Oh my

Well I think I'll refund until this is addressed. All about supporting this game and nightdive in general but I can't get on board with the characters popping out of the backgrounds like that. I'll stick with my GOG edition for now - wondering if I can run it on Deck 🤔

Yikes :(

It's not clear to us why, given the IARC process we don't actually get feedback. We think it's because the game has mention of underage exploitation.

Yeah, I can see that being considered sexualisation of minors. A little-known fact about the R18+ rating for video games is that its introduction didn't come with a revamp of the actual classification guidelines, so everything is still weighted against guidelines that were codified with MA15+ in mind.

Edit: I think you'd come out with an R18+ rating on appeal due to just how low-level the references are (most recently, Disco Elysium's console release was later slapped with an R18+ rating after initially being refused classification due to "drug misuse"), but I completely understand not wanting to spend money on what is ultimately a 50/50 shot at best, especially considering the game's primary audience is on PC.

Would you be able to give an example (i.e a screenshot or descriptive location, or both)?

Here's a particular comparison, taken from the Rock Paper Shotgun piece about the differences in the Enhanced Edition:

And here's an article going through some issues/bugs the player experienced:

alternativemagazineonline.co.uk

GAME NEWS – Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition Is Out Now… and It’s In Desperate Need of a Patch

By Marty Mulrooney The best part about downloading Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition so far has been seeing it on the home screen of my PlayStation 5. It’s the classic PC point-and-click adventure gam…

For example:

On the very first screen, the player is unable to click anywhere on the ground to move protagonist Ray McCoy. You can click hotspots, but the ground is apparently off-limits (I loaded up the original game to check, and this definitely shouldn't be happening).

And:

On a slightly more positive note, one of the best things about the Enhanced Edition is the introduction of subtitles. This is a great addition! However, should they be playing over the opening cutscene when it is literally a text crawl?

Damn, I'm hopeful they can patch a lot of these visual issues especially the blurring of backgrounds. So much detail lost in certain spots :/

I'm hopeful it'll get the treatment it deserves after the RPS article and the feedback from others.

Aware is an understatement. Before anyone asks, no I won't talk about what happened, but we have identified at least a couple of things that went wrong in the launch process that need changing for future projects. Vague, I know, but I don't want to give the impression of blaming any one particular person or group as I don't think it's any one person's fault.

Appreciate the candour. Hopefully some things can be fixed on this one.

Since I trust NightDive to do the right thing, and because of your honest and objective response to the issue, I just bought it on XBox while waiting for a patch to address this stuff. Congrats

It's on PS5 in Australia but not Xbox yet. I might hold off and grab the Xbox version and wait for a latch. Nightdive usually add a ton to games post release so I'm fine waiting.

What is the controller interface? Is it just dragging a cursor around? Are there any QOL controller-specifuc things added?

thanks for your thoughtful and measured response to the situation. things happen and your studio has proven itself before so I feel confident about how this release will turn out ultimately. in any case, you clearly care and that's what matters most.

Is anyone aware of performance issues with the PC release? Mine is hitching all over the place and the game just stops for a solid second or two before it allows me to make inputs again.

How do you buy this on a series X? The game doesn't show up at all when searching blade runner.

What country? The game is not available on consoles in Australia and New Zealand due to the previously mentioned classification issue with ACB.

Can't say that's come up even in QA. Sounds like an FMV bottleneck. What's your system specs, and what kind of hard-drive are you using?

USA, I specifically searched bladerunner while searching Y today and it didn't show the game at all.

2080 Ti, i9-9900k 3.6 mhz, 32 gb ram and a nice slow HDD. Have you guys tested the game on regular HDD, because needing this on an SSD is not something I would have ever guessed is needed to play an FMV; like I accept an up-front cost for hitting the disk, but once its in memory can't it just stay looping?.

I don't think the hard-drive is related, given this hasn't come up on Xbox One which has like no cache at all, but I want to add that to the report just in case.

Available on steam woohoo. Still can't find it on the AU PSN store though

Edit - What's with the mostly negative reviews on steam? People saying this versions is not good. What's the go?

A combination of missing language support versus the original GOG release (which ND has since confirmed will be corrected ASAP), issues with audio files cutting out, the upscaled environments actually sporting less detail than their original counterparts, some minor graphical oversights (e.g. see Zor's comparison post further up the page), and the GOG version including the original game as an alternative option but the Steam version lacking it.

It's definitely an unfortunate first impression (especially considering the game launched alongside the beginning of Steam's Summer Sale), but I've all faith in Night Dive that it'll do its best to address the grievances.

