Anyone who didn't vote for this then simply he \ she didn't finish it to realise how much of a masterpiece the game is.

Is it really a masterpiece if the reason I didn't finish it is because I was both bored to death after 20 or so hours of grinding and ear-shredding music, and totally turned off by annoying characters? I think SE have utterly exhausted my good will and nostalgia for this series at this point.

At least DQ Builders is good.

I don't think Nier: Automata is a JRPG but it's the best game on the list.
Nier Automata is kinda stretching it, in terms of JRPG, but for the best overall package, it's between than that and DQ11.

For favorite though, it's Ys 8.

Okay, help me out here. How is Nier any more controversial on this list than Ys? Or Kingdom Hearts, for that matter? All three are just action games with experience points.

Persona 5, but only because I haven't played DQXI.

I've only played Dragon Quest IX, but I love the fuck out of it. Is it similar to that?
A lot of similarities as far as basic gameplay is concerned but with more refinement and QoL improvements. The game is also more focused on single player with no multiplayer components, allowing for actual fleshed out party members and a more story-driven narrative.

Nier is best game, but i think if we are talking about JRPGs in the traditional turn based sense then P5. I voted Nier though, because i can't help it.

First answer in the poll is FFXV and FFXIV is nowhere to be found. Just pure heresy.

Anyway, FFXIV is the best JRPG of the decade. Of these poll choices, Nier: Automata. Of the poll options that don't require an asterisk next to "JRPG," Persona 5.

While Nier Automata is my game of the gen, I won't necessarily call it as a jrpg. My top selection would be Trails of Cold Steel 3, if you played all the prior games, or Saga Scarlet Grace

1. Ys 8
2. Nier Automata
3. FF12 Zodiac Age
4. Resonance of Fate 4K
5. Trails of Cold Steel 4K

Avoid Persona 5 and DQ11 unless you enjoy being bored to death. FF15 is neither great nor bad, but I'd just play better games instead if I were you.

A lot of people seem to think anime art style = JRPG. There are even some fools out there who insist Demon's/Dark Souls and Bloodborne are WRPGs.

Personally, I'm fine with categorising FFXV, Mana, Ys, KH, Nier, Bloodborne, etc as Action RPGs but I'm also not against including all those Action RPGs within the JRPG genre because it isn't the 90s and we can't just define what a JRPG is based on what Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest did back on the NES/SNES. But if you're going to exclude one, you have to exclude them all.

I voted for Nier Automata because it's the best game in the poll but I would've voted for Bloodborne if it was there. Then in third place I'd have Dragon Quest XI. I really need to play Ys VIII and the Trails of Cold Steel series though. I've bought Cold Steel 1 on Vita but I was waiting for 4 to be on the horizon before starting it because I know I'd forget everything between games. Plus, by then maybe the PS4 ports of 1 and 2 would be out.

Persona 5 winning is disappointing, it's a shadow of Persona 4 in almost every way possible.

I wouldn't call Nier or Ys JRPGs at all. Both are great games, but RPGs? Nah.

I voted Dragon Quest XI, it was my first DQ game and I was blown away by the charm and heart that was in all aspects of the game.

Persona 5 was also pretty good, but I'll never love it because it failed to be anywhere near as good as P4 Golden.

Yep. Defining jrpg too narrowly just leads to a bunch of contradictions. Like when people say Fire Emblem's not one - because you move around on a grid or set movement area? So are Trails of Cold Steel and other rpgs that allow movement within a set area not jrpgs? Or games that aren't turn based, suddenly there are Final Fantasies that aren't jrpgs any more. Or if they lack an anime aesthetic, is Lost Odyssey not a jrpg then?

I think it makes way more sense to consider jrpg a category, with sub-genres within it.

Persona 5 for me. I loved that cast so much. Looking forward to revisiting that world with Royal.

No Bloodborne or Dark Souls 3? I'd pick those over any on the list then definitely DQ11. Then P5. I'm not going to count Nier Automata.

It'd be between Persona 5 or Cold Steel 3 for me; the former if you want something standalone and the latter if you've played the previous entries.

A rare poll where I've played all the games in it, so I'll give my opinion in all of them:

-FFXV: A game hold together by duct tape. Even after all the patches and DLCs, it's still an absolute mess. The fact that after all the post launch support the combat didn't get a rebalance baffles me to this day. Even something as simple as limiting the usable potions similar to Kingdom Hearts would have done wonders to alleviate some of its problems, but no dice. Long story short, I don't like it at all, although aesthetically I love it and that fact carried me through the end.

