Apple software support is just unmatched from the competition, as the products are more expensive. But it balances out with the life people can get out of them.

Good job Apple.

Wouldn't say it's unmatched as Microsoft is nuts when it comes to legacy support, but I'll give them a slice of cake for supporting a 6s, it's nuts.

They must have some good data of enough people still using it to still support it

I'm still using a 6s. I kept it because of the headphone port. I'll let it go eventually.

My wife had a 5s until 3 weeks ago. She tried to get a battery replacement at the Apple store and they said they couldn't do it because they thought it had other problems.

I had a 1st gen SE until last year. Just got tired of that tbh and wanted a better camera.

Luckily I got both for $25 each from a new stock clearance on Virgin mobiles site in like 2015. The same sale had a deal for $30 service, and even though they sold their business to Boost mobile we are both grandfathered into the $30 a month service.

This is legit amazing. I have a 6S. It s on its last legs but I'm trying to hold off until the unveiling of the 13 before upgrading. No one else in the mobile space, to my knowledge, offers OS updates for devices released 6 years ago.

This should be the norm for Android as well. It's disgusting how much we waste by buying new phones all the time.

they been still selling it in developing markets for ages and was the "sign up for this random prepaid carrier and get a FREE IPHONE!" in the USA for a long time too(along with the iPhone SE)

makes sense it would get abnormally long support

Fuck microsoft when it comes to this. They released the Lumia 900 and then cut off all future versions of windows phone for it after 8 months. Was such a shitshow for their flagship device.

It's been 9 years and I'm still bitter.

Oh weird, I thought iOS 14 was going to be the last supported one for some reason, or maybe I just assumed it was because it was the oldest supported of the mainline iPhones. Went from 6s -> 12 Pro Max

iPad Air 2 was released in 2014 and is getting iPadOS 15. Apple still respects the greatest iPad

I had a (regular) 6 until very recently. Picked up a prepaid LG phone to replace it. Kind of crazy that one stage up from the 6 would have kept ticking, though.

Does google and Samsung still support older devices like Apple?
Not sure about Pixels but Samsung's Galaxy devices get major OS updates for three years (increased from two last year). After that, they still tend to get security updates for a couple more years. My old Galaxy S7 (released 2016, around 6 months after iPhone 6S) which I still use sometimes still gets OS security patches.

Android is a bit different to iOS too in that many of the core apps and underlying services are updated from the Play Store and don't necessarily need an OS update.

1st gen SE here. iOS crashes several times a day, and sometimes it takes a few minutes of pushing some combination of the power and home buttons to turn my phone on after one of these crashes.

I'll probably have to finally upgrade at some point soon.

Amazing support.

My mother still has an iPhone 6 Plus and it still gets security updates and works perfectly for her needs. Really happy with Apple. 😄

I could be wrong, but IIRC you're lucky if you get 18-24 months of support.
Google recently stopped supporting the Pixel 2 (2017-2020) and Samsung has one more major version update planned for the S10 (2019-2022). They are the best in Android in this regard.
The Samsung equivalent would be Galaxy s6, it's last major update was probably a year and half maybe 2 years after release.

Samsung still supports S8/Tab S4, but only security updates.

OS upgrades? :(
i remember back in the day, you'd get the latest Android Version like 3 months later (depending on your carrier and what bloat they needed to add lol) and even then it would be butchered w touch wiz

Thanks I've never used Android phones so I was not sure if google or Samsung update their older devices.

That's wildly impressive. The iPhone 6s launched with iOS 9; this represents its sixth major OS update.

I don't really understand the point in the OP about Apple products being more expensive. That's true for some Apple products but not really for iPhones. The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus were priced exactly in line with the contemporaneous Samsung Galaxy S line (the S6 and S6 edge), with the 16GB and 64GB iPhones bookending the 32GB Galaxies in price. To this day, the iPhone 12 is within $30 of the MSRP of the Galaxy S21 (and that model of Galaxy actually had to switch to a plastic back to remain price competitive). And there's an even cheaper iPhone mini. That Galaxy S6, by the way, apparently got all of two major Android updates.

I'm not trying to stan Apple or whatever but that's just something that has never really made sense to me, like people assume the iPhones have to be more expensive than their competitors "because Apple" but the numbers don't really bear that out. I've worked mobile retail and I've seen people say things like "oh I'm not looking to spend iPhone money" and then buy an $800 Galaxy, I've never understood it. Apple is guilty of many things but charging more for iPhones than their competition really isn't one of them.

officially no, but the fan communities do.

Android 11 on a Galaxy S2, which launched with Android 2.3 in 2011. Conversely the iPhone of that year, the 4S, stopped any updates with iOS 9 in 2015 :p

Androids frequently go on sale though, and you're only looking at prices in the US. Apples prices outside of the US can be truly out of this world.

Too bad my Haswell MBP isn't getting MacOS Monterey. Don't really see what's so much better about the newer intel chips, feels pretty arbitrary to me.

To be honest that sounds like battery problems. What's your battery health at?

My first gen iphone SE still works great. Only issues I have are with the battery life, which ain't what it used to be, and the fact that I have the 16 gb model. 16 gb is simply not enough in 2021. Apps used be like 25 mb back in the day but now almost every app is 250 mb plus. I will likely upgrade to whatever the next iphone is simply for storage and battery life.

lots of Apple stuff is way overpriced (like the fucking Ram upgrades for the M1 macs) but their software updates are pretty darn nice.
