Both seemed to get a huge jump in the mid to late 80's/early 90's, the skill required to be really good at it is pretty high compared to other games/sports, tournaments get held in weird locales like some guy's empty pool or some guy's bathroom, there's an insane amount of terminology to learn that sounds like gibberish to anyone outside the loop, and they both have trouble getting recognized as legitimate sports by really old people. Skateboarding didn't get into the olympics until next year, and people are still pissed about gaming being on espn
