How is it? I haven't ordered jack since early March. Is it safe?
Everything is a risk but my experience has been mostly fine. In LA, they all have masks and often some markers on the ground for where to stand. If you go to the store for grocery, this is probably an order of magnitude safer. Because these restaurants are usually not crowded. So you just need to worry about the guy handing you the food. And, if it's a hot dish, the cooking process should kill the virus.

here
of course, all these places and apps have contactless delivery and take out

my local Chinese takeaway has a custom made door where they open one side, put your food in, close the door, and then you open the door and take your food

Not in America, so my leaders actually give a shit, but I never really stopped.

I can't NOT order ma Pizza.
Though they're only open for 4 hours, 3 days a week and they bring the pizza out to you.

I do takeout since march. Every time we get food I use wipes to clean the containers or plastic bag. I also use gloves every time I grab the food just in case.

Sounds paranoid but I ain't risking it.

Yes, once every other week or so.

EDIT: it's still a risk. Obviously your food is prepared and handled by others which is more chances for exposure.

I work in a restaurant and I've been to a few around to see how others work. Trust me - you do not want to order anything from any resturant right now. Ironically, more fast food places seem to be safer, since employees prepare food in front of the customer will wear a mask at all times.

Not in the back of the kitchen. It's already deathly hot there, and being forced to wear the mask for an 8 hour shift is far more bothersome. To be clear, I'm not saying that as an argument against wearing a mask, because everyone absolutely should wear them, but the cooks I've seen do not follow this rule. They will wear it with the nose uncovered, they will take it off for stretches at a time, I even saw one where he cut a hole into the bottom of a mask so it looked like he was wearing it properly at a casual glance.

Near as I can tell, if a cook can get away with getting around a mask, they will.

Yeah. I usually put the food on one of my plates and microwave it for a little bit. Admittedly, I don't live in the States. Was very apprehensive about ordering when the situation was a lot worse over here back in March/April.

Safe Takeout in the Coronavirus Crisis

During the coronavirus pandemic, many people are opting for food delivery or takeout. Wanting to protect against the virus, those people may wonder: Is takeout safe?
Cooking food to a safe temperature, such as 165 degrees Fahrenheit, is going to kill any virus particles that might have gotten onto food.

Food is considered low risk because COVID-19 is a respiratory virus, meaning it's primarily passed from person to person in droplets when someone who is infected sneezes or coughs.

Unlike bacteria, viruses do not have the capability to grow inside food as they would in a living person or animal. To be extra safe, you can reheat the food to kill any virus particles on the surface.

It's a respiratory illness passed directly from person to person. There isn't any indication that it can be spread from eating food prepared by someone who's sick.

UberEats, DoorDash, and GrubHub have been giving out so many deals that I've been taking advantage of it when I can. I just go to pickup and bring it home.

Take out. The times I used delivery apps the food always showed up late and cold. Since I've been home since March I might aswell drive myself to pick it up as a way to get out of the house and enjoy a drive.

Yup. I don't feel any more sketchy about it than buying groceries. Zero contact delivery is nice. Not like I'm doing it every day but COVID hasn't deterred me from ordering food. Also nice to support my local spots.

I don't live in the states though and my region has had like 1 confirmed case every 5 days on average for a while now. We're still cautious (wear masks out of the house, no groups obviously) but it's not as oppressive of a threat here right now.

Whoa, you haven't ordered since March? That's dedication.

Been ordering take out once a week since May and as long as you're practicing safe measures, the risks are relatively low:

What we know about SARS-CoV-2 [the virus that causes the fast-spreading disease COVID-19] is that it's transmitted via respiratory droplets. That means it needs to get into your respiratory tract to cause infection. In contrast, foodborne viruses are transmitted by the fecal-oral routes—you actually have to eat those particular viruses, like norovirus or hepatitis A, in order to get an infection.

Of course, there is still so much we don't know and waiting for the food at the restaurant and picking up can be a risk. I do have a routine where I make sure the containers are either sanitized or thrown away and I reheat the food.

