The Gruber speaks: https://daringfireball.net/2019/03/apple_games

I wonder what is all going to be at this event.

I think Gruber makes the good implicit point that a subscription service for iOS games doesn't really make much sense in terms of the existing landscape, so much as it's trying to create a new one. A subscription service could enable a lot more of the 'premium' games to actually flourish instead of getting killed by freemium offerings if the up-front cost is lowered via the subscription service. I think that's probably not only good for Apple's bottom line but good for consumers too in that you'd get more variety with another path to make money in the App Store.

The weakness here is still that Apple doesn't have gaming DNA and as far as I know they haven't added a major executive who does. Any gaming initiations seem like they're going to be hobbled out the gate if Apple doesn't really understand gaming on their platform (if they did, they wouldn't have let Game Center languish and die and let stuff like Xbox Live step in to fill the gap.)

The only thing OLED has going for it is black being entirely black (unlit). In any scenario that doesn't hinge on that (movies with dark scenes, usage in bright sunlight), a good LCDs is going to be better.
I'm assuming you mean for phone use.

I do wish OLED phone screens were better at near black. I'm surprised at the trailing that is absent from my TV. Something to do with the pixel structure used?

I'm thinking Apple should go for some kind of all in one subscription service like Amazon prime.

Music-News-VideoGaming-AppleCare all for one monthly price.

Ok money no object...what's the best monitor out there that has HDR and 4K which I can use my 2018 Macbook Pro + Thunderbolt 3 and also game on my PS4 PRO?

If you want to game at 4K with HDR then your gonna need to add an eGPU.

There is nothing wrong with the LG Ultrafine displays on Apples web site.

Keep in mind that when you are looking to use a 4K HDR monitor you need a lot of brightness for the HDR. Just about every cheap HDR monitor you find is a lot cheaper becuase it has insufficient brightness (often even hard to find the specs).

My friends tell me that 4K monitors even studder with the 2018 MacMini (without an eGPU) when using something like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro. They are getting an eGPU both for work and for gaming.

Cool thanks. I don't plan on gaming much on the MacBook itself TBH but it's my main computer. Gaming is on the PS4 Pro so I want best of both worlds.

The 5K LG screen looks nice but it's USB-C only connection means I cannot use the Pro aswell, right?

Im looking to get my wife a new iPad since her iPad mini 2 is starting to have some problems. Is the new mini worth the extra $150 compared to the 2018 9.7" model? All she does is read internet/watch YouTube on it. Looking for it to last hopefully another 4 years like the mini she currently has.

The mini has a much newer SoC (A12 vs A10) and a better display, so if she already likes the mini form factor it's probably worth the extra. The A12 will be supported longer than the A10, probably by at least 2 years.

It is worth the extra 150 in the sense that that is justified by the pretty significant spec bump between the Mini and the 2018 iPad, as the mini is the Air equivalent.

But if all she is doing is YouTube and browsing, then no, save your money.

Best Buy has the new iPad Pro on sale for this week (12-13% off); I've been once the fence, since I've really grown attached to my 2018 iPad 9.7". I had $155 of Reward Zone points, so I bit the bullet. The performance in games is very apparent, but, outside of that, the 120Hz screen, and FaceID, I'm not entirely convinced it was the best use of my money. I am not a content creator, which is certainly the targeted audience. However, I have no doubt this will be a device Apple supports for a very long time.

This morning I went to my local Bestbuy and was at the Apple section. I had the iPhone XS Max, original X, the Xr, and my 8 all side by side and the first thing I did was turn off True Tone on all the phones. Then I went to the main settings screen on all the phones and noticed that on the OLED phones (X and XS Max) the display shifted to look noticeably bluer if if tilted the screen slightly and was slightly yellowish if looking at it head on compared to the LCD phones. Also, the text seemed to slightly trail on the OLED phones when scrolling up or down (like maybe slow pixel response?) but this didn't happen on the others. The screen didn't really look any sharper to me either going through the various apps and surfing the web. After hearing so much about OLED and looking forward to it... it seems like I actually don't like it and prefer regular LCD screens. Definitely wasn't the experience I was expecting :(

I don't know, wallpapers with deep blacks and watching a movie with HDR on the Max looks pretty glorious

looking over the shows rumored for the service, there's a couple i'd be interested in checking out...

