The new content isn't any good and you have to buy DLC so the art isn't super downgraded:

oh wow, that remake art is super bland, thanks you saved me some money

What's the difference for RD on 3DS.

I have the DS version but I was thinking of getting a digital copy for 3DS. Did it change a couple things for the wrost?
I own the DS version but have never played it, why do you say it's the better version?
While it is a fairly straightforward port, there are quite a few things that make it a weaker game, namely when it comes to aesthetics:

-There's new artwork that is far more generic and unappealing than the original's portraits
-The new voice acting...isn't great, with Stocke's casting in particular sounding jarring given said portrait
-The support system they introduced undermines the complexity of the battle system by essentially giving you free attacks, boosts, etc. instead of figuring out how best to make use of your turns
-The new content doesn't contribute much to the overall story; they try to integrate the "third timeline" but the new additions stick out
-There is a lot of DLC, including microtransactions that get rid of the grind

I do want to make it clear that Radiant Historia is a great game, one of the best, most interesting and well executed JRPGs to come out in the past two decades along with The World Ends With You and that the 3DS remake is not some abomination, it's just disappointing. The positives i'll grant is that this version of the game provides a few QoL additions like more save files and difficulty options so it might be a good idea to go with that if you're only interested in the story, and it is significantly cheaper than the DS version, significantly so if you're going for a complete copy. If it's your only option then it's fine but far from ideal.

SMTIV and Etrian Odyssey are masterpieces in the respective genres and are very cheap, start with those.
Then Apocalypse, all the other EO games (EOV = EO2U > EOU) and Radiant Historia/Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey Redux.
Boy, you really can't go wrong with any of these, but the first two that I mentioned are really a must if you like rpgs, possibly the second Atlus peak after the PS2 era

I think it's hard to go too wrong with any of these, but my personal favourite is still Devil Survivor Overclocked. And if you end up liking that, DS2: Record Breaker is also fantastic.

The only reason I would guess Soul Hackers isn't getting mentioned as much is because it hasn't been played as much. It's every bit as good as the others except it's in a smaller more palatable chunk.

Is there a way to get notified when there are 3DS EU sales. I just checked the EU eShop due to this thread, but only Q2 is on sale...

I'm planning to get Apocalypse and Radiant Historia. But I'm not in a hurry, so can wait for an eventual sale.

I want to say that none of these are really bad choices. I think EO series makes the best use of the 3DS's split screen system and it will convert less well into other single screen formats should we see a remaster/port. However they are also not a typical RPG. They are dungeony with CYO team and work out the quirks of the enemies combat. Only the Untold games offer a story and set characters which is slightly different take to the game.
I would give the demo a shot to be honest. It isn't for everyone and the artwork is a bit hit or miss at best but the gameplay really nice if you get into it. Not much else holds up like it to be honest.

I love Radiant Historia, it's one of my favorite games ever but i didn't sit well with the 3ds port. Like, the new designs are kinda meh, didn't compared but some people said you get less money from enemies to force dlc purchasing, and the extras are either bloaty or weeb stuff, including a bath scene with a 10yo girl. Get the original on DS if possible.

Both Devil Survivor games would be my pick, they're easily the best SRPGs out there imo.

Nor have I touched Etrian Odyssey. I understand they're complex dungeon crawlers -- and no, I have no idea if I'll enjoy those either!
Good news on that front: almost all the Etrian games on the 3DS shop have demos which are basically the first big chunk of the game. You can save your progress and it transfers over to the full version! Give em a try, especially if you're into older-school games from a time where it wasn't uncommon for players to have to sketch out maps for themselves on a sheet of graph paper.

I also highly recommend Strange Journey. The perfect fusion of SMT and Etrian, with a mountain of QoL changes over the DS original.

You can't really go wrong with that list, I've played around 10 of those, Atlus portable games made up a huge chunk of my gaming time over the last decade.

If you're already picking up RH, I'd grab an SMT and an EO game.

SMTIV (and if you enjoy it pick up IV:A after)

EO IV is probably the more rounded EO title there, the overworld design with hot air balloon exploration and mini-dungeons is a nice break between dungeon crawls. EOV is simpler and more streamlined in party options and just raw dungeon crawls, so is also a good jumping on point if you want the most accessible one. EO Nexus has an insane amount of content, It's double the length of the others. It's a very iterative series, if you like one you'll probably like them all.

Strange Journey, which plays like an SMT/EO mashup, is also a must-play.I don't think I could really narrow it down further but if were to pick two, I'd go SMTIV and EOIV.

Man, Atlus put out a lot of good games on DS/3DS.

Shin Megami Tensei IV

And if you like it, give a try to the sequel Apocalypse

This game is amazing, my favorite game in the 3DS

Devil Survivor is one of the best handheld games ever. Radiant Historia, Etrian Odyssey 4 and Strange Journey are also good.

I could never get into SMT IV.

Soul Hackers and Devil Survivor 1 are both great games with really good stories and fine characters. Apocalypse has much better balanced fights and is really fun to play and it's soundtrack is fire, if you can stomach the sometimes cringey writing. I liked it better than 4 proper despite that.

SMT IV duology, EOIV, Radiant Historia and Strange Journey are all excellent.
Soul Hackers isn't as good but it's secretly my favorite!
Devil Survivor is also good stuff, never played #2, though, might bite if there's a sale here in PAL land.