-DQXI: The best way I can describe it is as if the dev team spent enormous amounts of effort and love into making an JRPG as bland, uninspired and vanilla as humanly possible. It's not just a bland game, it feels like there's been an incredibly meticulous consideration behind its blandness. It's weird.
Anyway, it's fun enough, but I never managed to continue with Act 3, I just don't have the interest. And for the love of god, this franchise needs modernizing. I don't mean changing the combat system for action or anything like that, I mean basic shit like showing percentages for resistances/weakness so you can actually use effective tactics instead of sticking with what seems to always work beyond the obvious elemental enemies.

-KHIII: Really like this one. The combat difficulty was too busted, but it still won me over with the keyblade switching. And more importantly, the disney worlds were actually worth something this time around, with some of them still being among the highlights of the year (I'm still in awe with how they did the Pirate's world).
The story is absolute garbage and I tolerate it only due to nostalgia, but I got to say that the final stretch was weak due to the heavy narrative presence and underwelming boss battles due to lack of difficulty (which hopefully the critical run will fix)

-Nier A: Not a fan. It's not that I think is bad, but I just don't manage to connect with anything in the game. It feels like a character focused story that doesn't flesh out its characters, and the way it tries to be "artsy" with how it narrates its story feels unnecesary to the point of undermining the experience. A bit sad that it doesn't click with me because I thought it would be right up my alley.

- Persona 5: Another one that I tried to really get into and failed every time. I just hate the calendar system, hate it with a passion. It's a padding mechanic where you grind for stats that its only purpose is to unlock more content (S Links) that are only blocked because there aren't enough events to fill a full calendar. I also don't think the writing is very good, and the combat is completely one note due to the One more system, but y major complaing is the calendar system, it ruins whatever possible enjoyment I could have with the game.
It's stylish as fuck though, and its combat UI does something that all turn based RPGs should do by tying commands to different buttons instead of sticking to the traditional list (Falcom has taken note of it, luckily)

Ys VIII: I loved it my first time around, although I ended up hating were the story went. Regardless, I still considered it as the best Ys I've played. However, replaying it on nightmare difficulty made me love it even more, and although I still hate the very end, I found the entire journey until that last revelation very enjoyable. Its gameplay loop is absolutely fantastic in my opinion, it always maintains momentum and handles the gradual exploration of the island perfectly. If it had a really strong narrative, I would go as far as to say it would have become one of the best games I've played. As it stands, it's one of the best games I played this generation. Loved it to bits.

Still, my actual pick is Trails of Cold Steel III. I loved every single minute of it, with chapter 3 and 4 taking the cake.

Hahaha. I can't agree in the slightest but that description was still amusing.

People that hate on DQXI boggle my mind. I have put so much time in the game and am amazed at how much content is packed away in it. And darn it if it doesn't have one of the most charming cast of party members I've seen in a while.

Persona 5. I really liked Nier and have tried to go back, but I can bring myself to get through even the A run. Hated DQXI's boilerplate approach.

Platinumed FFXV (vanilla, can't believe I have to attach that) and loved the open world sidequesting but once I got to the Venice inspired city it railroaded me into a story I had no clue about.

Never will play KH3 and never got around to Ys unfortunately.

Also FFXII: TZA is amazing.

I don't know about those others, but NieR never has you control a full party, does it? That's one of the big requirements to me for being a JRPG instead of just an RPG. Single-hero games don't meet that criteria. And if we've retconned that to be the case, then Yakuza Zero should easily win best JRPG; it has more actual roleplaying and character development than most games that call themselves RPGs these days.

But...then Dragon Quest 1, the game the entire genre is built on, isn't a jrpg anymore.

Voted "other" because I feel Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth is the best JRPG I've played on PS4. Phenomenal story and characters and a fun enough combat system. Biggest drawback is that it's the 3rd game in the franchise and the 2nd (Mask of deception) was disappointingly short and the first game (Utawarerumono) is only playable on the PC with a fan patched English translation until NISA brings over the PS4 remake.

If you can put Nier Automata, an action RPG, you can put Final Fantasy XIV among the choices.

For me, it's a tie between FFXIV and Persona 5.

Out of that list I'd say Nier Automata. If we are including ports as well, then I'd say Cold Steel is a pretty good one. FFXV despite its problems and shortcomings was also a really enjoyable experience.

Also another one that I don't think too many people appreciate and kinda falls into the same port category is Tokyo Xanadu eX+.
Persona 5 winning is disappointing, it's a shadow of Persona 4 in almost every way possible.

My vote is for a game that only exists in my head: Persona 3 with the QOL improvements from 5, FeMC, and The Answer in one package

Since we don't have that, I'm torn between Nier, Yakuza 0, and Trails

I confess to enjoying Atelier Ryza as well

I loved DQ XI, but now that I've played it on Switch it seems diminished

Automata is my favorite on that list but I voted on DQXI because it feels more JRPG to me.
