I just asked my 8 year old daughter who cares nothing about superheroes to name a superhero.

Superman isn't going anywhere.

If someone said that DC's big three were Batman, Harley Quinn, and the Joker I wouldn't argue with them.

Harley is 3 decades old since she was created in the Batman Animated Series. 30 years is a LONG time, most video game icons arent even that old

Yes, correct. And almost no video game characters except Mario and Sonic are legends on par with Batman, Superman and Spider-Man.

Harley is not high enough on the list yet.

I think it's more a question of when can DC make another superhero that thrives as much as Batman lol. Cause like it's a fight for distant second place in terms starpower.

Which is why they need to introduce live-action Creeper.

Eh, there's no reason to at least have all the main ones at the start. His powerset is not very complicated.

It would be terrible game design to make him start very powerful. Even games like KH and God of War make the characters lose their powers in the beginning of each new installment.

I mean, this goes back to the ¨who was there first?¨ arguments and I do believe Wonder Woman benefited from that as well as being one of the first female hero characters (same way Lara Croft and Chun Li benefited from being the firsts of their genres).

But we live in an age where everything spreads fast thanks to social media. So the fact that Harley Quinn has had like 3 major movies, her own animated series, Batman crossovers, game appearances, and was there at the start of Batman TAS is plenty reason to think she is a pretty huge DC character.

I wouldnt call her a hero myself though since she is a villain turned anti-hero. But unfortunately she has always been popular just because of her ¨sexy clown girl¨appearance and caught on fast simply because of that. Though no matter how much they build her up and use her she will always be just another huge Batman character and there are tons of them already.

Superman is not even close on the level of other big superheroes but hes still bigger than the ones in the poll. Harley Quinn is definitely a bigger deal than him and its not really close
I feel like she's getting a bigger push right now, but it might be more about DC believing she has potential. Just look at the box office of her last two movies. If Superman had done that badly twice everyone would have screamed he was dead.

Superman's iconic to the point of being part of the language. You can't really lose that sort of status just because your movies aren't great.

If Batman and Wonder Woman can make money on their own, there is definitely a problem if Superman cant when he use to be of equal importance as Batman back in the day. If they have other heroes, like say Aquaman, who are more popular they are going to want to do more with them than Superman.

What we have been seeing is DC trying to make more than just Batman big over the last decade. And there have been things like Green Lantern that greatly damaged the character and interest from DC doing much them, while other efforts (WW, Aquman, Shazam) went well and those heroes are rising in prominence. Superman is just the toughest one to crack because he is well known but the masses just cant care about him in a way that makes him viable in the hero film market

Yeah because GOW and Kingdom Hearts give alot of completely different tools that you pick up throughout the game.

Superman doesn't work like that. He's super fast, super strong, hard to hurt, can see through walls, has super hearing, fly, shoot lasers out of his eyes and breathe out so heard it can freeze stuff. That's it. That's not even enough to spread out throughout a game.

Feel like the other stuff are fine if you didn't have to account for flying
This is undeniably false.
You have some cosplay and suddenly you supplant the archtype for your genre and the longest running comic

Might as well ask when Disney's going to retire Mickey Mouse. There hasn't been a worthwhile Superman film in decades and he's still the dictionary definition of a superhero.

Dude Man Of Steel starring an actor no one even knew made over $600m world wide in 2013. Harley's big movie after being everyone's Halloween costume and breaking out in SS barely made $200m.

And Man of steel was considered failure because it only made 600m
I feel like people are overestimating how popular Quinn is

She's popular but not that popular

The Harley Quinn fanaticism on this forum is so fucking weird. We've had multiple threads where people try to argue she's more popular than the Joker. Like what

Man of Steel had Christopher Nolan´s name attached to it after he made the beloved Dark Knight Trilogy. The Suicide Squad released during the pandemic, had a wonky title not signaling it was a sequel, and was made available day one on HBO Max.

They're talking about Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

God that name was so bad

Birds of Prey was another poorly titled film lol. Beyond that, it was just terrible and felt all over the place.

I mean if it was just called Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey it would have been more successful out the gate

It feels like a lot of people in this thread are overly fixated on Movies, TV shows, AAA Games, etc. as the markers of popularity and success, (where obviously WB has fallen short with Superman in recent years) rather than the obvious real marker of success which is merchandising. Superman is one of (and arguably just is) the most iconic and recognizable fictional characters in modern human history. Can you even imagine how many Superman t-shirts, Superman posters, Superman towels, Superman underwear, tooth brushes, tooth paste, lunch boxes, backpacks etc. etc. etc. are sold every year. Like Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse, Superman's iconicity makes him, over time, a virtually infinite revenue stream because he's completely and irrevocably ingrained in global human culture.

Just because WB for whatever reason had the dude who directed 300 and Watchmen and who, by his own admission, doesn't even like Superman make a bad couple of Superman movies, doesn't really put a dent in Superman's cultural status and long-term profitability as an IP.

So with all the tech advancements, whats stopping them? There is a reason we have Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman games coming, DC thinks people will actually care given that their films have made them money.

Let's start with the fact that Superman in combat is basically the most boring mode of Superman. Superman's a great character, but when you apply the generic Cape Comics template to a Superman comic you're probably going to get a dull mess. Superman operates best in different modes, and this impacts the games greatly because, by and large, AAA video games are all designed in roughly that Capes Comic template and focused on combat. The best Superman comic is All Star Superman, and while that does have some combat in it, it's rare, and when it happens it's usually of the sort like, threat appears, Superman takes it down with a single shot, and the story moves on.

You could absolutely make a great Superman game, so long as you're not looking to make a big-budget action game. You could make a fantastic visual novel around Superman. But in the AAA action game space you're losing so many of the best elements of the character to try to force them into that, and that's guaranteed to be the only model that WB Games is going to be thinking in for any of their DC games.

(Also, while it's on my brain: Even if the game was not good, the single best idea anyone's ever had for an action-y Superman game was Superman Returns featuring an basically invulnerable Superman but you instead had a health bar representing Metropolis' health instead.)

Christopher Nolan had little to do with how much Man of Steel made. It had been 7 years since Superman Returns and it was a brand new Superman movie that had fantastic trailers it was just dragged down by Zack Snyder's poor story telling.

I guess a character just isn't really worth a lot if they don't have live-action movie adaptation blockbuster doing a billion on box office RIGHT NOW.

The Superman tv show is some of the best Superman I've ever seen. I don't think he's going anywhere.
