White privilege is white privilege. The fact that this is in Belgium and reported in a non English language is likely why this isn't blowing up.

Asians who hate Andrew yang will always get a side eye from me.

Regardless of what you think about his policy or his supporters he's always respectful and try to back up his claims with numbers. You may think he's naive in his way of thinking but the hate he garners from a lot of people are insane especially this forum. Really reaffirms my thoughts on "white liberals" and their wannabes.

Not sure how his policies are anymore harmful than a typical dem. Why? Cause his policies wasn't means regulate and full of identity politics?

He made ubi and the future problems of automation a national discussion. Thats more than most of these democratic candidates accomplished.

The bar is underground

I'm going to assume this means the bar for a typical dem is so low that its underground, so its easy for Yang to pass. (Which honestly I don't think much of the typical Dem either)

While I disagree with how you view his policy, its seems we agree he shouldn't receive any extra hated compared to the typical Dem.

Personally, I think UBI would be great and the current situation with COVID-19 is the perfect case of why we need UBI. All these people that can't work now because of confinement or their workplace closing down now have that safety net that currently welfare don't provide (Since many of them don't normally get welfare) and help them stay above water during these tough times.

As a UBI supporter myself, I like that his campaign set the stage for other politicians to talk about UBI now in response to things like COVID-19 without having to constantly explain what it is or how it works, but more relevantly to this thread, I very much appreciated that for once, a national politician was able to speak about Asian-American issues specifically and was willing to go on what little Asian-American media exists.
Normally we are either ignored because there are so few of us, we get lumped in inaccurately with other minorities depending on how it's convenient, or we get treated as de facto white due to weird class reductionism. And of course it's impossible to overstate the importance of a visibly Asian man just being up there on the national stage in debates and such. I don't recall Bobby Jindal ever qualifying for the debates last time around, and I'm sure most people here hate him anyway.

So ummm... I just learned that there's a term called "Jungle Asians" for Asians living in SEA. WTF? I mean, to me, jungle sounds nice, but somehow, there's probably a much more sinister and racist meaning behind it.

That's me! The exclamation mark isn't excitement btw. But yeah that's been something to describe South East Asians for a while now. It's.... It's not good lol.

I always heard the term used in context of non-East Asians, by weebs and racist Asians. But have also heard it in classist ways amongst Filipinos. Like calling someone from a rural part of the Philippines a jungle Asian then asking them to shake a mango off a tree. I get very dark in the summer and members of my family in Korea have called me that.

I've seen it kinda as a term of endearment among SE Asian Americans, different cultures finding commonality. Probably not right for others to label us as that though lol

Ali Wong popularized the term in her first Netflix special when she described her heritage as half "fancy Asian" (East Asian countries that have hosted the Olympics) and half "jungle Asian" (SE Asian countries that tend to be poorer in comparison).

No, I mean I don't even understand where those terms came from or what they mean.

Surprised you hadn't heard of it yet. Yeah, the "jungle Asian"/"fancy Asian" distinction has been around for a while, and it's racist and classist as shit.

Though as Dreezy said, I've seen some SEAs reclaim it in a sort of "badass jungle warriors" kind of way, which hey, more power to them!

I only heard about this term around 2020... I had a feeling it was racist, but I wasn't sure about the context.

To be honest, I didn't know about those terms until 3 years ago when I saw a YT video pop up in my feed and watched it. Despite not knowing those terms were a thing, I've was felt this was a thing despite not being around other Asian ethnic groups.

Best way I could describe it is that I could naturally feel it through our media and representation(in the US anyways) despite not having much if any experience with it first hand.

Almost all of you guys have abandoned this thread for Discord 😭

I checked out Discord and found that I hate using Discord.

Can't you guys have your discussions here?

Aren't we scheduled for a meeting with the mod team next month?

The way things are right now with the state of things that have devolved even further for Asians out in the world and reflecting back into Era as well, a meeting needs to be fast tracked. But I don't know what's going on behind the scenes myself. I also have been too busy to hit up the discord too much, but unless things change drastically over here, I don't see why we'd really wanna jump back in.

Mods can't seem to help other marginalized groups on this forum, so I'm very doubtful they'll be of much help to Asians here.

Yeah, on second thought I think I agree with you, but since many, if not most of us are already out or at least not posting I don't know that I wouldn't mind mods trying something different in an attempt to improve anyway, regardless, unless that somehow makes things even worse

Yeah I agree, I find it really hard to read the backlog on discord compared to here. But there are so many threads I actively avoid here right now. Sometimes I go in curious and then regret bothering. It's not good.

I feel like there might be a middle path or something, like a whole different forum or our own private subreddit, where it's still a little more like a forum in organization, but not here. I'm already on reddit, so that'd be doable for me, but I don't know if enough other people would bother joining yet another new thing, there or anywhere, at this point.

They won't try anything different. Look at the results from their other conversations so far. What's changed?

This is a forum for weebs. Weebs are inherently racist. The fucking weebs in this forum haven't really shown they can actually confront their own racism.

We are definitely going to have a meeting with Asian Era, hopefully soon. I'd like to say mid-May but as we all know covid has thrown a lot of our schedules off. However I think we can use this time to try and organise and prep for it.

There are a few ideas on how to approach this in terms of procedure. Since I can see already that some members prefer not to use discord the first option is to have a dedicated thread for our members. This can be viewed openly or invites/participants & staff only. Another option is to have the meeting a new discord specifically for the meeting.

Also, I think it would be great if we can try to summarise some of our concerns to that we can get an agenda list for the staff to address and discuss in detail on the day. Please let us know here or PM me details. Any member with concerns of privacy but wants to give their input is welcome to PM me as well.

Damn that sucks. This is also the worse time to come down with such an illness.

Who know making this thread and the OP almost three years ago would still be frightening relevant in 2020, perhaps even moreso than before.

Vietnam 40 years on: how a communist victory gave way to capitalist corruption

The long read: After the military victory, Vietnam’s socialist model began to collapse. Cut off by US-led trade embargos and denied reconstruction aid, it plunged into poverty. Now its economy is booming – but so is inequality and corruption

I wanted to share this article, which is a bit of a depressing read, but was very interesting to me.

Also, who thinks the current situation will turn bad for Asians? What I mean is that a lot of Asian businesses are hurt, and turn Asians into supporting shitheads like Trump while other minorities see Asians as just as bad. Then Asians once again have no allies.
