Has anyone had success with inserts for rolling ankles? I noticed that my left ankle over pronates more than my right and when standing flat it def rolls inward more. I ordered an insole to try and stabilize it more on the downstroke. I think this may one of my problems because I see my knee knock slightly when pedaling.

I've fallen over a few times. lol

It's been a long time since I had a bad fall, but I have had SEVERAL mini-but-painful falls as hipster girls with their voluminous-hair-under-jauntily-angled-helmets on wrong, or heavily bearded IPA enthusiast-Yellow Bike renters come to an unsignaled screeching halt on the Burke Gilman trail and I reactively come to a stop before being able to unclip from pedals. Nothing less dignified than internally yelling "Timber!' as you slowly and majestically fall sideways to the pavement.

My June stats. The conversion to metric is below the image.

KTMqOHz.jpg

1,226 km.
16,629 m.

The start of June didn't have the best weather but the end of the month made up for it and has continued into July so hoping for bigger numbers if this month continues with the nice weather.

Haha I remember thinking Tiiiiimbeeeeer as I realised the only way I wasn't going to collide with my collie as he had decided it was time to run across me and stop was to bin the bike.

Or the more common "I'm OK".

Or the slightly less common "eeeuurrrrrrgggghhhhh mraaaaagggghhhhh".

Felt very much like weakness entering the body. I can barely walk now.

Then everyone coming and asking are you ok when all I'm worried about its my dog, so I'm yeah yeah I'm fine let me check my did he looks worried... But your leg... Tis but a flesh wound the bleeding will stop soon.

Since we're sharing June stats,
It was a good one for me.

E: I still don't know how to post pics, dammit!

There is a share button in your Strava june stats mail.
Pick facebook or twitter or whatever, then you can just press copy image and paste it here.
Nothing else to it!

Impressive!

For those becoming parents soon, be prepared to see a drop in your riding time :D
My daughter is about to become a year old.
It's a great trade off though. She's a blast :)

My neighbour was chatting excitedly with me about getting back on the bike soon (his little boy is three). Except... his wife is 8 months pregnant.

Poor guy. lol

Yeah Mine is now a month old, it's great, and I will still get my commute in which is 25km one way. I only started riding with m hybrid a Month or so ago. But it's totally worth it she is just the best :)

Thinking about getting some proper cycling shoes and also pondering if I go clipless or just buy one for Flat pedals.

You can get pedals that clip in on one side and are just flat platforms on the other side, which gives you the option of wearing either proper cleated shoes or just normal footwear.

You'll get varied opinions regarding clipless: some people swear by them and others just swear at them :D

There's no problem riding with shoes on spd-sl (shimano road pedals). you don't necessary have to get ugly and heavy combi pedals.

physio treatment has to be one of the most painfull things a human can do voluntarily, childbirth can't possibly be as bad, even if it lasts longer. Especially when they make the muscle extra sore by jabbing it with needles and then puts his elbow into it

Given that the poster in question isn't riding the Tour, and presumably isn't interested in spending over a hundred quid on some top-end road pedals, I'm not sure he's going to care about an extra 100g (if that) for a set of SPD combi pedals over some equivalently-priced SPD-SLs. As for ugly, combi pedals look fine, and it's not as if you can see them when you're riding :D

It depends which kind of shoes he has/wants, but the 105 sl's are only 30-40dollars more expensive than the combis. Not to mention that the combis hurt like hell when they hit you on the ankle going through doors

Nice, I'd like to try a bikepacking trip some day.
You going solo or in a group?

On another note... I got my first Sprint KoM.
There's another one I'm chasing, been coming close but I'm missing 2 seconds on a 37 second sprint.

I decided I'm going to take up the online consulting for bike fitting to see if my assumptions about frame geo are right. I suspect I have a shorter torso than my legs and this would probably benefit from a shorter reach. However the problem is this is pretty damn hard to achieve without significantly downsizing a stock frame. If my hunch is true then I'm definitely going to move forward on a custom frame build over the winter.

You probably want the fitness thread or running thread...

(Unless runs here means something else)

That said, it entirely depends on how hard you went and for how long. Takes a lot longer to recover from a marathon at race pace than an easy 5k.

Thanks for the Tips, wasn't interested in Road shoes, since I will use them on commutes and will need to walk around in them a bit, when getting groceries on the way home. Decided to go for a Shimano MT54, which where on sale at my LBS and got some SPD combi pedals, Seems to be fine so far did a 30 km ride yesterday with them and it's way better then with normal sneakers.

Ugh... fucking leg shavers. What's wrong with you people. lol

Pretty much the only really good reason is if you get a lot of massages (I do just fine with hair) and if you're worried about road rash (definitely better to be shaven).

