The X1X already supports it and it's great. The ps4 pro not supporting it and treating 1440p screens like 1080p is was a big disappointment to me.

I would hold off until we get definitive proof. By that phrasing, "support" could still mean 1080p scaled, same as PS4 Pro.

Uh huh.

I was going into this thread knowing it would be super vague and not definitive at all and after reading it that's exactly what it ended up being.

ok good.

but why did it take so long to confirm this?

EDIT: ok so it's still not from Sony themselves. might want to change the OP to reflect this

What's everyone opinion on the Benq monitor that's recommended in the OP? Tempted into buying it for PS5.

Man, I got the LG C8 which can do 1080p 120 fps. I am sure it could also do 1440p 120 technically... I hope some games still look great in 1080p 120 fps HDR without VRR, I hope PS5 supports that mode natively.

I'll believe it when I see it.
It's still unlikely to support FreeSync-over-HDMI even if it does support 1440p, so it would be a fixed 120Hz and not VRR with monitors.
I'd love to be wrong about it though, as it would be good if both next-gen consoles have proper support for monitors without requiring HDMI 2.1 for 120Hz VRR.
That would lower the cost of entry significantly.

Does the LG CX do 1440p?
The CX supports 4K120 VRR (subsampled) over HDMI 2.0.
The C9 supports 1440p120 VRR over 2.0 and 4K120 VRR over 2.1.

I believe the C8 supports fixed 1440p120 over 2.0, and the C7 fixed 1080p120.
EDIT: My bad, anything earlier than the C9 either supports 1080p120 fixed refresh, or has no 120Hz support at all.

C8 does not support 1440p120, only 1080p120. :(

I don't believe it and I certainly welcome a helping a crow if it turns out to be true. 1440p would be fucking huge. I really don't want a 4k monitor.

Please be true.

I'm still waiting for the perfect 1440p monitor to be released.

I should probably just buy a TV.

I hope they do.

1440p 120hz support over HDMI 2.0 is a great feature. I wouldn't reccomend it for PS5, since I suspect we'll get significantly more 4k60 titles than we'll get 120hz titles, but it would still be a nice option if you already have a monitor, or just really care more about 120hz than 4k.

From the specs, sounds like a one of their professional oriented display that got repurposed for entertainment. So an ips with color garmut that is better than average, but you are still locked at 60hz and the HDR is only 400 nits. If HDR is a priority I would aim for at least 600.

People need to understand that 'supporting 1440p' doesn't necessarily mean an increased framerate.
It all depends on the games. Each game has modes: 4k/30, 1080p60.. whatever. Those are specific options and are locked.
The PS5 then scales these modes to a 1080p, 2160p (or now a 1440p) image.

When you are playing PS5 on a 1440p display, you are getting the exact same visuals and framerate as when you play on a 4K display, just scaled down do a 1440p output resolution. If a games is 30fps, then it's 30fps. Downgrading from a 4k to 1440p monitor won't change that.

I think there are 2 prongs to people running around in circles asking for this.

"I don't want to buy a new TV, my existing TV / PC monitor is good enough for next generation"

And /or

"A console that targets 4K is a waste. No games are ever going to be more than 1440p AND more than 60fps"
This BenQ article has even leant into this to try and sell a few monitors.

Good TVs need to get cheaper so people don't have to make such big compromises to their next gen machine's visuals

Massive win for monitor users, I've been asking this question forever and it's finally answered

Too bad I already went and bought a CX but fuck it

I'm at a weird intersection with this. Have a C8, which only supports 4K/60 (no VRR), and while I can get it to do 1440p on PC, it can't with consoles AFAIK. Then I also have a 1440p FreeSync monitor. Not honestly sure when I would opt to use the monitor for the console though, especially since more often than not the times I actually use it for PC gaming are when the games simply control much better with a mouse and keyboard and I want a higher frame rate. The monitor also can't really do proper HDR, and in terms of picture quality, there's no real comparison between the two to be had.

Do they actually know anything?
They're saying that HDR 400 is good enough and you don't need HDMI 2.0.

So clearly they're selling their monitors.

LMAO, the hell it is. It might be considered barely passable if the IPS monitors that said HDR is typically on had black levels that would give the necessary contrast ratio, but the way it currently stands, HDR400 and HDR600 may as well just be nothing but marketing gimmicks since they are both functionally shit. We won't have good HDR on PC monitors until at least mini-LED does it, but probably not until micro-LED sometime in the distant future.

Feel like my question hasn't been understood. Monitor has 2.0

A game on PS5/XSX runs at 4k120. But 2.0 can only do 1440/120. What happens?

Based on how the X1X works, the console recognizes that the display will not accept the 4K/120 signal (due to the HDMI 2.0 bottleneck) and drop to 1440/120. I'm pretty sure the console settings govern the ceiling for display output, and scale down accordingly by default.

Alternatively it may prioritize resolution, and just send a 4K/60 signal.

I just got a screen on Prime Day. Could have gotten a better one if it was only 1440p :(

Just picked up a Dell 4k monitor (S2721QS) and really am wanting to know if I should hold on to it, or return it and grab a 1440p/144hz monitor for roughly the same cost. Here's hoping 1440 is confirmed or denied soon.

the fact that it's just not been easily confirmed by Sony probably means it's not.

yet another fumble by this out of touch company

I'm really hoping it's because of the embargo is why they removed it ..maybe they weren't supposed to say anything in the first place . This honestly will dictate whether I keep it or not .
Because embargoes. People are only allowed to unbox the thing and share one world from Astro's Playroom.

We'll know as soon as they're allowed to share deep dives into UI features etc.

telling me nobody with PS5 currently hasnt tested this.
It really seems like an embargo thing . Nothing has been talked about when it comes to the UI save for that video they did themselves . It's frustrating as it can affect people waiting in the wings to buy a new monitor,tv or like me capture card ..

Yeah seems like a big embargo drop might be friday this week so lets hope they can talk about it. 99% sure once digital foundry can talk about it they will.
