlining rather than making the final models.

Ok, cool. I figure learning both is a good skill to have, I'll spend some time this summer figuring it out.

Finished a little something I've been working on in Blender recently. Excited to start something new in 2.90 soon.

I need to sit down and try to learn this thing. It's super daunting when I'm so used to 3ds max and I get frustrated when I can't figure out simple stuff but I need to take the time and just do it.

I started learning and using 3DS Max in 2003 back before Autodesk bought it (I was 11). I slowly learned it for Unreal maps, Halo CE maps and Source Engine maps. In 2019 I slowly transitioned to Blender and have never looked back. Totally worth your time to do so, even using 3DS Max for 16 years like I did before moving over... it did feel like learning to walk again at first but totally worth it.

Cool, I'll work on it then. Hearing words of encouragement from another Max refugee helps lol.

any former Cinema 4D users here switch to Blender? it'd be great to get your take on switching over. been on C4D for 5+ years but with the economy in shambles i'm interested in Blender to save me some money.

Wow awesome work guys. Wish I could get into stuff like this but I'm too stupid to learn lol

I know of a few videos, but does anyone have any good book suggestions? I don't always like to pause and rewind the videos a lot

Should I be using Blender 2.9 or 2.83?
I'm just gonna do the donut tutorial. Had 2.79a installed previously

Also random question, do people dislike GIMP? I've used GIMP for years and enjoyed it.

People hate GIMP, but I think that - for most people - it's for the same reason they hate Blender (i.e that's it's different from what they're used to.) Obviously, there are some features the power Photoshop users use that GIMP doesn't, but I'm talking for general users.

Personally, I've used GIMP since before it had an official Windows release and I love that I've had a full featured graphics program for free guilt-free.

2.90 but the tutorial is for 2.8 so their could be minor differences. Currently I'm at Level 1 part 3:

My firm(architecture) transitioned to using Blender to do all of our in-house rendering studies last year after 2.80 came out despite having access to 3ds max through our autodesk package, and it's been great. It even replaced some of the rendering works we usually contract out to professional rendering companies. I recently got upgraded to a workstation with RTX3080, real-time preview with optix denoise is almost magical. I'm speaking as someone who hated Blender UI with a passion pre-2.80.

It's always struck me as strange that the FTC was not involved more in Autodesk buying up so much of its competition. It'll be an interesting case study down the line if only a non-profit, open source software structure such as Blender was able to make progress in the market and re-introduce competition.

I think I may have posted this before, but yeah, I tried so hard to learn blender pre-2.80, and it did not get it until 2.80. The UI change, combined with the more fun and short tutorials ("Lazy tutorial"/Cgmatter style) is how I was able to become a regular user.

3DWorld does reach my country, but I have not set foot in a magazine store since the initial lockdown. Guess it's time to make a visit.
