My vote goes to sekiro, but even though I really don't like dmc, I believe the fans. So would be willing to concede to that.

This really is the thread for my people. If you change the thread title to "best games of the generation", I'd still be very pleased with the answers so far.

Sekiro's combat is great. But I will go with Bloodborne instead. Tthere's just much more variety in the long run.

Nioh 2 has way more variety and is just as fast paced as the next closest thing listed here.

Midgar
Final Fantasy VII Remake by a far, far margin. It's a very biased opinion of course, but I went into the game never liking any Action JRPG system I had tried beforehand, I went in very, very sceptical, I thought I would dislike the gameplay but just enjoy the ride for the story.

I loved it so much that I'll be replaying the whole game Hard and 100%ing everything.

Controversial opinion: I wouldn't trust post 2014 platinum with it tho💀
Damn, that's harsh.

Automata controls like a dream, though the combat as a whole is kind of shitty. I think I'd trust that team if their focus was on delivering combat instead of story, they seem pretty competent.

Can't say I blame you for this opinion, though.

Nioh (1&2)
Sekiro
Bloodborne
GoW
Astral Chain
Horizon (ranged combat)
FF7 Remake
Spiderman
Gears 5

in that order for me. Never liked DMC combat after 1 and 3.

It's more disappointment that they put out their best 2 combat systems super early on(Bayo 1 and Vanquish) and in like 10 years since then they haven't topped those 2. They are still good at what they do, but I get disappointed knowing that peaked early

Sekiro or Nioh 2 for me.

Also really liked DMC5 combat, I'm just bad at it tho lol, so I couldn't really appreciate it as much as other people in this thread.

Disappointed there are only a handful of Monster Hunter World mention.

Edit : Also Divinity Original Sin 2 for Turn based combat

People will shit on me here but for me it's probably Spider-Man. Loved the speed, fluidity and animations. The amount of gadgets and how varied they were was pretty awesome as well.

It's not that controversial, just easily overlooked

I kinda forgot Spider-Man, man that Games Combat was surprisingly really good. Imo the best Combat System from any Western Action Game i have ever played

I expected Arkham Asylum and I got proto-DMC instead.

The combat was surprisingly free-form, you can change your mind anytime in mid combo.

Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, Nioh, Monster Hunter World are all equally amazing.

If we're talking "third person melee action combat" then it's probably either Sekiro or Devil May Cry 5, depending on what you want out of that genre. Personally I think this generation was a step down. Nothing comes close to Metal Gear Rising or Ninja Gaiden.

Now, if we're talking "combat in general" as in any way to make living things not living, then DOOM takes the cake. Best in the goddamn genre let alone the generation. I haven't played Eternal yet so I'm not sure if that's better, worse or just about the same.

Sekiro is my answer but shout out to Uncharted 4 and TLL. They finally nailed the hybrid TPS/platforming/stealth mechanics with some spectacular vertical arenas, it's absolutely thrilling.
