I can only see this being problematic if you don't like the implication that police often shoot black men in the back of the head

How would "RESPECT drunk men when you're walking down the street so that you don't get raped" sound? Good use of the word, in your opinion?

I literally have no idea what your point is here. Not that it matters, because this:

You mean "concerned"?
Call me crazy but maybe the Dem nominee shouldn't have such serious health issues that they can't attend a funeral (Jimmy Carter was at Bush's) given how much harder it would be on the ticker to campaign vigorously nationwide for the next 12 months, or if that's not the issue and "Bernie is back", have problems with prominent African American Dem politicians to the extent that you're not invited to their funeral (not sure "but he once got arrested at a civil rights protest" makes up for that) when even Mitch McConnell is there...

Explains it all pretty succintly. You just have a hate boner for Sanders and are not arguing in good faith.

Agreed.

Again, if you're going to ask someone the question, be prepared for them to give you the correct answer. even if it is an old, pasty white guy.

Seemed like the audience didn't disagree.

His answer should have been "I'm dropping out of the presidential race and supporting Amy Klobuchar"
That is not Marianne Williamson

The whole answer is from a place of privilege and lack of understanding. Black folks know their rights the problem is those rights are conditional on the police respecting them. That is why soverign citizen shit works for white people, and black people get their lip busted in for holding a puppy

He outright says that the officers respect is not guaranteed and that they will very easily be racist AF and looking for an excuse to execute you.

The only thing that's problematic here is that an OLD WHITE MAN has more progressive street cred than other Dem candidates. The visceral hatred for Bernie never was and never will be based on anything more than just that.

I don't see anything wrong with his full answer, and to be honest even the shortened quote isn't even that bad. But hey ho, we're in primary season so we have to find something to talk about.

Brash and badly worded, but he wasn't coming from a bad place in what he attempted to say. Some, unaware of his history, could reasonably not take it well. Others, who chomp at the bit to tear him down, will purposefully misinterpret his position

Seeing your post history, + this post. You're not being genuine. I've seen your type before. You can't help yourself. You'll be gone eventually. So I'm not gonna fall for your shit any further and get caught up in it.. Peace.

I think this is a hard question to answer well, to be honest. My real advice would probably be even more prosaic. Something like "keep your hands on the steering wheel until the cop reaches your window and don't reach for your papers without telling the cop you're about to reach for your papers." That's what I think about when I get pulled over, although I'm not black.

I don't really think, from context, Bernie was trying to say "be respectful," he was trying to say "the cop can kill you no matter what, so you pretty much just need to convince them not to." Just another uneven answer that gives people the opportunity to read it badly or well.

yeah the Clintons are very popular with black voters??? I mean Biden is winning the black vote now and he was good friends with white supremacists.
Biden is winning fewer than Hillary was in 2016. The demographic shifted heavily in 92, 04 and 08. Its not an immovable demo and tbe only reason people think that is if their only interaction with and awareness of Dem primaries was 2016.
Same reason Biden will win the Dem nomination coasting on the Black vote?
He's not going to win.

They need *something* to try to reclaim the narrative after multiple progressive women of color endorsed him.

Is he wrong? Give the police any excuse they can use whatsoever to shoot you and they'll take it. A lot of the time they don't even need an excuse.

There's nothing really wrong with his full answer, but he didn't start it off right. The OPs quote is the wrong way to answer. All said, he ended up with an okay answer.

His response is more or less fine. Could've been worded better but it's off the cuff. Everyone knows what he meant and he's not a revolutionary socialist so he's not going to say "fuck the pigs, dismantle the police force" or something.

Everybody knows the qualifications for becoming US President:

-Born citizen of US
-35 years or older
-Resident for 14 years
-Attended Elijah Cummings' funeral

Bye-bye Bernie

Yep. There is a good to great chance that said officer who pulled you over is a narsissitic sociopath, on the force to make himself or herself feel artificially strong and powerful. Don't give the mothafucka an excuse to demand his authoritaaaay be respected. Black bodies have died for less. If they do some shit, you can get rich (or your family you end up survived by).

Black family truths, 101.

I'm realizing that OP is some sort of Machiavellian mastermind who is baiting us centrists into defending Bernie by posting the most disingenuous threads they can.

Well played, OP. Well played.

There is literally no sane reason to back Bernie over Warren.

I get why in 2016.

But now? Warren has better and more progressives policies on *everything* than Bernie
.

The only thing he has now is he is a white dude. Warren crushes him on every policy.

It's nearing 3AM here and I'm genuinely at a loss whether to look at this as sarcasm, trolling, or sheer ignorance. Warren more progressive than Bernie on everything... Alright, man.

The whole statement still sounds bed. The fact is it doesn't matter WHAT you do or how you act. It's all depending on if said cop wants to be a murderer. Period.

Is what he should have said. Or better yet say he is white so he can't answer that question but he will address it as president. But no he says dumb shit and people are going out their way to make it like it was a good answer

What's the right answer?

I know even if you show respect or deference there's no guarantee the cop won't kill or arrest or wound you, but is there a better approach to take for young black men who get pulled over?
