I mean I get the relaxing nature its intended to be but the sudden surge in the people making them and what it has turned into... yeah its creepy and weird. Its hard to not see ASMR as just young attractive women whispering/weird gross mouth sounds into a mic when that honestly what 90% of the most viewed videos and channels are.

I listen to mechanical keyboard ASMR stuff at work with my headphones.

Yeah lol. ASMR can be very normal it's just people are exploiting one aspect of it for a totally different reason. I use white noise, brown noise, pink noise, fan sounds, rainstorms, and sometimes airplane noises personally.

I get it to some extent. There have been some movies and shows that give me the feeling I've heard ASMR is supposed to give you. However I'm just convinced that most people watching those Youtube videos use it for softcore porn. Especially anything with gross ass whisphering in it.

This is the kind of shit that gives me that feeling.

Honestly if all asmr is a sex thing then all cooking and exercise videos are too. That said the eating large amounts of food videos are definitely a fetish thing there's really no other explanation for why they are popular.

Amouranth out of all people? Seriously?

ASMR legit helps me sleep though. Without it I'm kinda restless through the night. I prefer quiet sounds though rather than someone whispering in my ear.

Just like with anything, there are many genres, and sub genres. People do many different things with it. I don't get the tingles some people do, and it's not a sex thing with me, but I find it relaxing, and it does help me go to sleep very quickly, or chill when I'm working on a project.

You guys don't know shit, ASMR is the best sleep aid you'll apparently never benefit from, but it's a double edged response.

I've done horribly in classes because how the FUCK am I supposed to stay awake during the constant drone of a lecture with the white noise of an air conditioner and soft rustling noises from classmates.

Personally, I don't get it. If I'm stressed, I listen to music. People eating, whispering or making random sounds is just unsettling to me.

Apple has some pretty incredible ASMR videos. The woodshop sounds one can actually put me to sleep, and thanks to synesthesia they're a visual trip as much as they are an audio one.

This is probably my current favorite ASMR video, the most recent video from my favorite ASMR artist.

I think it's pretty important to have a decent set of over-the-ear headphones, but any headphones/earbuds work of course. And it's also pretty important to watch the video as well as listen to the sounds as that's typically what induces the sensory phenomenon. Listening alone is also relaxing too, but it typically works best when you are watching.

ASMR is an actual great feeling, tingling sensation, and it honestly must suck to not be able to experience it.

Seems that the simple answer is that it's a real thing (I get it when people with long nails are scratching stuff) but it was taken by a bunch of jokesters and grifters in the porn world and otherwise. So all that nonsense isn't actually ASMR, it's just a way for people to try making money off of it.

Effectively.

ASMR is a completely real thing. There's something relaxing about certain sounds. Some sounds come off weirder than others (scratching vs. chewing in your ears for example). But yeah, someone found out that you could reach more people if you got oddly sexual with it. There are a good chunk of ASMR videos that are stuff like try on hauls for lingerie, and ASMR YouTubers who have a porn side hustle (or pornstars who have an ASMR side hustle). While those might be interesting to watch for OTHER reasons I don't think those are really for ASMR.

That Zoe Kravitz commercial made me very uncomfortable.

Does restaurant background noise count as ASMR? Clinking glasses and cutlery and muted idle chatter? That I can get behind.

It's crazy to think this was the video on YouTube that started it all:

And it's still better than most of the garbage put out recently. They actually move around your "head" and it tricks your ears into thinking he is actually doing stuff to you. Your ears try to locate where the sound is coming from. So you can "feel" his breath on your ear.

Those glove sounds are absolute nightmare fuel for me. It's almost up there with wet mouth sounds. It's weird how discomforting and aurally violating some ASMR can be to me. It makes me feel like something is trying to crawl into my ears.

I've wondered the same thing actually. This was one of the first videos to get me into ASMR and barely anything can match the audio quality and dynamics at play. Most videos seem so flat in comparison. Is it simply mic quality and production space not being as good? I'd say one of the few channels that gets to this level of production is Heather Feather, which thankfully, has returned after a 2 year hiatus.

I can tell you right now it has nothing to do with the quality of the sound and more to do with the illusion of 3D space. The video is old as heck too hehe.

In the barbershop video I posted they make use of 3D space by moving around you. In most asmr videos what do you see? Someone simply sitting in front of a camera moving their hands wildly in an attempt to stimulate you with a barrage of auditory cues. But they aren't moving. They call it "personal attention" or something similar. But it is more visual stimulation rather than audio (which is supposed to be the main point) This does not work as well. The ears locate objects in space by arrival times (of sound) to EACH EAR. If you cup your hands over both ears of the viewer for example, your ears assume there is no difference in distance between each ear from the object making sound. The ears have to be able to tell you how close a sound is relative to the right or left one. Making stupid sounds in both ears at the same time lessens the experience.

The barber shop guys literally say this in the original video while walking in circles around you. I can almost "see" him how powerful the performance is. It seems today's youth have decided to take a different route than the original "blueprint" for 3dasmr (binaural) audio. And it is a damn shame so few get this right.

it's always the people that don't experience the feeling that try to make it into something it's not, it's kind of sad really but i get it y'all feel left out.

ASMR was cool before it was taken over by the usual crowd of hacks just trying to make a quick buck. Takes way too much effort to find good content now.
