I'm in a bit of a weird spot right now. I've been mostly working food service jobs for the last decade (on and off at different places, usually in hospitals). I stopped working for a few years so I could focus on getting my bachelors degree and then crashed and burned with my grades, so I'm kind of back to square one. I've been working a nutritional aide job at a local hospital for about eight months and like... it pays pretty well (I can reliably expect a little over $1000 in my bank account every two weeks working part time) but I rarely get out before 8:30 at night and I don't get too much joy from working it most of the time.

I want to find something else, preferably full time and with earlier hours and a similarly decent pay, but MAN it's tough figuring out what to apply for without a specialized degree. I'm sure my best bet is to go back to school, but I really don't think I have it in me to do this specific job in the meantime for another two to four years while I work towards maybe getting another slightly higher paying job lol

I'm just here to bitch about the completely awful state of websites for applying to jobs. Every one I've seen is equally awful, but usually for different reasons.
  • 20-year old website that's impossible to navigate.
  • New website that "intelligently" scrapes your resume and converts it into a completely butchered format.
  • Some websites that don't allow for profiles so that you can apply to multiple jobs with the same info.
  • Not allowing for uploads of multiple versions of a resume tailored to different jobs.
  • Not allowing upload of cover letters. . .
  • . . .but then having a section to type in comments to the hiring manager and not allowing the use of commas. (maybe it's a secret aptitude test to see if you can do it)
  • Being unclear at which point the application will actually be submitted, hence every click of "next" is a dice roll. . .
  • . . .and not having a "save" function during the multistep process.

I applied at over 20+ places this month. I got one call back from a recruiter and an email from a staffing agency inviting me to apply for another job on indeed.com

Now I got a zoom interview tomorrow. I'm nervous as I never use zoom before, but have used Teams. It's a remote job for now until the pandemic is over or they go back into the office in a few months. I'm hoping for the best and that I get it. Otherwise, its back on the job hunt again. Wish me luck!

So last week I got two offers from my company, from two departments different than my own. Literally on the same day too.

One was a salary match, and 10% client support. Mostly admin work, about equal to my current duties.

One was a step up in salary, dealing with more important clients in the same client-facing capacity I am now. With more important duties.

So I took option 2, which is a relief because I was getting weary of the issues my specific department was having

While it's not leaving my company, I know most of the promotions to roles I actually want have to go through one of those two departments I was interviewing. All the best I do an internal move too, everywhere else I interviewed was lowballing me. Although I do plan to still keep my eyes open for other jobs.

So I'm in what feels like a really shitty position;

- Currently have 8 years experience as an Outdoor Instructor
- Qualified to do Paddlesport activities, Mountain Biking, Orienteering and used to be a ropes trainer at my previous company
- Also have a Degree in Outdoor Education so essentially a lot of knowledge and experience in my field.

I left my old job in 2019 to take a step back (old job was all encompassing, very hard to get anywhere and was essentially just a job with no career path, also left for other reasons). Then covid hit, I end up working for an insurance company.

Current job is sales, I've discovered I'm really not a sales person, struggle with the targets to the point that come March is is highly likely I'll be out of a job. Been applying for new jobs since November, but having no luck. Applying for jobs in the Outdoor Industry and even though I'm getting interviews and seemingly interviewing well, I'm getting nowhere with it.

Feels like the past 8 years and the time spent doing a degree were an utter waste of time. and no industry wants me. Wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact I have an 8 month old daughter and debts that still need paying.

Somewhat lost on where to go from here.

The Zoom invite should have a test link that you can use to check your setup and practice the controls. It would be a good idea to find a friend or family member that you could set up a separate zoom meeting with to practice sharing screens (if that's needed).

I guess. I'll let you know.
The woman that I interviewed for the Cyber Security position has left the company lol. She had told me a week or two ago that she lost team members and that at least one of the positions I applied for changed from Cyber Security Analyst to Cyber Security Engineer. I found out that she left because she friended me on LinkedIn and messaged me.

Oh well, to be expected. Next week is March and I'm officially starting to send out my resume for real/outside the company now. Here we go again.....

I've been looking for a new job for months now. There are openings suited to me at one particular company that I really want to work at. I have outstanding applications for months but my apps seem to be ignored or no one has looked at them.

