DMCV as Dante, God of War, Bloodborne.

But the top spot has to be Monster Hunter World. Hitting a SAED never gets old.

I'm replaying God of War right now and it has one of the best combat systems of any game i've ever played. It took a while for it to 'click' but it looks/feels incredible, has depth, requires skill, and feels super tactile and grounded, which is immensely impressive when it's you literally ripping apart heads.

Maybe not the best, but one of the most fun for me.

God Of war, FOr Honor, and Bloodborne all perfect the art of 'Easy to learn, hard to master'.

Require good concentration are cinematically great looking.

Also will echo doom eternal for shooting and Persona 5 for JRPG turn based combat.

Althought Titanfall 2's grappling hook and MGS V both have the best combat movement in gaming

Not sure if you could really count it since it is what the entire game is focused on but Mortal Kombat 11 was fantastic.

Devil May Cry 5, although it's simultaneously not as good as people would have it.

I guess i'm the only person that do no enjoy DMCV combat that much. I recall having more fun with DMCIV.

I'm really curious as to why, as on a base level it's basically the same combat.

Kind of depends on what we consider "this gen"; if the Wii U gets excluded, then Nioh would be my pick. If the Wii U can be included, then Bayonetta 2.

Others that I've played that I'd want to mention are Bloodborne, DOOM 2016, NieR: Automata, Transformers: Devastation, and Astral Chain. The last two are not my favorite games for reasons totally unrelated to combat, but the combat in each one is really good.

Also, not very far in but Ys VIII has a really punchy combat system that I actually really enjoy.

DMC5 and Sekiro for me, both have wildly different combat systems but both are equally as fantastic.

For Honor. Best melee combat ever imo.

Stances, parties, deflects, it's amazing. Sekiro, while enjoyable, is very one dimensional in comparison to me.

It's the weapon combat game I've wanted for decades. My ps4 is pretty much a FH machine the past 3 years.

Absolutely. You can play any mode with just AI bots if you don't want PvP. They're also PvE AI, team up with people against bots or just play solo.
You can play for years solo, leveling up, collecting and customizing gear.

Like Souls games, fashion is huge. Ha.

sounds like my type of game. May wait for complete edition to go on sale. $100?!

Not sure, it's been a long time, maybe my taste changed since then, but DMCV did nothing for me overall.

Sekiro is very good but it's a bit of a one-trick pony. It does that job the best in the business (parrying/clashing) but the other aspects of its combat aren't as spectacular, especially since the variety of combat is limited.

DMC5 lets you do nearly anything as long as you have the execution for it.

Also none of the competition lets you dual wield motorcycle chain saws so they all lose by default.

My pick is DOOM Eternal, it is the best ranged combat in any game and the best combat a Western-developed game has ever had.

I'd also say Half-Life: Alyx as an alternative but I feel it's somewhat unfair to compare VR combat to pancake combat.

I'm going with Sekiro as well.

It says something of much fun you are having with a combat system when after downing a boss that gave you some trouble you can experience few momemnts of exhilaration and then immediately after you are left with a vague sense of disappointment that you can't enjoy the "flow" of that fight anymore (until the next playthrough).

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. Not the best as it can be intentionally frustrating at points, but by far the most unique in how it merged gameplay, story and character into a system.

I have no idea how some random Western devs ended up creating the best arena fighter ever made on their first try. I need to watch that documentary one day.

The animation system is also the first example (that I'm aware of) of the mocap animation blending tech being used in Last of Us 2.

FF7 Remake combat is sublime. Sekiro is probably tops for me though. Bloodborne a close second.

God of War. I don't know if it is the objectively best, there are probably many deeper, more intricate systems, but I liked God of War's combat the best. It was fast, exhilharating, flashy, fun and it did have depth and lots of room for experimentation if you wanted to do that.

I'll sing to the choir and go with Sekiro. I've played my fair share of action games and none of them simulated the feel of being in a swordfight as well as Sekiro. Yeah, there are games with deeper combat systems, but playing Sekiro gave me a fundamentally different experience than any of them. It's truly unique for me.

Also Divinity 2; the best turn based combat system I've ever played hands down. The amount of creative shit you can do is staggering, it's a joy to interact with all of its systems.

This gen has been pretty good for combat systems.

Unranked but I will say Sekiro for how kinetic it feels and being all about trying to thread the needle between defensive and aggressive styles of play. Too many games are built around either being very aggressive or being passive and not greedy. Sekiro is about keeping in the middle as much as possible.

DMC5 for being super expressive. Basically the opposite of Sekiro, you tell the game how you want to play it and find as many ways to bully stuff as you can with your own unique playstyle.

I'd like to say Doom Eternal but it's too overdesigned with all the cooldown stuff. If it was a little streamlined it would be much better, I don't have trouble juggling all the systems but it felt a bit too much like an MMO sometimes.
