Seems obvious so I'm sure you know this but...

Settings > iPhone Storage > Music

This shows you everything stored locally and space taken up when using iCloud Library. You can delve and delete individual songs if need be.

Can anyone recommend an iPad Mini 2/3 keyboard case that gets power from the iPad and doesn't require charging OTHER THAN the one Apple makes? A friend is shopping for one for their kid for xmas and the price of the Apple model is too salty.

I can't help but feel partially responsible
See it makes no sense at all why these playlists are not able to sync. The contents are all fine. Nothing is marked as not eligible and not uploaded anymore. All my music is now uploaded to the Cloud, even all my Overclocked remixes. But for some reason a whole bunch of playlists won't upload at all. It's not my fault in this case. It's the software. It's also inconsistent. I have a Smart Playlist I'll show you here, it has a handful of songs in it, what you see in the screenshot is all the songs in it. Not one of them is marked as ineligible. But it won't upload. It just points to the main "Date Added" (Which I was calling "Newest") playlist and shows songs with less than 5 plays. But a lot of Smart Playlists uploaded so it's not a problem with that. And a lot of SP that point to other SPs got uploaded.

To prove that it's not the contents, I created another playlist, a normal manual playlist, from the contents of the smart one...
https://imgur.com/ZR1HR1J (If it doesn't display)

Though even though it's not marked ineligible, it's not showing on my iPhone yet. So I don't know if it'll just take a few minutes. Either way it's completely batshit inconsistent and there should have been a trial period. I'm sure if I could work these problems out I'd be happy with it. But right now it's frustrating.

I know that of course. But it's still showing the same amount of space as it was before I signed up for Match so obviously it kept everything. Which makes it even worse because there's songs from playlists on my phone that I can't get to because I can't reach the playlists because they won't sync.

Anyway, if I go into there and tell iOS to delete all the music, it'll just remove it and set it to "downloadable" and I can manually download only what I want, right? It won't delete any playlists or anything important?

Correct. What I would do is delete all the local music off your phone, turn iCloud Music Library off and back on in iOS' settings, and see if that forces a more accurate resync

Continually shook by how garbage Time Machine is on High Sierra. I'm at the point I'm just going to drop it and switch to SuperDuper or something.

Anyone have an issue when mapping with Apple Maps on the watch kind of gets... stuck? I'll start navigating from the Watch, it goes fine, but then I'll flick my wrist up and see that it never updated past a couple turns ago, and it takes another moment to catch up. It SEEMS like it's catching on my phone actually, since when I raise it up I see my phone is behind as well, and it doesn't update until I look at it. I still have to do some more tests, like I think it only does this when I start mapping from the Watch and not from the phone.

Just wanna see if I'm alone here. It's quite annoying

My watch (s1) does this too, but it does usually catch up right away and then starts to give the proper directions.

I will try that.

I mean.. what did you expect? Seriously.
All I wanted from it was automatic syncing of play counts and metadata, which kind of works. It synced the one song I listened to on my way to work this morning, but hasn't synced the ones I listened to during the day yet and I can't force it. That was the only feature I wanted. I wasn't asking for much really. I don't get why iCloud takes too long to update.

I don't understand what is causing playlists to be marked as ineligible when there aren't any ineligible songs left in my library. And it's inconsistent. Some playlists don't work even though they're identical in settings to others that do. None of the contents are ineligible. It shouldn't be marking any of my playlists as incompatible. I feel I'm going to have to make a video showing off my issue and hound Apple Support about this. At the very least they'll offer a refund if it comes to it. I'd rather it not though. I want to use this. I just want it to work as advertised.

Happened to me a handful of times, not a regular occurrence though. The directions in CarPlay would always work fine but the Watch app would sometimes get stuck as you described. Happened on both my Series 0 and Series 3 Watches.

I almost never start directions from the Watch either, so I don't think it's necessarily because of that. My theory is that it's some kind of bluetooth(?) communication error where the iPhone and Watch temporarily lose connection and the Watch Maps app doesn't know how to reconnect / pick back up.

I haven't really looked into this yet, but is it possible to Bootcamp Windows onto an external SSD? I don't want to partition my internal drive, but would like to have a 250/500GB external SSD to run Windows 10 on.

Yep I have done this, used the info from here http://markthetech.com/how-to-boot-camp-usb-3-0-external-hard-drive/
Did it for some games in Windows 10 on my Macbook Pro, it actually worked really well and I did not notice it being slow.

I was curious how much data I use/download on my iphone so I went to settings -> cellular -> Current Period and it says 78.0gb for the past 8 days 17 hours.
However, if I dial *DATA# then I get a text message saying I've used 606.78mb of Unlimited.
Is the 78gb number wrong, or does that mean that only ~600mb was through celluar data and the rest was through wi-fi? I'm on the latest iOS.

The cellular tab doesn't count anything over WiFi, so trust your carrier on that one rather than iOS.

The cellular tab won't give you how long the current period has been in days or hours, it'll be a "last reset" date all the way at the very bottom. With 78 gigs yours was likely a long time ago

at a minimum this is an unforced PR error on Apple part to pull this without explanation upfront; it just feeds into the "Apple intentionally slows down your devices so you'll buy a new one" bullshit.

