He also gave one of Trump's sycophants a platform to continue denying the election results and said that the blue wave was killed by the "woke" movement. His bullshit has been old for a while but I feel like he's not even trying to hide the fact that he's a closet bigot at this point.

Bill Maher is and always has been a piece of shit. He thinks he's above it all and has a total unwillingness to empathize with people who are legitimately suffering, instead opting to laugh at them from his comfy studio while he rakes in the big bucks. He fucking sucks.

I agree with him to a certain degree. The push for purity tests and rise of cancel culture can cause an over reaction from the "blue side" that just does not vibe well with conservative America. Some of the examples he gave were bad but overall it's a reasonable assessment and concern for future voting trends if you're a democrat.

I don't hate this dude as much as everyone here but I'm no huge fan of his. My mother however is like yours. She is a democrat but a diehard Bill Maher fan.

I think Bill Maher taps into the Boomer left audience is my guess going by all the people who's parents are a fan of his.

The Mitchell Miller / Brett Kavanaugh comparison was a doozy. And yeah, I think it's fair game to call an 18 year old out for this:

In 2016, Miller and a classmate were found delinquent in an Ohio juvenile court on charges of assault and a violation of the Ohio Safe Schools Act.[SUP][8][/SUP] The pair were accused of forcing a developmentally disabled African American classmate, Isaiah Meyer-Crothers, to eat a piece of candy that they had wiped along the inside of a urinal. Surveillance video also captured them kicking and punching Meyer-Crothers.[SUP][9][/SUP]

On top of calling him racial slurs.

Jesus christ, dude.

Maybe it's because he's politically incorrect but somewhat left leaning? I get that, but he's just a major narcissist with no self-awareness. He's absolutely insufferable.

America
Bill Maher is right. We should abandon minorities and chase that republican moderate voter.

Because the middle is a great place to be.

He's kind of right, but for the wrong reasons. Identity politics aren't yielding results in elections. He conflated that with socialist/leftist rhetoric, which is wrong, because leftists are also mostly in agreement that we should be focusing more on class and inequality rather than banging on about racial issues 24/7. We shouldn't be chasing republican voters, but we should be trying to tap into things that will actually make working american's lives better rather than trying to shame them into voting blue. That's how you turn up new votes.

This is what kills his point for most on this site. The bad examples he gave here were like...abysmally, incredibly, shockingly bad.

I agree with you, and I think the most recent election results are a lot more complex than "50% of the country is a nazi". And I think for some, the sense of pandering is a big is part of that.

On the other hand, Bill Maher is doing a shit job of carrying water for that idea when he complains about the Kavanaugh hearings (which likelywon D seats in the House as a result, contrary to what he says here) and showing a montage that implicitly defends people like Woody Allen.

Why does anyone give this guy any time? He's always got bad takes. I don't actually recall many democratic candidates saying defund the police or appearing too woke.
Republicans try smearing Democrats like that's their manifesto policies and nobody dares questions it so it sticks.
Bill Maher reminds me of the liberal dog in family guy.

You're all trippin' on Maher. He's literally one of a kind in the media where everyone is hyper left or right. He IS absolutely 100% without a doubt a democrat but he gives democrats shit just as much the GOP and that's a good thing.

When you say purity tests, what do you mean? The only "purity" people seem to be asking for is like not being a racist or bigot, it's actually not a hard bar to clear.

I think that my biggest problem is taking bad examples of grossly over-zealous liberals and extrapolating that out as far as he did with the examples he did, because that is a serious problem.
There's room for talking about this, but in Maher's world, gradients don't exist, so he is quite literally the worst person to do so. It requires a bit more nuance and delicacy that simply are not in his repertoire.

More to the point, if they can't pass that basic test, why do we even want them in the first place? We presumably want the Democratic Party to succeed because they provide something, not just because of brand loyalty.

There is no 'reasonable assessment' when you are using numerous sexual abusers and serial sexual harassers as examples of how the left is "going to far".

Voting Democrat and being a racist, sexist piece of shit are not mutual exclusive.

He does play to the piece of shit moderate liberal crowd. So he is 100% without a doubt a democrat.

I often get the sense that there's a whole cottage industry of giving white people the ability to be as openly racist as the "real racists" without having the consequence of doing it. If you look at South Park, The Office, Always Sunny, so on and so forth, there's just an endless supply of being preached to about bigotry via main characters being bigoted towards minority groups that they aren't a part of.

Bill Maher is just someone else who benefits from that and he presumably is aware of it.

Ah yes, Maher giving Democrats shit over *checks notes*...criticizing child abusers, rapists, and sexual harassers. Truly the voice of reason we need.

He didn't just vote democrat, jesus christ. Dude donates a million bucks to the democrats is 2016 to defeat Trump. He literally has been a champion of just about every major liberal cause out there for fucking YEARS, railing against the GOP and Trump and literally helping to sway SOME VOTERS and all of a sudden none of that is good enough.

Ya'll are cray cray. Who is perfect in your eyes? Maddow? Don Lemon? Chris Cuomo?

Idk about being a "champion of every major liberal cause out there" but he has definitely 'championed' the idea that boys are lucky to be sexually abused by adult women, general transphobia, and the sanctity of old white men being able to say the n-word.

I don't think donating a million bucks to the Democratic party and being a racist, sexist piece of shit is mutually exclusive either.
