Midgar, With Love
Got a hankering to revisit this gem sometime soon. I figure the odds are slim that the game looks or performs better on Switch, but the port was warmly received, so I might as well check.

I think the original xbox version only supported 4:3 whereas the Switch is full 16:9.

Isnt the Xbox version just the OG Xbox release while the Switch version is based on the new Remaster that was on mobile/pc ? I would go with the Widescreen Switch release tbh.

I believe that the one on Xbox is Xbox one x enhanced. So it will be a higher resolution than the one on switch. But it's still the old assets and 4:3. Don't know if the switch version upgraded anything other than the resolution and aspect ratio. Did it?

The PC version hasn't received any updates yet (that's Kotor II) and the android one has certain effects cut. Right now the best version is the Switch one.

How strange lol. Xbox BC has been turning OG Xbox games into 16:9 at 4k with HDR automatically. But because of how this was ported, they can't? XD haha.

Fun.

I'd go for the 4K, 60 fps, HDR version on Xbox in the original aspect ratio, without some of the annoying pop-ups and glitches the Switch version has. That assumes of course you don't want to play portably. Plus, if you already own it for Xbox (disc or digital) you don't need to re-purchase it to play on modern hardware.

Is there a reason to ever play something on switch instead of somewhere else except for portability?

Really? Personally I like playing old games in 4:3 unless they supported 16:9 natively, makes it feel more authentic

I'm on this boat with TV shows where there was usually some artistic choice behind every framing, but for games where your character is just always in the center I think widescreen modes are just more utilitarian.

Opposite for me. Whenever I play a 4:3 game I can't stand knowing I could see more if it was 16:9. I know it'd break some old games, but for 3D games it's just a huge benefit. The main upgrade from the GC to the Wii for me was that almost every game was 16:9, I loved it.

What Xbox games were converted to 16:9? I didn't know that was a thing.
Some games released on the original Xbox supported widescreen as an option. If playing via backwards compatibility, the system will detect and automatically set the display as 16:9 if so.

If I'm not mistaken, most (if not all) games on console until PS3/XB360 used anamorphic solutions to achieve widescreen. That is to say, you are sacrificing horizontal resolution while increasing your field of vision. However, I'm not 100% sure if that is the case with Xbox or games running in backwards compatibility mode.

Can't speak to the Switch version but I replayed the Xbox version this year and the combination of 4K, auto HDR and SSD loading/saving was lovely. Will start Sith Lords at some point soon and I really didn't miss the 16:9.

Did they patch the big ass text box yet?
i hope they did or do soon, was the one thing holding me back

They said it was intentional design… but that they're open the feedback. Tbh the Switch version hasn't had an update yet afaik and it's not just the big ass text box that's a problem, it's apparently missing voice lines, grunts and death sounds throughout the game outside of dialogue.

I wanna get it on Switch but I'll be waiting for a patch tbh.
