A barrel containing a body was exposed as the level of Nevada's Lake Mead drops

Police predict that as the water level drops because of drought, more bodies will be found.
A body inside a barrel was found over the weekend on the the newly exposed bottom of Nevada's Lake Mead as drought depletes one of the largest U.S. reservoirs — and officials predicted the discovery could be just the first of more grim finds.

"I would say there is a very good chance as the water level drops that we are going to find additional human remains," Las Vegas police Lt. Ray Spencer told KLAS-TV on Monday.

The lake's level has dropped so much that the uppermost water intake at drought-stricken Lake Mead became visible last week. The reservoir on the Colorado River behind Hoover Dam has become so depleted that Las Vegas is now pumping water from deeper within Lake Mead, which also stretches into Arizona.

Personal items found inside the barrel indicated the person died more than 40 years ago in the 1980s, Spencer said.

He declined to discuss a cause of death and declined to describe the items found, saying the investigation is ongoing.

Police plan to reach out to experts at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to analyze when the barrel started eroding. The Clark County coroner's office will try to determine the person's identity.

Boaters spotted the barrel Sunday afternoon. National Park Service rangers searched an area near the lake's Hemenway Harbor and found the barrel containing skeletal remains.

I feel like any time a lake dries up or they dredge it for a body they usually find several, including a bunch they didn't even know might be there.

Vehicles too right? Seems like when cars are found in bodies of water they turn out to have been there a real long time.

Definitely, and I think there's a story about those every few months. They're usually accidental deaths, though, or at least the last few I remember were. People just driving off the road.

Least shocking news ever.

Hopefully some families out there that can finally be at peace now though.

It's always sad when someone goes over the falls in a barrel and doesn't make it. Even sadder with a place like Lake Mead when there is no waterfall to go over

When you win too much at the tables, your bonus is the Lake Mead barrel tour.

And another one.

National Park Service rangers received a witness report of human skeletal remains discovered at Callville Bay in Lake Mead National Recreation Area around 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Clark County Medical Examiner has been contacted to determine the cause of death.

Detectives believe that victim was killed in the mid-1970s to early 1980s based on the clothing and footwear the victim was found with.

"We believe this is a homicide as a result of a gunshot wound," Lt. Ray Spencer with Las Vegas Metropolitan Police's homicide section said in a press release Tuesday.

This finding comes on the heels of the discovery of a body in a barrel found at Lake Mead on May 1.

It's extremely grim news but I hope at the very least that this will lead to some kind of closure for any relatives of the deceased if the bodies can be identified.

Even better would be to convict anyone responsible.

Brings me back to the Bear Brook murders in the 80's. Terry Rasmussen murdered a family and put them in barrels in Bear Brook state park in Allenstown NH. No one knows how many people he killed

I'm not going to link the article since the Daily Mail is the source but according to Jeff Burbank, and Geoff Schumacher people from The Mob Museum they believe they narrowed down the body to three people and they believe the killer is mobster Tony Spilotro who inspired the character Nicky Santoro from Casino.
