First off, my apologies to Era staff if they feel this doesn't deserve a thread - I think there's a lot of misinformation/ignorance towards Biden's platform to begin with, and that these were worth pointing out in a more specific thread than banishing it to the primary thread or PoliEra:

Updates to the Biden plan to grow a stronger, more inclusive middle class

In that spirit, today, Biden is adopting two ideas championed by Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren that will help grow a stronger, more inclusive middle class. Senator Sanders, Senator Warren, and Vice President Biden share the goal of strengthening college as a reliable pathway to the middle class and ensuring that no American is unable to reach or to stay in the middle class because of insurmountable debt. These policies are detailed below.

Today, Biden is adding to his agenda by adopting Senator Sanders' proposal to make public colleges and universities tuition-free for all students whose family incomes are below $125,000. This proposal, part of Senator Sanders and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal's College for All Act of 2017, will help roughly 8 out of every 10 families. In addition to his $70 billion investment in HBCUs and MSIs, Biden will also invest additional funds in private, non-profit four-year Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and under-resourced Minority-Serving Institutions and require these schools to use the additional funds to lower costs for low-income and middle-class students.

Biden is adopting Senator Warren's comprehensive proposal, Fixing Our Bankruptcy System to Give People a Second Chance. In 2005, Biden worked hard to add progressive reforms to a bankruptcy bill that was going to be passed with or without him. Today, he agrees firmly with Senator Warren that we need to fundamentally reshape our bankruptcy system.

As described by Senator Warren in her plan, this plan will:

  • Make it easier for people being crushed by debt to obtain relief through bankruptcy.
  • Expand people's rights to take care of themselves and their children while they are in the bankruptcy process.
  • End the absurd rules that make it nearly impossible to discharge student loan debt in bankruptcy.
  • Let more people protect their homes and cars in bankruptcy so they can start from a firm foundation when they start to pick up the pieces and rebuild their financial lives.
  • Help address shameful racial and gender disparities that plague our bankruptcy system.
  • Close loopholes that allow the wealthy and corporate creditors to abuse the bankruptcy system at the expense of everyone else.

Seems like an obvious flex to get ahead of some of Bernie's talking points before the debate tonight. It'll be interesting to see if Biden adopts any other of the more leftist proposals in an attempt to curry favor with Bernie or Warren, and perhaps win endorsements from them (Warren has already dropped out, but hasn't yet endorsed anyone). Specifically I'd hope any commitment to free four-year college would be bundled with some form of student loan debt forgiveness, and maybe something better on healthcare and climate.

Nice.

Edit - Steal good ideas and give credit to those you stole from. Not bad. Not bad at all.

He's going to be our nominee and with Trump likely taking a hit due to a very slow Corona response, it's time to throw our weight behind him

No way in hell he actually sticks with this stuff but it's a smart smokescreen on his campaign's part.

So many people here said Biden would never do stuff this, and they'll be mysteriously absent from this thread.

Good.

whoever wins is going to have to pick a vp with extraordinary tactical and strategic care

at least this mess has warped policy in some positive ways

More progressive candidates always pull the more moderate to the left, even if a little. The same happened with Hillary in 2006 because of Bernie

Can't knock it if he actually goes through with it but also sure does say something when suddenly the moderate "safe" candidate is now taking ideas from more progressive candidates.

Yeah I am confused. Bernie did introduce something in 2017 that is equivalent to this plan, but I thought he has been campaigning on making college free for everyone. Means tested socialism is not a stable solution. See Republicans trying to defund Medicaid every chance they get.

Obviously think this is better than nothing, but it really needs to be free for everyone (even rich people).

Bernie's plan is to eliminate all student loan debt by taxing wall street speculation.

It's not even close

As a huge bernie supporter I'm not going to act like this isn't a step in the right direction but the means testing is bullshit.

it only creates waste having to create the administration to support this. Also creates and easy path to be attacked from the right. And believe me, There can and will be easy ways to create road blocks for those eligible.

and scrutiny on Biden's ability to follow through is perfectly warranted. He needs to be challenged, it's the only way to put a fire under his ass and work for us.

also 120k is to low, so many families willstill struggle in places like California and New York. Especially when things like medical debt continues to crush families.
It's a step, but not good enough of one.

I guess student loan forgiveness was too radical for Joe.

His current plan is to make it so that you only have to repay student loans if you are making over 25,000 a year and that the amount you can be forced to repay annually is capped at 5% of your income over that 25,000. Anything left after 20 years would be forgiven. It's not perfect, but that's a hell of a lot better than what we have now. In addition, he's proposed offering the option to get 10,000 in forgiveness per year for five years for those who take public sector jobs.

Nah, they will just move the goal posts 'I'll believe it when I see it' posts are coming
You make this idea sound like some petty, purity test bullshit instead of a legitimate concern. Why shouldn't we worry about Joe keeping his word on enacting these policies?

Sounds fantastic! It's too late to help me, but anything to help others address this crisis. And I love the idea of Biden adopting others' policies (or portions thereof) and giving them credit.

Joe is literally "I am the Democratic Party" candidate, and this shows where the party itself has moved.

I mean, no way Bernie did either, and you're a fool to think otherwise.

This is good because he's adopting the far left position at least so there's a lot of room to maneuver and get it done with congress. Instead of the shitty DLC method of starting from the middle and moving right.

I don't actually believe he'll push for any of this when he's elected, but given this is the only shot we got, I'll take it.