See
This is a sci-fi drama in a future where all humans are blind - except for a pair of twins. It will star Jason Momoa (of Aquaman and Game of Thrones) and comes from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight and The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence.

Time Bandits
Apple has bought an adaptation of the Terry Gilliam's 1981 film Time Bandits. It's the story of six dwarves on the run from the Supreme Being. Gilliam will reportedly be a "non-writing executive partner," according to Deadline.
The series will be co-written and directed by Taika Waititi - who bought us Thor: Ragnarok.

Central Park
This will be an animated musical comedy series staring Kristen Bell and Josh Gad (who last worked together on Frozen), as well as Hamilton's Leslie Odom Jr and Daveed Diggs, Tituss Burgess from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Transparentactress Kathryn Hahn and Academy Award nominee Stanley Tucci, according to Digital Spy.
The series is based on a family of Central Park caretakers who have to save the world.
It's from the creator of Bob's Burgers, Loren Bouchard and is being co-written with Josh Gad and Nora Smith. Apple is committed to 26 episodes over two seasons.

Untitled drama from La La Land writer
La La Land's Damien Chazelle has been signed up by Apple to write and direct a drama series for Apple.
House of Cards studio MRC is also involved with the show.

edit: ugh accidental dp

My girlfriend is an illustrator and needs a new iMac. Luckily Apple just released new ones!!

However, I'm trying to decide which one she should get. I'm inclined to get her the hexacore 3.0 GHz i5, but afaik Photoshop isn't all that good at multicore and thus big clock speeds are more beneficial, and one model lower has the 3.6 GHz i3. The i3 doesn't have turbo boost though, so I'm not quite sure what's best here. In any case, I'm upgrading her ram to 16 GB.

The i5 model also has a better gpu with double the vram, and it comes with the fusion drive by default. When I select the fusion drive for the i3 model, it's only marginally cheaper. Not sure how much the better gpu will benefit her, though.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

GF ordered an iPhone 7 a couple of days ago and should be getting it today or tomorrow. This is her first iPhone coming from Androids only, most recently a half dead Oneplus 3, so the exact same situation I was in with my iPhone 8 back when it came out. Pretty interested in hearing if her impressions line up with mine.

How long can we expect Apple to officially support 7? Until iOS 15 at best?

Personally, i wonder if the (current) benefits of a higher individual core clockspeed in Photoshop outweigh the drawbacks of a worse GPU.
Who knows whether or not (or when) Adobe might optimize their suite around multicore CPUs or GPU acceleration.

These are the configs you're looking at, right?

I don't know about the difference in performance of the 555X and 560X but that extra VRAM sure sounds like something that is a lot more future proof :/

The 6 got iOS 12 and by WWDC we will find out if it's gonna get iOS 13. (i see no reason why it shouldn't. It's running iOS 12 perfectly fine)
So iOS 15 for the (2 year younger) iPhone 7 doesn't really sound like that much of a reach.

The record is currently the 5S, which got iOS 6 through 12 (I don't imagine it will get 13). So if they stick to that 6 year thing, iPhone 7 should get up to 15.

I'm actually not convinced the 6 is gonna get iOS 13. It's supposed to be a big change, and the processor jump from the A7 to the A8 wasn't that huge (it was mostly eaten up by the increase in screen res) and the 1GB of RAM is going to be a huge limitation. I can imagine iOS 13 dropping all devices with less than 2GB of RAM (iPhone 5S/6, iPad Air, iPad Mini 2/3). The only reason they might not is because they still sell the iPod touch with 1GB of RAM, but they might decide they don't give a shit about the iPod touch line in regards to future updates.

It should be noted that previous to 5S, the iPhone had 32-bit processors and iOS 11 and higher no longer support those, every other device has been getting updates since then, so all the way back to the 5S.

Knowing that, it's impossible to say if and when Apple will stop supporting those devices. Their latest update's main feature was making older device perform better, so it's pretty much anyone's guess. As long as the core architecture remains the same, the only bottleneck I can imagine is the RAM requirement exceeding the available RAM in the old devices. So they're either going to pick an arbitrary cut-off date of x years post-release, or they'll support everything for as long as they can. Either way, with an iPhone 7, I agree that I can't imagine support being removed for at least iOS 13 and 14.

On the other hand, Apple tends to always "bless" their devices with one update too many - intentional or not, the final update tends to be the one that makes the device kinda sluggish.
Basically, the final year of support tends to be a trade-off between "do i want one more iOS generation of new features" vs. "do i want to stick with a somewhat more responsive device?"