Having weird issues on Steam Deck too, only noticed during the shooting gallery where shots weren't being registered for a couple of seconds at seemingly random times. Will just try it on my PC to see if it is only occurring on Steam Deck.

EDIT: Same issue on PC and it seems some targets you just cant shoot no matter how many times you click on them even if the cursor turns red.

I'm assuming it doesn't really matter what you get this on, considering how old it is?

Any loading time differences or anything? Haven't yet decided on whether to get this on Xbox or PS, but can't imagine there are any differences nor that it matters.

Can NightDive give for free the original game to Steam users as well like GOG does?
Because that version also supports restored content, which is missing on Steam.

What's the deal with the personality type you choose before starting? I chose user defined so do I switch between attitudes with a button or is it based on dialogue choices?

This game has a dialogue tree of sorts, but unlike most games, there is no reason to exhaust every option at any given time. By choosing one of the personality types, you hide the dialogue tree and let the game choose what you say based on your chosen personality instead. This can enhance replayability a lot.

This kind of system works well for Blade Runner since this is a game that is less about puzzles and picking specific dialogue, and more about experiencing each individual scene of the story and seeing where it takes you. It's up to you whether or not you want to embrace the personality system, but it's there if you want it.

I won't support this:

I've responded to them. Basically it seems the ScummVM folks gave us an incomplete credits list, but we can only find the three names we already included. We would never knowingly not include someone, there's nothing to be gained from that.
Their credits list for subtitles:
CREDITS:
--------
English subtitles arranged by Thanasis "praetorian" Antoniou
French subtitles arranged by Kwama57
Spanish subtitles arranged by Geek Ob and Víctor González Fraile (aka IlDucci)

And thus our credits:

I've asked them to drop us a line so we can resolve this and if there's anyone else missing.

I toyed around with the game on my Steam Deck last night. It seems to work pretty well, but I set up a custom control scheme with the trackpad for mouse movement and the A button as left mouse. Gotta make a few more adjustments but this way feels good to me. The blurry backgrounds are less offensive on the smaller screen, but truth be told I like the old, grainier look better. I wish this remaster would give the option to simply use the original unfiltered and more detailed art.

And why replacing the OG game? Thats unacceptable, specially considering the state you have launched the remaster guys. You need to sort out this situation

Yeah an option to restore the original unfiltered look of the game and an option to remove the artwork on the sides (black bars) for dat Switch OLED screen would be very welcome!

Just bought the game on Switch to support this project, but am going to wait for a few patches until I dive in. Hoping Night Dive keeps their word and will keep fixing the issues.

We are just the contractors, and have no publishing control over the original version so it's not something we have any part in. I'll bring it up either way and see if I can get that to the license holders.

Edit: I've been informed this is actually misinformation, the original has not been removed from purchase at all. GOG packed both into one title, so you get both if you buy it and for the same price. Meanwhile Steam never had the original version at all.

The internet shitstorm based on misinformation is in full force, it seems. 😿 Oh well any PR is good PR for this game, I hope.

Any chance you can kick up the chain the possibility of the original game being added to the Steam version of the EE?

I will absolutely try. It's not something we are allowed to do ourselves from the best of my understanding, but it's worth asking about. Though I'm stuck thinking there might be a reason why it was only on GOG before...

I can only assume there was a reason the original was never on steam - there's quite a few games like that where GOG sorts something out that steam doesn't (it's actually one of the reasons GOG exists)

Agree it would be great to see but it's probably like asking to get the GOG version of MGS2 listed on steam, especially given Edward's response a few replies earlier

Its a shame seeing all these drive by posts dunking on the game. This was obviously a huge undertaking both on a technical and legal level and Nightdive should absolutely be applauded for their efforts, especially at this launch price. For a small team like Nightdive and all their other projects going on this was no small feat, so its okay if its not perfect at launch.

We have a developer in here sharing information and helping out responding to your questions, which is a rare feat on its own, so we should treat them with respect and applaud them for their candidness.

Yeah, my understanding is that CDPR agrees to handle the nitty-gritty of getting an on old game to run on modern systems in exchange for a (relatively) short period of exclusivity. E.g. System Shock 2 was exclusive to GOG for three months.

In the case of Blade Runner, though, I assume Alcon figured there was no point in releasing the original game on Steam since the EE was in the works. That or whoever oversaw the release of the game on GOG simply wasn't aware of Steam (which wouldn't be all that dissimilar to that time Amazon Tony hacked through a web of bureaucratic nonsense and actually found someone within the Rhode Island state government who knew enough about games to authorise a discount on Steam keys for Kingdoms of Amalur, only for said person to go quiet because they realised they could just discount the game on Steam itself).