Last week a recruiter contacted me for an opening at said company and in a matter of days I get an interview… but it's a contract position not direct hire. The manager said he really liked my resume and I'm exactly what he's looking for. We're setting up a follow up interview to discuss further.

makes me think they don't want to hire to not have to pay benefits. It's infuriating, months of silence for my applications, but contract work is moving at lighting speed.

I have a teaching presentation for a professor position...it's on Zoom. What kind of software can I use to have a cool presentation where people can still see my face when I share my screen? Powerpoint kind of sucks.

I don't know that I'd worry about it. Honestly, different tech than other interviewees might not even be a good idea, unless it's a tech-focused department. Academics can be very strange about things. Anyway, doubtful anyone will actually have you full screen without speakers visible anyway on Zoom.

In the beginning of February I had like 7 interviews with multiple companies. I narrowed it down to 3 companies and had zoom interviews with them. 2 of 3 rejected me in the past weeks and I'm waiting on the last one which has been almost 2 and half weeks since interviewing. I don't believe I got it so I started sending my resume out again. :(

Forgot to add my backstory, I am currently employed but my current position they are working me to death and since COVID my job has become 24/7 on call. It's online advertising and basically I work 6-7 days a week and its getting worse. Work balance is completely gone and they expect me to just drop everything and work on campaigns. I was planning to quit in August even if I don't have another job lined up as our busy season is in September and October and since I run both campaigns and our reporting system, I know for sure I'll probably have a nervous breakdown. They're 3 on our team right now including me but I feel so overwhelmed. My amazing supervisor left last year because of this same issue. She felt overwhelmed and left as soon as she received an offer. Since then we hired a new team lead who is fucking dreadful. She doesn't listen and generally fucks up everything she touches. I almost flat out quit at the end of last year because of how bad she was. She hasn't progressed at all and we've had numerous meetings about it.

I'm just in a bad mental state right now and feel completely taken advantage of. One of my old coworkers who left this company told me to to just leave it. They treated him like shit too and was happy to leave.

a little confused about this since, when you share your screen on zoom, they still have a boxed window of your camera of you

also i never do presentation view etc when doing teaching via powerpoint since i sometimes draw/type on the slide, and also go to additional documents and internet tabs to show content

I've applied to ~20ish jobs since last August and finally got an interview for a level 2 quality specialist role at boeing, the interview was last Monday and I felt like it went really well. My cousin and the hiring manager used to be coworkers and when she asked him about me apparently he gave a thumbs up, so cautiously optimistic 😬 I'm supposed to hear back sometime this week. Supposedly there were 8 people interviewed for two level 2 roles and one level 3 role, so the odds aren't too shabby.

Haven't worked since August 2020 and it's only ever been part time hourly stuff so this is a huge opportunity for me, luckily those jobs gave me some good experience working with quality and compliance protocols and techniques. I had been going to school on and off for about 10 years and was one year off from finishing my EE bs when covid hit, so hopefully if I can get this job I can go back and finish and have boeing pay for it lol

Update:

Got a call from the recruiter today offering me the job, 10k over what I was expecting so didn't even try to counter lol I was too stunned and probably sounded like an idiot during the call 😂

Start date is in 6 weeks, every time I try to process what just happened my brain is like nah this ain't real lol I still can't believe it

Anyone get told that a job was filled and then see the same position posted the day after? That's pretty soul crushing and just happened to me. I know it's not a "similar" job- it's the same job. It was a unique position the company created.

Had an interview yesterday that I think went pretty well overall but in retrospect, one of my competency answers was really half baked and I came up with a much better response afterwards. Not much I can do now, of course, but there's always one thing I'm like "fuck's sake" about following an interview. Just have to wait and see for their decision next week now.

Yeah that has happened to me too. It's like they rather lie to me and say the position is filled rather than give me a chance.

You could try expanding on your answer when you send a thank you note. I've done this before and gotten to the next round of interviews.

I've worked for my state for 14 years. Recently starting apply for other jobs back in January. Took a few state exams as well. Applied to every job I was qualified for, as simple as the click of a button. No need to upload a resume because you set up a profile with your work history, education, etc.

Was contacted by 5 potential employers, went to 3 interviews. Was called back a few hours later after the 3rd and offered a position. Accepted, put in my notice. My last day at my current job is Friday, new job starts Monday. The other 2 jobs I interviewed for literally offered me jobs the day after I accepted. One even offered 10% more money than advertised.