But nobody's able to tell whether or not that concept is going to still exist 2-3 years from now. iOS 12 was kind of a paradigm shift with regards to iOS update affecting performance of older devices.

I would still get the hexacore i5, even though the base clock is "only" 3.0 Ghz it should still turbo boost higher and maintain it than the i3. If PS does not push all 6 cores to max then the chances of 1-2 cores maintaining around 3.9-4 Ghz are high (and that is for sustained loads, with short bursts of speed the i5 will be way faster than the i3).

The difference between the GPUs is marginal in terms of performance, but the 4GB of VRAM is highly preferable for video and photo workloads.

I would suggest to get the i5 model.

The A10 of the iPhone 7 is still a very fast CPU, it should reach iOS 15 easily.

Cool beans, thanks for the replies. As long as she's happy with iPhone/iOS itself, I'm sure the iPhone 7 will last her longer than the OP3 did either way. The battery on that phone seemed to go to shit extraordinarily fast for both of us.

Those are the configs, yes. It seems that the Photoshop only really uses the GPU for certain filters, effects and resizing, of which my gf only uses resizing when her illustration in complete. So I'm not quite sure how benificial the better GPU is going to be for her workflow. I've only researched this for like 10 minutes so I might be wrong.

I like futureproofing though, and the extra VRAM does indeed sound good for that.

On the other hand, could the better GPU power and vram be useful for mitigating OS overhead?

I would still get the hexacore i5, even though the base clock is "only" 3.0 Ghz it should still turbo boost higher and maintain it than the i3. Turboboosting those first two cores does sound like a good time. I suppose the hexacore is also useful for multitasking, although I'm not sure if she's running enough applications and processes to make a difference between the i3 and the i5.

Thanks to you both! At the very least this machine, be it i3 or i5, it going to be a big improvement over her current base model late 2013 iMac with 4 GB of RAM and some shitty iGPU, hah.

man, why doesn't amazon have the 12.9inch 256GB Pro for the same price as Best Bay (999).
I'm tempted to just buy the 512GB. future proof that bad boy. With my Amazon CC it would be $1,092 plus tax.

https://www.macrumors.com/2019/03/25/deals-spotlight-ipad-pros-low/

I find it weird to spend so much extra for so much storage when Apple makes it so hard to keep things on your iOS devices other than Video, Music and Photos all from iTunes.

I have the 256GB 10.5" iPad Pro and I have 165GB available.

No matter what cloud storage provider I use they all make it pretty hard to download say an entire work cloud storage folder onto an iOS device even if on desktop that would be a laughable design move.

I do a lot of photo editing and I like everything on the device instead of the device trying to manage it. I've got 185GB of 256GB in use on my iPhone, so don't want to hit that limit on the iPad.

I would like if they reintroduced the 128GB option, that would be the perfect storage size for a lot of people, but of course the perfect storage size for consumers is the worst option for the company, so they will never give us this option anymore.

XR has 128GB and it's only $50 more than the 64GB so it sells exceptionally well

For what it's worth, the "perfect storage size" every year is whatever Apple doesn't make. Be it 32GB, or 64GB, or 128GB, it doesn't matter.

Hmmm, my girlfriend's Macbook Air (mid 2012) seems to have a borked battery. Now i ordered an iFixit replacement battery right away - but she's also thinking about just upgrading her machine and selling the old one.

Basically, there's one Macbook Air (retina) you can buy - they do show 2 models in the store (1199 and 1399) but the latter is just the 'cheaper' one with the 256gb SSD pre-selected, right?

I guess she should better opt for the 256gig, because doing some light video editing and having a large Photos Library really sucks on the 128gig model...

Also, she's a teacher - when going through the "edu" Apple online store, the device is priced at a 10% rebate. We made it all the way to checkout, for testing purposes. When (and how?) would she be verified as an educational professional? It seems anyone could order a Macbook at the 'edu store' price?

yep, the $1199 and $1399 models are the same except for storage. the only configurations for the retina air are different storage and 8 or 16gb of ram.

Does the new iPad Pro support the old pencil as well as the new? Have a pencil from the original pro and I don't use enough to justify a new pencil if I updated my iPad

Hmm, might give those a look. Although I'm not convinced they'll look less conspicuous than Airpods.