The throttling is a smart option, but without the context of an upfront warning and explanation of battery state, it's, well, a pr disaster waiting to happen.

Ah, it says Oct 11, 2015 was the last reset.
Thanks!

Anyone have News app notifications stop coming in sometime today? Normally I get tons throughout the day but past this morning I got nothing. I would expect the passing of the tax bill to be blowing up my phone.

I did check all my notification settings and channel settings and all that

I can understand why Apple thought they were doing the right thing to optimize older phones for battery life over performance, since at Apple battery life seems to factor into every decision they make, but I'm not sure it was the right call. I honestly think it would've been better to make battery replacement a very upfront message to the user while leaving performance intact, and maybe at a certain point it just refuses to boot and gives a battery message. At the very least, the lack of transparency to the user is just awful.

What they've done would be like instead of your car telling you your oil is low, it just silently turns off half your cylinders and limits you to a max speed of 35mph.

Hmm wonder if this is why my 5s performance feels like ass sometimes. The better does seem inaccurate and seems to jump all over the place. Granted it's really old by tech standards at this point.

I don't think the measure under fire right now was applied to phones pre-6. But yeah, performance on my 5S was rather bad and battery erratic with random shutdowns. But what to expect from a battery that has been used exhaustively over the time span of 4 years. We really need a new battery tech that doesn't degrade as fast.

What Apple said about peak current demands in cold temperatures causing shutdowns hits close to home, as that's exactly what happened with my old iPhone 5 when I moved to a cold place, as I walked outside using the phone.

Good that they addressed that, because it was an extremely frustrating situation back then. Too bad I didn't get this simple information at the time.

So I turned on news notifications for my iPad and a ton of them backfilled (all the way to Sunday) but there's nothing since Tuesday at 7pm.

Something is definitely up, I woke up to no new news notifications on my iPhone or iPad

I woke up to like 5-6 notifications from the middle of the night from News. I don't think I got a single one yesterday though.

On my 5s, I've set up Touch ID for my thumbs and my index fingers. With my thumbs, it works pretty reliably. But for my index fingers, I have to re-add the fingerprints every few days. At some point, it gets worse and worse, until it hardly ever recognizes them.

Usually, it takes a few days until Touch ID stops working, but this time, I didn't have to wait that long: I set up the fingerprint for my right index finger yesterday in the evening. I tried it a few times afterwards, and it worked perfectly on each attempt. Now, barely one day later, it doesn't work anymore, no matter how I place my finger.

So I changed some playlists around the other day and my iPhone only just an hour ago finally updated them on my phone. Surely iCloud shouldn't be taking so long to update metadata, right? It seems to only update once in a while on both ends. I just opened iTunes and it updated its play counts and last played data to about an hour ago, but there's songs I've listened to since so those won't be updated until probably tomorrow.

Crazy really. "It just works" with a bit of delay. I guess I can dismiss the delay, but I'll still have to see if I can work with Apple to figure out my Playlist problem.

Touch ID on my 5s is terrible now. It was never great compared to the upgraded version on the 6, but it's become useless over the past year.

Because I know everyone is waiting with bated breath about the News notifications: Apple is aware of it, likely going to need a software update. Could be affecting more apps than just News

Welcome to my entire experience with the 5s. That happened with every finger and thumb I tried. Worked great for a day or two, then rapidly dropped to 0% detection. Rinse and repeat. I exchanged three 5s and finally gave up, the Apple store reps had no clue. Eventually I just decided that my fingerprints don't scan well, which was underscored by my mom having the same problem. Sounds like you might have the same issue. The 2nd-gen Touch ID in the 6s didn't do much better, but at least consistently worked a third of the time. The 7 worked better, but I don't know if that was just iOS 11. It still quickly went to shit if my hands were at all dry.

So after all that, Face ID has been a blessing.

Hey, do you guys use an antivirus application for your Macs?

I just scooped a MBP for personal use. If I have a friend that watches tons of porn on really sketchy sites using my Mac, will my computer explode without a decent antivirus app? What're some good applications?

Xcode wireless debugging is so spotty and unreliable. It's an exercise in frustration. Works one day, then devices just start appearing and disappearing in 3 sec cycles the next. I mean, I'd just plug it in but somebody at Apple thought it was an amazing idea to remove the USB-C port from ATV4K.

I do not. I used to use Avast but it made my computer run noticeably worse.

For that scenario I would scoop a powerful and reliable ad blocker

I don't use antivirus, but I do use Little Snitch which is a software firewall. Highly recommended.

As for your friend, I'd make them use a guest account to minimize risk. Also ad blockers like Ghostery and uBlock as Zeyphersan said.

Bought a 64gb space gray iphone 8 today :)
First thing in the morning I plan to go get a case for it (the black silicone apple case). I've never cracked or scratched a screen in my life so I think I'm going to do like I did with my previous phones and go without a screen protector (just being careful and using common sense).

That was also my first time ever going to an apple store. Definitely a unique shopping experience.
