Disclaimer: Fire Emblem is the only srpg I like because the fact that my dpads aren't tilted diagonally makes isometric view annoying.
I feel the same. I'm surprised Nintendo's strategy games are the only ones I've seen use a normal grid, then again I'm not well-versed in the genre so I haven't seen it all.

I'm intrigued by the idea of a SRPG set in the era of guns, rather than the usual swords and sorcery fare.

User banned (1 month): dismissing concerns around sexism/objectification
Looks cool, I'll check it out if it releases on any other platforms. Expect 3/4 of this thread to be people whining about the female characters.

Don't get distracted by the cleavages, this is a game with heavy political thriller angle set in the period of French revolution,

Those designs completely undermine any attempt at a "heavy political thriller" story or whatever. Absolute trash.

I'm totally expecting a sexualized Napoleon in this game though. The question is, if they made him female or not.
Sorry to disappoint, but Napoleon's just a relatively normal looking dude in the game:

I played through this before the English version was out. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but I thought it was fun take on Fire Emblem with some interesting new takes on the formula. There was some really good mission design in there too, particularly in the early and middle parts of the game, though that sadly really fell apart later in the game. The character design was obviously complete garbage and I really can't blame anyone for completely dismissing the game just because of that.

I see that they patched it a bunch and added some new content so I have no idea how the game's like now, but I had a lot of fun with it when I played it.

Of the playable characters I have (around 10 or so), I've only had Paulette (the one posted in 1st page) flat out showing her boobs. And there's no defending her design. The other playable characters though are not that bad.

I can't find more SS online and I can't take manual screenshot atm.

I feel that it's a shame they design some of these characters like that, because the game actually does not really draw your attention to them apart from their portrait itself in the writing. There's no beach or bathhouse scene (or at least I'm aware of), things like that, so the few dumb designs really hurts the otherwise beautiful anime art style and shy away some potential customers.

Do any of these developers actually know how boobs work <_<

I was feeling curious about the artist, so I did some searching...turns out the character designer is a woman and she draws a fair amount of art in the same style (including some NSFW material, so no links). Obviously, that doesn't change how people (including but not limited to other women) should feel about the topic of sexualization or objectification. That is, whether these types of designs are appropriate or not for this particular game. I don't know what she thinks about the subject, yet I wouldn't blame her on a personal level either way.

The designer is totally free to work on whatever she wants and different folks can freely judge whether it suits the context. In the specific case of Banner of the Maid, it seems reasonable to argue that some further consideration and a bit of moderation with certain design choices might have expanded the audience. As it is, I will admit it's sad that there will be less players willing to check out the game due to the decisions made regarding the visual direction and, by extension, the marketing itself.

Been playing it the last few days and it's pretty fun, but calling it a masterpiece is crazy imo. I really like the setting and the battlefield art though, and am super interested to see if they iterate with a sequel.

The frustrating part about some of the dodgy designs is that there's a lot of good ones too. They could have just... Not.

Looks good, thanks for the heads up. Solid reviews on Steam also.

Just beat Fire Emblem a few weeks ago, so I'm down for some more SRPG goodness.

Yeah, women definitely can and will do the same, uh, art style. I feel that they had to follow instructions to appeal to that audience. Then again, I cannot speak for her or the team. Just my personal opinion projecting.

Lots of games I've turned down lately because of that.

It's even better than the likes of Fates Conquest in map design IMO, which is a high bar to beat. It's about on par with Druidstone, another underrated SRPG that came out last year. As far as Fire Emblem-like gameplay goes, I would not put any other titles above it, and I heard NG+ is EVEN better with more creative map designs.

New great SRPG?!

LMAO

I love SRPG so I was super disappointed with this thread.

I did get a laugh though.

Majority of characters design are good, the ones that are terrible especially among the playable characters are very low in number. If you could stomach the likes of Xenoblade 2 or many other anime japanese games, then gameplay is fantastic for SRPG lovers.

There are some bad ones but there are also pretty decent ones.

Every time I hear about this I'm reminded that I should finally crack open my copy of Jeanne d"Arc on PSP.
I'm so excited for you. Knowing that you have that game and haven't played it yet. You're in for a very good time. I beat that game when it came out and I still find myself reminiscing about it to this day. Maybe the last tactic rpg that scratched that Tactic Ogre itch for me.

Only thing really tempting me toward this in spite of the designs is that it's only like 13 bucks right now.

I've tolerated worse in games for double and triple that price before.

I just started laughing when I saw that image.

Christ, it's like one of those terrible "Come hither m'lord and play this game" ads you see here and there.

Every time I see this shit, it makes me think that that the creators of the game aren't confident enough in the actual gameplay and style of the game itself, so they NEED to use these designs to try and entrap people who would otherwise pass by it with the promise of big anime titties.
I think it has a lot less to do with attempting to sell the game than it does just not respecting women.

The game does also feature women with rather gratuitous design but overall I think the art is just gorgeous and there are no pervy scenes or anything. Don't get distracted by the cleavages, this is a game with heavy political thriller angle set in the period of French revolution, and the gameplay is challenging and interesting.

On the contrary, a story that takes itself seriously with female designs this gratuitous makes me ask why they don't just go full hentai or sex comedy instead. Fate/GO and fuck off is another similar offender.
Either go all the way or go home.

Frankly, I think it's because the creators of such games want to reach a potential audience of overlapping sectors. In other words, they don't want to limit their customers exclusively to horny people. They're consciously appealing to them as one priority target and thus running the risk of alienating those who are repulsed by the sexist or creepy elements...but also wish to see their titles remain available for purchase in mainstream online stores or retail outlets, particularly when they believe there's more intrinsic value to be found in their work.

This may sometimes be a silly delusion of theirs, of course, but that's been a commercially sound assumption on occasion. While I haven't studied film history myself, I imagine that's why we saw so many Hollywood studios from previous decades putting a lot of gratuitous nudity or sex scenes even in serious movies. That seems to be less common now, so it's possibly proof that these things can change over time.

I guess Fate/GO would arguably be making a lot less money if it was just providing outright porn. I don't play that game myself, but my impression from watching others stream it is...that a lot of folks still enjoy the writing, lore or characters. Perhaps in ways that might qualify as shallow or superficial (after all, gacha uses a bunch of exploitation mechanics that are rightfully criticized), yet don't bring quite the same stigma that's attached to discussing pornography in public.

I'm already interested since the first reveal in Chinese, but yeah, those designs are totally putting me off. I'm not even whistlisting it.

Real shame about those other designs because these are actually cool. They even gave the character proper armor rather than boob armor.
Not ready to write it off entirely yet. Plus, I'm playing FF12 so really I don't have a footing to stand on.

From checking the screenshots, there are a few okay designs, but the majority of the women in the game were created to appease a very specific kind of customer. It also annoys me how some of them look extremely young and are still somewhat sexualized.

Is it like Fire Emblem? From looking at it on Steam it looks much more like an FFT clone gameplay-wise and I've never been a particular fan of that kind of SRPG gameplay.

It's pretty good. It's class system is very similar to FFT though

Edit: I'm trying this game and chinese voice acting in this clearly set in france game takes some getting used to lol. It also looks about as historical as that Jeanne d'arc SRPG. There's lots of historically famous characters but it seems to diverge from history pretty early.

Also, they have an... intersting ... take on Napoleon compared to what his character is usually described as.