Shin Megami Tensei IV and Devil Survivor Overclocked.

So to speak, I am not far in DeSu but I think you might like it. The game is so relevant to whats happening in 2020.

SMT IV is newcomer friendly for mainline.

Strange Journey was the first SMT game that clicked with me and got me interested in the rest of the series. Its got a wonderfully fast pace to gameplay and the atypical scenario make it an easy recommendation from me.

It can be tough in places but, aside from the final boss in a couple of the original routes, the game gives you enough options to puzzle out those difficult encounters.

Personally I'd advise :
Radiant Historia : great story, great combat, likeable cast of characets, an all-around great package. The Perfect Chronology content is well done and doesn't feel tacked-on or as an afterthought and actually enhances the base game.

Shin Megami Tensei IV : one of my favourite JRPGs ever *smirk*

Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse : If you liked SMT IV, it's SMT IV but more and enhanced. It's better gameplay wise, I liked the story, there are similarities with SMT IV but enough differences to feel like a fresh new experience. Do not listen to people saying it's way too anime and it ruined SMT. People thinking SMT isn't anime are deluding themselves anyway *smirk* *mudo*

I didn't play Devil Survivor Overclocked but I read positive reviews all around.

This depends on whether you're primarily looking for a good story or great gameplay.

For the former, pick Devil Survivor: Overclocked. It has a well-paced story along with really good dialogue with nuanced ideologies (which each lead to different paths).

For the latter, though, pick Devil Survivor: Overclocked. It has a huge advantage being a strategy RPG. Almost every fight is pre-designed, meaningful and significant--not just another random encounter. The battle system is carefully balanced, like most SMT games, and the difficulty, while high, is fair. I found I'd lose the first time I played an encounter a lot, and almost always win the second time. In other words, each fight taught me something, without getting obnoxiously hard.

Alright! Thanks for your help, everyone. I decided on Radiant Historia/Devil Survivor 1/Etrian Odyssey IV. Add in the fact that I found out my roommate has a copy of SMT IV and that's four total games I snagged. :)

I just missed this sale last time as my 3DS was in storage, but I put it back in circulation after wanting to finally get around to SMTIV:A after beating TMS, and I couldn't be happier about having my 3DS now loaded with Atlus RPGs for basically the price of one new retail console game.

I've already beaten EOIV, EO Untold, SMTIV, Soul Hackers and Radiant Historia, am currently playing SMTIV:A and this sale have purchased:

EOV
EO Nexus
Devil Survivor 1&2
Strange Journey
Persona Q2

One game I'm curious about is I've noticed that 7th Dragon is on sale. As far as I know it may appeal to fans of EO? Does anyone recommend it? And is EO Untold 2 any good?

7th Dragon III is a sequel to 2020 and 2020-2, which didn't get English releases. If I remember correctly, the story isn't too dependent on previous events, but some parts of the story won't be as significant without some prior knowledge. In terms of the game itself, it's quite similar to EO in terms of the class/skill point system, but with a 3 man party and no front/back row. It's not a first person dungeon crawler though, more of a standard JRPG where you control a character in 3d and run around on a map. The soundtrack is also by Yuzo Koshiro, so it's just as good as EO's IMO.

RE: Untold 2, I would personally rank it above EOV and EONexus. It has a story mode and classic mode, more playable classes than EOV, and isn't excessively long like EONexus. I'm also biased though, since EO2 was my favourite DS EO.

Great, thank you! I may toss EOU2 onto the pile and possibly wait on 7th Dragon as I've already spent entirely too much.

I think the games are published by a different publisher in the EU territories. Many of these games were on sale not too long ago for absolutely ridiculous prices (like 80% off). I guess that doesn't answer your question, as I don't know, but the EU sales tend to be at different times from when the sega published games go on sale like in NA.

I believe that Atlus games, or at least some of them, are published by Deep Silver.

But... I managed to find a site that tracks 3DS deals for EU: psprices.com

Radiant Historia is one of the best RPGs of the past decade. It's seriously amazing.

Also Thor 2: The Dark World is pretty good. You should check that out too.

But other than those you might want to look into Persona Q/Q2 and SMT4 Apocalypse.

I sort of have two answers for this.

1. SMTIV and Soul Hackers
2. SMTIV and SMTIV Apocalypse

Apocalypse is kind of a sequel to IV. If you go with the former, it should be with the assumption you would play Apocalypse after you finish IV. Soul Hackers is an excellent game.

Otherwise if you're counting Apocalypse as one of the games, make sure you finish IV first.

Shin Megami Tensei IV and IV: Apocalypse, IV:A being a sequel to an interrupted version of IV's Neutral route.

I'd be more willing to recommend Soul Hackers if not for the fact that actually playing it is my least favorite thing about it in spite of liking so much else.

My eyes completely glossed over Soul Hackers being on the list.

Yeah, go for that and Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse.

Ok guys, I'm in a similar situation as the OP cept you've already sold me on smt iv. But I do have a second slot, I'd be open to a dungeon crawler, but I'm wondering as one of the few modern Atlus games I've played and enjoyed if any of them have an asthetic closer to TMS#FEE? I've heard that's closer to persona? So maybe persona q? Also limit it to on sale stuff(radiant Historia is no longer on sale)