It's bittersweet because I work with kids and it's like leaving your family, but also exciting to switch paths like this. I can't wait.

Since accepting my new position, I been contacted by like, 5 other state agencies for interviews lol. It's wild. I guess my point is I was extremely nervous about getting out there and applying/interviewing, but it wasn't so bad. Check out some state jobs if you can.

I'm back to the job search. Ooof.

That sucks, hope you're able to find something that suits you!

I'm currently in work at the moment, but I think I'm in a rut. I can only seem to get admin jobs which to be fair aren't bad and pay well, but I don't feel fulfilled by them. Not as bad as what some other folks on here are going through, but there's this sense of emptiness that I can't shake.

And when I try to break out of it, I don't have the confidence, skill or luck to make it. That's if I even figure out what it is I actually want! I just know it's not this.

I unfortunately have only experience in one niche, and I want to change careers, but obviously it means resetting to not having enough experience to get a job in the field I'd like. I have a few job agencies looking in the niche I have experience in though!

Honestly the worst part is I went through every interview stage and did a marathon 5 hour final round. At that point they've seen I was committed. I would've expected more honesty. Fuck it though. If that's how they are it's a good thing I didn't get the job.

Got a rejection that kinda hurt yesterday. I apparently didn't pass an interview within my own company that I knew almost ever single question to beforehand, and I know I was incredibly qualified for the position. I'm pretty flabbergasted. Don't know what to do now but go back to school and get a masters so I actually have a chance at some of this shit. Feels so bad, man.

Me too! :( got my letter of resignation yesterday, as well as many other members of staff.

I need to move on from retail… I'm just too stupid for anything else

Never call yourself too stupid for anything else. If you ever want to brainstorm potential things you could be good at or self employment opportunities, I've been self employed like three times in-between permanent jobs. So I can give some limited advice on that.

Also most people's employers are idiots and they're doing fine.

Is this an okay spot to seek some advice, or is there a different thread for that?
I don't see a reason not ask here. Otherwise this thread will only be bitching!

Speaking of which: I'd been getting frustrated with zero callbacks on lots of applications after 2 months. It really surprised me as I'm applying to really specialised technical jobs. But luckily I finally heard back from 1 for a screening phone call. It also happens to fit best in my skills. Fingers crossed.

Bored/fed up/not enjoying my current job so applied for a full stack developer position at a medium sized cloud provider. I ticked all the boxes they requested, except I only have a bit of react.js experience. I would've brought extra stuff to the table that they didn't ask for but would need in the products they were developing, but the react.js was the dealbreaker apparently (despite having worked with node/JS/TS for years), after going through 3 interviews and waiting for weeks. Rejected, but thanks anyway!

Fired off 10 applications afterwards, cannot be bothered with all this self promotion shit. Job searching is the fucking worst.

If it doesn't pan out, I will be all-in on the bitching myself.

So I'm applying to an organization that is receiving inventory applications for three different positions--is it a faux pas to apply for all of them? I'm qualified for each to various degrees and would really like to get my foot in there, but I'm not sure if applying to all three is a good idea.

What do you mean by inventory application? I haven't come across that before.

Applying to multiple jobs at once is something I go back and forth on. As a hiring manager I always think it looks like a shotgun approach from candidates and that they should be more discerning. As an applicant I want to get the best possible chance. It also matters if the roles are under the same management or not (I.e. will anyone that cares even see you've applied to multiple jobs).

My suggestion is to only apply to multiple if you meet the qualifications for each and can justify it as such. I would make specific cover letters for each role highlighting the different skills required for each and evidence that you have to back it up. You can even adjust your resume/CV per role if you think it's useful. Also be wary of applying to roles at significantly different levels. Don't apply to both entry level and senior level jobs, as that sends mixed messages.

EDIT: And obviously my strategy above is dependent on the website accepting multiple documents which you can use for multiple roles. God help you if it's not smart enough for that.

And to qualify my opinion as a hiring manager, I feel it comes across poorly if the candidate has not put effort into the applications. When it's a boiler plate cover letter for every role (worse still all cover letters reference the first role they applied to) then it's clear they just clicked the button in each role without thought.