Hi people. I came and asked for advice maybe 4 years ago in the equivalent thread on gaf when I first started cycling, I got a lot of good stuff out of that. At that time I was hoping to do a long distance trip across china, though I ended up not doing it by bike and instead bought a tuktuk and attempted it via that vile machine. I failed because those things suck at mountains, still traveled a bunch, and traveled across china via various other means of transport.

Anyway after that trip I started working again and it's been a hectic couple years that saw me with no time to exercise or cycle and ended up gaining 20-30 pounds.

Just recently quit my job and started riding a bit for the first time in two years. Planning to do a bunch of short trips, like from a few days up to a month, around various parts of China. Gonna take pics and maybe vlog I guess, if I can find a unique way to do it. In between trips work on my new business and relax in SE Asia. Gonna travel to Usa for awhile first and relax and see family and drop most of my shit off since I'm leaving my apartment in Shanghai. Big changes. I know this isn't my blog here lol but just wanna say thanks for the advice and encouragement that this thread provides in the future and has in the past, even though I don't think I've commented here since the great transition, I have checked in on the thread plenty of times.

Looking forward to joining in on the convo more often in the future and sharing adventures from time to time. Can't wait to get back on the road.

Hey guys, new to the cycling obsession and have been riding my hybrid literally everywhere I go, I can't get enough of being on the bike.

I decided recently though to upgrade to a proper road bike and tried out a couple of trek bikes as well as the specialized tarmac and Roubaix at my local bike shop, and came down to liking the fit of the Roubaix better. After doing a ton of research and finding almost all positives about the Roubaix, I went ahead and had the bike shop order in the red 2018 Roubaix expert which is supposed to arrive Thursday.

While I do believe the Roubaix fits my biking needs better than the Tarmac as I would mostly be commuting 14 miles round trip to and from work, doing laps in Prospect Park, and going on longish weekend rides with friends, I am beginning to have doubts that the endurance geometry is necessary for any of that as I am mid 20s, relatively fit, and am reading more and more that the Tarmac Expert is a relatively comfortable race road bike that could do all the things I want and possibly provide more room for growth and more punch in each ride. I initially liked the Roubaix better but I imagine if the Tarmac took some getting used to it could still be worth it.

Did I fudge? I could also talk to the bike shop again but they didn't seem to think there was that much of a difference between the Roubaix and the Tarmac, especially for such a novice rider as myself.

Anyone here have any particular insight into this? Thanks for any replies.

That's speculation. The only measurement I'm aware of actually found an astonishingly significant reduction.

I'm more inclined to believe the F1 wind tunnel specialist in this case tbh.

Either way, in these kinds of cases where there is one set of evidence for shaving and one against it.
It's probably negligible or way to dependent on rider position/ situation.

I'll keep my legs nice 'n furry.

Sagan doesn't seem to need it either :P

Specialized Tarmac vs. Roubaix

According to reviews the two bikes are pretty close in terms of fit.
You can dial the Tarmac or Roubaix in to fit whatever you need or want out of it with minor adjustments.

That said, I'd think about what you'd like to develop yourself in as a rider.
The tarmac is a bit stiffer and that is something that won't be adjustable in terms of fit. Stiffer bikes are less comfortable but faster.
The roubaix on the other hand is a bit less stiff and will be more comfortable on longer rides.

I ride an endurance bike myself and I'm super happy with it.
I'm nowhere near being a pro and the added comfort is something I'd always value over minor aero or stiffness gains.
Being able to stay comfortable for longer while riding also helps to keep you riding faster. While on a stiffer bike you might ride a bit faster but lose that speed due to discomfort.
There are multiple angles here as you can see.

Yeah, that last bit makes for a good argument. If you're on a 4 hour ride but for the last hour you're having to stretch your back / quads / deal with wrist pain etc then you're not going to be putting in your full pace.

I think that the Roubaix is the best all around road bike on the market today. It will also open up alot of endurance riding for you. At the end of the day, ignore the internet and focus on what you enjoyed riding the most.

I am currently a Specialized dealer (leaving the industry this September :( ) and swear by the Roubaix Expert. I am buying the red one myself this Summer. Post photos when you get it! :D

Thanks for the replies and quelling any doubts, I'm extremely excited to pick up the bike tomorrow or Friday and will definitely post pictures! It really did feel like the right fit and I'm probably overbiked either way so I'm just going to ride the hell out of it and enjoy every second.

You are not overbiked. You buy a bike for not just the rider you are today, but the rider you want to be in the future. :)

You should come out to NJ for the Fondo!

I think it's time the UCI threw out the 2 triangle rule. I want to see people riding crazy-ass superbikes.

On the flip-side there should be IROC-style races where everyone has to use the same frame and wheels.
