Honestly fuck the fact that the market changed. People are going to miss magazines when they are gone and it pisses me off.
The lack of job security in this industry is baffling. It's a real issue and it keeps talented people away. This is the shit that keeps me up at night, wondering if I should just go write boring copy for Fortnite. These are all smart people who will land on their feet, but this is happening in the cruelest possible way.
They must not miss them that much or they would be buying them
They can start a patreon then!
I hear what you're saying but at the end of the day: Reduced cost+Convenience > HardcopyHonestly fuck the fact that the market changed. People are going to miss magazines when they are gone and it pisses me off.
This is such a shame. I only know Shocking Alberto and his works but I am sorry for all of them losing their employment all of a sudden. I really hope they land on their feet asap.
Generally, are employers not required to give notice for such an event in advance?
Not really, no. When I worked at MTV, I was a "permalancer," which meant I got a "salary" that was actually paid out hourly like a contractor, so they could avoid giving me benefits. It also meant when the 2008 recession hit, they could let me go without benefits, without severance. My boss heard about the looming cuts two weeks (!!) before they were going to tell the org's permalancers, and he gave me a heads up so I could start looking for another job.

A really shitty part of this is they're all in the middle of nowhere, so they basically all have to move to the east or west coast to get a job in the industry
Good lord I thought these GI staff were enlisted as "Employees" on the payroll not god damn self employed contractors. This is such shit, honestly. Thank you for disclosing this information.
His tweet says "his position" is gone, so it's not that he was fired or they are replacing him with cheaper staff. The whole position is gone.
...what was his title? I see others are pointing out the Nintendo editor is gone too. It's gonna be a graveyard after today.
I think it was West Coast Editor or something? Can't seem to find it now, but that's what I remember from when he was on KF.His tweet says "his position" is gone, so it's not that he was fired or they are replacing him with cheaper staff. The whole position is gone.

According to the staff page, which still shows them all:I think it was West Coast Editor or something? Can't seem to find it now, but that's what I remember from when he was on KF.
Minneapolis is not "the middle of nowhere" but I understand your point about the industry.A really shitty part of this is they're all in the middle of nowhere, so they basically all have to move to the east or west coast to get a job in the industry
They probably are but they aren't given 2 week notices because it's not required. It's fucking trash.
It's not surprising. Being apart of gamestop is likely why they still exist while every other gaming magazine has disappeared. I recently went to the magazine section of my Walmart and it was one of the most depressing things I've seen.
I don't know if he's gone or what, but Jeff Marchiafava tweeted this