There's nothing worse than having to write about how great you are. I've managed to get 3 different cover letters for 3 different types of roles now that I can adjust a few different bits on to make them each personalised. Makes things slightly easier. But that may not be possible for all job types. I feel you though. It's the failure without feedback or options that sucks the life out of you.

I interviewed for two roles at one company about a year apart from each other a few years ago. I didn't get the first job, and in the second job interview the HR rep asked why I didn't get the job. I said I didn't receive feedback and wasn't sure, but then I listed a couple reasons why I might not have. I didn't get that second job either and emailed the HR rep specifically for feedback. They blanked me. It pissed me off royally that they had the balls to ask that question while at the same time making sure it's unanswerable for me in the future.

This is my first time coming across inventory applications as well. It seems like the organization accepts applications for a window of time and then fills positions as needed later on down the road.

I've been developing different letters and resumes for each position (which is exhausting and soul-crushing), so I'll use them the best I can to specify my qualifications for each position. One is for Program Officer and the other is for Senior Program Manager, which I think compares with something like a department manager and a store manager in other industries. But like you said, if the same hiring person is fielding both applications it might be a bad idea. I'll have a think on it.

A company's been trying to poach more for like a year now. my current salary is $86k with 15% yearly bonus. They offered a salary of $115k with 15% yearly bonus, $20k signing bonus and $66k stock package (vests $22k yearly for 3 years). Would pan out to like $150k+ a year for the first 4 years. Pretty good stuff.

Interviewed for job on Tuesday and said that they will give my a response if/how they might want to move forward in about a day and a half......
Well it's basically a day and a half, or really almost a full 2 days....
Should I reach out and follow up to see what's going on...Or will that make me seem too annoying and desperate?

From the interview, I felt like I did well and the interviewer/manager seemed to liked me. Everything that was discussed about the job and its perks also seem like a real good and ideal fit for me too. I can't think of why they might want to ghost me or not get back to me as promised, unless they interviewed/found a even better candidate than me.......

But wouldn't that be too much time in between?
So much can happen in a week, and the interviewer/manager was supposed to give me so sort of response by today...
I feel like I should at least reach out to him tomorrow just to show interest that I still want the job.
I just don't want to wait too long, yet I don't want to seem too annoying and desperate either....

Hit them up on monday. Just a "thanks for taking my interview last week, just wanted to check in and see if there's any other information from me that you needed and if you know what the timeline for the process will be." The words, "I'm trying to manage my schedule" seem to work very well in situations like this.

Be careful, but be smart. Have you approached your current company with the offer so they could possibly match? If they don't want to make an effort to match, then bizzounce, but don't burn bridges.

Yeah as soon as I got it I turned around and talked to my manager about it lol. He said he'd talk to the people above him and see what he could do.

Nice! What role/title is it?
It's a game design role at a AAA studio.

I agree. As annoying as it is, give them just a little extra time. People are always overly optimistic, especially with time frames on hiring. Even if I know who I want to hire during an interview I can't always predict the timing of approvals and HR paperwork. I default to always saying a week or two for the timing, then hope I can deliver good news early.

You should definitely check in, but give them at least 3 days.

Our company instituted a policy at the start of this year where your direct supervisor immediately gets informed if you even apply for another job internally (previous policy was that you'd have to disclose when you receive an interview).

One of my colleagues quit a couple months ago, another one was recently fired after a long leave of absence, and another one is about to give his 2 weeks (currently only known to me, as we've become friends). Our team at max size is only at 7 people. Once my colleague leaves, including me it would be just four people including a new hire who just started two weeks ago. Definitely feels like a sinking ship.

Long story short, I decided to roll the dice and apply internally for the first time for a position one step up the ladder. I don't think I'll get fired for doing this if it doesn't pan out, but sadly I can't rule out that possibility. Wish me luck lol.

That's a frustrating policy. They probably think it'll help managers with planning their teams, but it really will discourage employees from moving (and staying) within the company. Hopefully your manager is reasonable. I can't see why that would lead to a firing, especially as it shows you want to stay in the company. Good luck!

After searching for months, I finally accepted a job at a new company that checks more boxes off than I actually knew I had. Was looking to shorten my commute and have a stronger work/life balance. New job is barely paying me more, but is actually 5 mins from my house vs an hour on public transit (we're about to transition off remote) but the key is the new place only works 4 days a week. Plus there's a bonus structure and a handful of other benefits. I am insanely excited to get started.