Fck yes. Several times a week and I'm living in a hot zone like Houston. So far there is no report of viral transmission through food containers yet so I'm not very worried. Just wash my hands thoroughly before I eat like I normally do.

Seems fairly low risk to order anything you can reheat - wouldn't this minimize the chances of contracting anything?

I haven't really heard of anyone getting it through food either. Seems that the packaging itself that the food comes in would be more of a vector if you rub your face/eyes after handling it

Yeah, I'd agree with this. I worked at an Edible Arrangements until recently, and right before I quit we got the order form corporate that everyone has to wear a mask. One of our employees was a crazy conspiracy idiot and refused, so the manager was just "well, OK but you just can't go up front"

I imagine its similar in other places.

All the time. Risks due to surface transmission and consuming food directly, to my knowledge, seem to be very low, as long as the delivery is contactless. They just leave it at my door. I get the meal ready, wash my hands thoroughly, then enjoy one of the few comforts left to me.

I was using Ubereats regularly here in Tokyo until a friend of mine recently lost her job. She happens to be an excellent cook, so she makes me large portions that I share with her and I pay for the food. It comes out a lot cheaper than dining out, so it's a win-win.

I've ordered take-out for like 10 times now and I'm still alive. And becoming more lazy every time I order.

The only thing that is different here in the Netherlands is that they drop the package at your front door and wait at a safe distance until you picked it up.

Quite regularly and IIRC it's considered very safe by specialists.

YMMV though depending on where you live and of course information is changing all the time.

There are different factors. The city you live and the place you go to. I thought my friends were crazy eating out and March, but I've been going to my Chinese Food place every other week since like late April.

They sealed the counter, they wear their mask, hand sanitizer is out in the open, and paying with cash makes the transaction easier. And it's easy to avoid other customers, just wait outside until they leave, I've been in alone 90% of the time. Take my food and rinse the canned drinks when I get home.

I feel comfortable taking that risk in my city, because it's smaller and it is my favorite place to eat.

During lockdown i was eating takeout like 5 times a week because there was no way in fucking hell i was going to a grocery store. These people leave it at the door you pay/tip online ezpz lemon squeezy. Unfortunately we don't have grocery delivery here and with a lot of spikes happening in my city i have gotten back into ordering takeout but only like 2-3 times a week at most because i stocked the fuck up.

People in my city are morons they don't wear mask they touch everything and put it back and cough all over the place i won't be caught dead in a grocery store until our numbers are in the single digits. I'll probably switch to prepped meals online soon.

Haven't ate fast food or in a restaurant since March 11th. Last meal I got was Chipotle. However, we may break that streak when we get Papa Murphy's take and bake next weekend.

Yes, plenty of times.

Do not feel uncomfortable about it, and is good to support local small takeaways.

Yes, once or twice a week. Probably more than before the pandemic! Partly because we want to support the local restaurants and cafes around here.

Just wash my hands and dispose of the packaging etc before i start. Most places have been pretty good about contactless drop offs as well.

It's a small treat in these shitty times as well.

My wife and I do delivery all the time, it really isn't an issue at all. I've went to grab takeout a couple times from a local Chinese place we like, they bring it to your car, but I haven't went inside a building to pickup anything since this all started.

I've gotten takeout/delivery 4 times over the last 3 months. While we were excited for some of our favorite meals we haven't had in so long, we ultimately haven't found it to be as satisfying as we'd have expected. I can see it staying a once a month kind of thing going forward.

it's pretty safe here to get takeout but being the paranoid person I am, I haven't had takeout since March. and I don't know when I'll get back to it. Uber Eats and Deliveroo keep sending me notifs on how it's completely safe to do so and it may be true but I can't take the risk yet

Yeah me and my housemates get something delivered every Friday, it's basically one of our mental health rituals. The deliveries have been really good about doing no-contact delivery - they step away and leave the bag for me to take out of their cycle bag etc.

My dad ordered from a place that didn't take cards and some guy just turned up with a bowl and asked him to throw the money in it lmao. Imagine being a restaurant and not taking cards in 2020 during a pandemic.
