Yeah this morning I came pretty close to being done with ResetEra. Every thread with China in the name basically descends into "Fuck China." Granted, some of this isn't limited to ResetEra and is the same across the wider internet, but there's no room for any sort of discussion on topics pertaining to China. You're just a CCP apologist if your opinion differs from the mob, leaving no room for nuanced debate. "China sucks" and "The CCP is evil" is kind of a strawman that's used to justify everything negative about China.
It's just gross that all these purported liberals who hate racism and discrimination come out and spread the same sort of xenophobia that Trump spouts when amplifying anything negative about China, without stopping and thinking about it critically first.

They aren't actually liberal. At least, that's my hope, as if they actually are, then the caricature of the out-of-touch, bleeding heart "lib" would be true.
I think a good chunk of the users here are really just kids who want to prove they're smarter than everyone else and/or want validation for their life choices. That's why we get so many stupid ass posts about shit like there being no ethical consumption under capitalism or how no one should ever drive a car for any reason or how income/housing inequality is easy to fix if we just xyz. And it's also why we have so many people who will take zero personal responsibility for their failings and blame the system.
But seen through that lens, I have a lot of fun here by being less serious most of the time.

Given that Cerium, the owner of Resetera, is an Asian American, it's really disappointing how much racist and diet racist anti-Asian shit pops up here.
But, in all fairness, I must point out that, so far, my track record of having mods take action against posts that I report is 100% - whereas at the old place it remains at 0%.

Spot on with this thought. It's also why I don't take any opinion here seriously until I've heard enough from them to know that the next thread they post isn't going to be something like "my dog ate my homework and here is why late stage capitalism is at fault."

Well, idiots or malcontents or tryhards exist across the entire political spectrum and whatever other classifications for groupings of people. I am not that surprised.
While sinophobia rises there's also going to be a second idiot group of tankies talking up the same regime and people (both groups may also consider themselves extreme left/woke and probably are white lol). Gonna be an interesting time of extremes.
Putting that aside, so who here is likely to house their aging parents as per filial responsibility? haha Since I'm eldest, I assume it would be me, though is it technically it should be my currently unwed brother who would be eldest son?
I'm currently trying to figure out how to renovate my house to futureproof it so they have one floor access to everything they need when their mobility is shot. My mom actually suggested first that it was for ME when I got old that I should include a main floor walk-in shower but.. I think the implication is it would be for her and dad lol.
My parents used to house my paternal grandpa for a while until he actually broke a hip by tripping over something (rug?). That put him through a hospital stay where in his delerium he fell at some point again and pretty much ended his life. We then a decade later housed paternal grandma but her health problems were all over the place and had her in and out of hospitals until it finally all caught up with her. Both times, our housing situation wasn't the best for either healthwise (stairs, house probably breaking/drafty/damp), but they didn't have much choice as they were passed around/rejected by the rest of the huge family (either from bad blood or just people who didn't want to deal with them despite having much better resources).
Sad and difficult all around, but I want to be able to at least house mine without that same problems of having a bad environment!
Anyone else currently dealing with this or planning to?

You're way more optimistic of what most liberals are than I am.
While this forum is definitely almost a caricature of what liberals are, it's not as extreme as you might think.
Which kind of make choosing a political party as an Asian American very difficult. Its like getting punched vs getting shot. I rather get punched but neither are good.
Having elderly parents to take of in the future does scare me a bit. It was one of my concerns when I moved away (still the same continent) but we're a lot closer to my wife's parents so it was always going to be a balance. I have one brother who has stayed close to them so I'm not too worried. It's possible that he'll move into the old family home and renovate it to add a suite for my parents.
Care homes are an option too but some may have trouble adapting, plus there can be a language barrier to consider. My late grandfather was initially in a Western care home but wasn't happy so my dad moved him to one in Chinatown even if it was farther away from us.
For sure, the hardline "pragmatists" are even more insufferable (to the point that I just skip over their posts often), but I think they're also a subset of smarter-than-thou.
I do think that most of the posters here don't fall into that group. It's just that there are a lot who do, and they tend to post a lot.

My own experience as an Asian is that we're often sidelined when it comes to discussion about racism. We just cease to exist unless we're a helpful model minonrity to bash others with.

Meph and I assume we will take full responsibility of his parents (oldest son), my parents (oldest daughter because younger brother has CP), and younger brother (because he has CP). Japanese cigarettes are much lighter from what I remember, I don't smoke often but when I did in Japan I noticed their regular cigarettes were really easy to take compared to the regular western one, that might be a factor in why they can smoke so much.
