While I agree that gaming journalism should be talking about this more, the community in general needs to make this a priority too. Unfortunately their struggles get little more than a shrug and "that sucks" regardless of whether we're talking in the gaming sphere or not.

He said he'd check it out, then silence. I think it's fair to hold someone with the power to actually dig into this with actual resources to account when they say they'll do a thing, inferring interest ... then nothing.

Have we had any statements from anyone mentioned in the OP about their exploitation of concentration camps?

At least we got someone's attention. AFAIK neither Sony nor Nintendo said anything explicit regarding the matter.

It's a frustrating feeling. The only words that ring in my mind are "what can I do?". It's one of those things where you try to come up with a solution for 10 minutes but end up without a lead. "Stop buying products made in China"? Good luck with that. "Don't buy anything that supports the CCP"? Everything you buy from China will support the CCP one way or another.

Maybe a way to solve this exists, but that requires knowledge from people who are trained in international affairs. Then that solution needs to be broadcasted to millions of people worldwide. Seems like nowadays you can have one type of person or the other, not both.

So in the meantime, people will be upset. But they will watch and wait, while nothing is done regarding the issue.

Insane that you caught a ban, I think the mods on gaming side need to re-think their stance on tone-policing. Good to have you back.
Apparently you can't voice your thoughts on how a public figure working as a journalist performs their job if they happen to have an account on this site, since it's "antagonising another user" (whose name or username wasn't even included in the post on this page). No one would ever think of banning for the posts in question if they were written about journalists working outside of games or about a politician.

If the CEO of Apple or Epic decides to make an account, am I allowed to criticize them still? Or would I be "antagonising another user" and get banned? Posters should be able to criticize public figures without fear of being banned.

Seriously wtf. It's honestly embarassing that mods here would have that reaction.

I understand that companies can't just click their fingers and suddenly move their production to a new country. I also understand that moving production and supply chains out of China is probably going to see you shut out of the Chinese market, and its a hugely important one for many countries.

The only solution is for companies to bite the bullet and move out of China, and for world governments to support that with sanctions.

I guess you can buy a console used at least. Money from digital sales will still go to Sony, but at least you wouldn't give them money for the hardware made with slave labour.

Nah man, you have to be consistent if you are truly principled about this. This is just 'ways I can still have fun with my videogames without me feeling too guilty about this'

I mean, it's not like PS5 / game console is essential for anyone to live a normal life or anything like that.

Has Nintendo ever said anything on the subject?

I heard a french actress talk about this terrible situation on the public radio yesterday, which is good news I guess. That made me question my Mario 3D All Stars preorder. I'm going to send them a mail over the weekend.

Nothing from Nintendo or Sony, and only a vague statement from Microsoft saying they'll look into it.

It's hard to get these companies to respond when you don't have journalists pressing them for answers. I've not seen or heard a single person from gaming sites like IGN, Gamespot, Giantbomb or Easy Allies mention it either. AFAIK the only exception would be Tom Brown's article at Nintendo Wire.

I think it's a good reminder that while people use the word "journalist" for some that write about the games industry it's not really apt. They're mostly an enthusiast press more likely to plagiarize or kiss the big three's butt for continued access than they are to cover something meaningful like this.

Gaming websites depend on the ad revenue from the companies they cover to operate. It's human nature to forget about bad things in the name of hype. They certainly don't have the money or clout to go investigating industrial plants in China.

They should still be making requests for comment and reporting on the lack of responses as a way to turn up the temperature.

I'm going to be sending a few emails soon. In all likelihood, I won't be recognized as a "real" enough journalist to respond to, but there is no harm in trying.

I'll be honest, I had filed this story away with so much else to be upset about in the world, and seeing it pop up again in the feed casts a pretty large shadow over any kind of console excitement. Not naive enough to think I haven't already benefited from their labor as a western consumer, but another reason to not jump in anytime soon. Would love to see collective pressure placed on manufacturers to address this from the press, individual actions or words won't make a dent against that list of powerful companies.

With reviews of the Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 now out, just letting you know not a single review has mentioned the slave labour so far.

Why would they ?
They'd just ruin their relationship with 1st parties. And they'd ruin the hype. Dont you care about the hype ???

And well, we know why this issue doesn't really matter. :)

So while everyone bought and are playing on their new systems, did you all just compartmentalize? While you're celebrating record breaking sales in NPD threads, do you pretend this didn't happen? Did games media just forget this while reviewing the hottest newest games?

Thanks for the bump. It needs to keep being brought up because this is a serious issue. Even if we can't do anything ourselves, awareness is better than nothing.

The games media never forgot. They never acknowledged this from day 1.

I don't think many really cared to begin with. It's like the Ubisoft thing. People were enraged for a bit, but things and news cycles move so fast, it just kind of evaporates in the discourse largely because most of them never cared that much to begin with

Not the put the onus on era per se, but if mods want people to engage they could put an aggressive disclaimer on any thread that involves consoles similar to the one on CP2077. When the thread was stickied it was actually easier to miss. But that would make the forum experience "worse" for people hence it isn't really tenable as it could cause people to leave. But that's how you'd really get eyes on it. Like how a protest in real life blocks traffic

The thread being stickied didn't work because the thread title just isn't clickbait-y enough. It's too long which makes it easy to miss. The CP2077 thread sticky title is powerful with its accusation and I notice it almost every time I'm on the home page. But I agree, the onus is not on Era but on the companies exploiting these practices and turning a blind eye.

I wrote and send emails to Jason, Jim, Jeff, IGN, Gamespot... No a single answer. I did send an email to the company I work for (Cisco) and got an email from corporate saying they have rules to ensure none of their devices were made under those conditions... But that's it.
I wrote to Sony, MS and Nintendo... Not a single answer.
