ASMR is something a bit different now a days than what it is supposed to be lol. It could be sounds, noises, or anything to stimulate the senses. Just like how some people find mechanical keyboards statisfying, ASMR is basically just all sounds of various kinds to achieve that sort of satisfaction for each person which is known as the autonomous sensory meridian response . Everyones going to like something different so there is a lot of types. But then eventually, it just turned into people roleplaying in whispers into a microphone lol. That is still ASMR for some people, but its just a part of it. It's also something totally different for some people and that's another reason why it's watched too.

ASMR can be everything, you can't judge it on these roleplay videos or live streams.

I get tingles from good music or epic movie scenes.

It's a physiological response to certain stimuli that usually manifests in a tingling sensation in the back of the neck and scalp. The stimuli is most often hearing someone speaking in soft tones or whispers, hearing light tapping/scratching or watching someone perform mundane tasks. Only some people react to the stimuli in a physiological way though. It's a genetic predisposition. Kinda like the whole cilantro tasting like soap thing.

Yep, while ASMR can be sexual (and some great ASMR is) it doesn't have to be. It's an actual physiological response in those who respond to it (like me), and it's wonderfully relaxing.

ASMR isn't weird, or at least no weirder than anything else. It just makes people uncomfortable because it has an intimate vibe.

Era can be so judgey sometimes.

Just because you don't understand it or don't like it doesn't mean that it's weird or that people who enjoy it are weird.

I guess that's why all the popular ASMR channels on Twitch aren't attractive young women.

oh wait

To be clear, ASMR is a real thing. I remember watching my friend play King's Quest while quietly narrating his thoughts when I was a kid, and feeling chills throughout my body for no perceptible reason. And that was one example of countless before I learned ASMR was a thing.

Naturally, the internet has co-opted, fucked up, and commodified it in the way it does with everything. But it is a thing regardless of sexiness.

Sure.

...but if you only watch attractive people on Twitch do it, you're not into it because of the "physiological response." Not the one in your brain, at least.

i know you might not be responding to me, but just to expand on my thoughts: why is something being a sex thing bad? i understand and feel what you guys are talking about, and it's pretty much a sex thing. closeness, immediacy, intimacy.. why do people who consume this stuff scoff so hard at the idea that it's related to sex in their brain?

I used to get it as a kid sitting on my grandmother's lap while she would read to me in a soothing voice, pointing out stuff in the book with slow hand movements. To this day, I still get ASMR when I smell particularly strong women's perfume, which I attribute to those times as a kid, because my grandmother always wore strong perfume.

To me, it is more closely associated with family intimacy, like in the grandmother example above. It's, like, the farthest thing from sex to me.

Like half of the ASMR that exists is just thinly veiled erotica. The other half is just satisfying noises for specific kinds of people. Which is totally fine. Hell I really love those videos of the sound of rain. The first half is fine too, I just wish people would just admit it's really just porn.

I get it from cooking videos a lot of the time. Watching "Great Chefs of America" when I was a kid sometimes put me in a trance. That or old men talking about a craft or topic they know very well. Old raspy voices do it a lot too.

I wasn't responding to you I was just responding to the tone of the thread in general. And I think the problem is that people are trying to paint all ASMR as being sexual in nature and the people who enjoy it as being "weird". But in reality only some of it is sexual in nature. I don't personally partake in ASMR but I know that if I did I would not want to be lumped in with a crowd on twitch. not that there is anything particularly wrong with what those people are doing on twitch. For me it would be more the stigma that goes with twitch in general rather than the ASMR portion of it.

I see it being similar to how anime fans get upset when people try to paint the entirety of anime as being scantily clad women with exaggerated proportions and therefore the people who enjoy it are weird. When in reality it's only a portion of it that is like that. Don't get me wrong I get that it is a very large portion but people generally get upset when people try to paint something they enjoy with a broad brush.

Because it isn't and you're talking out of your ass.

Hope that clears it up for you.

As a woman who loves ASMR I'm sure I'm the creep and not all the people in this thread who sexualize everything and apparently can't even hear a woman whispering without getting a boner.

ASMR is pretty great, at least, well done ASMR is.

The way I described it to my dad is, it's essentially foley for relaxation purposes. It is a combination of both visual and aural stimulation that gives an almost 'raising hair on the back of your neck' feeling.

Well done ASMR can put me to sleep more effectively than just about anything else. Haters are just judgmental people who are ignorant.

Nobody is a creep in this situation except for maybe the people in twitch chat who take it too far. That's the issue. Some people are trying to paint other people as being creepy or weird when in reality it's just different preferences on what people find attractive or arousing.

Everybody has their own kinks and fetishes. There is nothing wrong with that. What IS wrong is when people try to shame others for their kinks and fetishes just because they do not understand them or agree with them. (There are obviously exceptions to this though)

You can't have a thread about ASMR and not have this

I only get the tingles sometimes when a real clean fucking hook happens in music, and sometimes when I'm getting my hair buzzed.

A lot of ASMR is weird and cringey and just not very good because people's audio sucks and they don't really know what they're doing and just make random noises. Some of it's really great and relaxing though. It's so big now that it can be hard to find the good artists. Amouranth is pure cringe for me and the quality of her content has always been super poor.

Unintentional ASMR is where it's at for me

YES. Praise Lord Steven Christ. I legit love his concave earth stuff, it's bananas in reality but it's a cool ass fictional concept. And makes for great sleepy time listening.

I've found myself gravitating towards unintentional ASMR videos lately. There's something about adding more production value and artifice that diminishes the effect for me.

Era thinking ASMR is weird/gross when all they know about it is whispering and eating sounds. Shocker.

There are tons of different kinds of ASMR, personally I'm more into sounds involving different materials used in a creative way. If that's not your thing fine, but the ignorance on display here is really fucking annoying.

Are people who use ocean sounds or the rainforest to fall asleep creepy as well? I'm not really into ASMR, but I can see why it appeals to people. It definitely can get weird though.
