i think 2020 has been a pretty good year, and there's a lot more coming before the end of the year (including the launch of two brand new consoles). if anything, (at least for me) it always feels like there's 2 or 3 games coming out at once that i want to play so i have to pick and choose.

for reference, these are the top games of 2020 according to opencritic. there's a lot of diversity between them, with great games in different genres for all platforms.

August and early september were dry for me, aside from Fall Guys.

In a couple of weeks, I'm looking forward to Genshin Impact, 13 Sentinels, and Little Hope.

Uhh, no. There's always too many games if anything. I'm currently juggling HZD and Wasteland 3 on PC, while in the middle of finishing the last, long chapter of Xenoblade Chronicles DE on Switch. And I haven't even had time to start Final Fantasy VII:R on PS4 yet... 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is just around the corner, and there's many other games, brand new and older, that I want to play.

I don't share that sentiment at all. I just bought Paradise Killer and CrossCode on Switch and had to restrain myself not to buy Spiritfarer and The Last Campfire as well (yet), started Tony Hawk on PS4 yesterday, Tell Me Why and Wasteland 3 are waiting on my XBOX, I'm interested in Avengers, over the next 6 weeks we get 13 Sentinels, Cloudpunk, Bullets per Minute, Mario 3D Allstars, Spelunky 2, Genshin Impact, Dirt 5, Crash 4, Star Wars Squadrons, Mafia...I don't see any drought despite the pandemic and all the delays.

I think this is first time in like 20 years where I don't have any officially announced game that I am super hyped about and thinking about it very often.
FF7R part 2 would be one of them, but technically it isn't officially announced so I am excluding that...

The only upcoming announced games that I am somewhat hyped about are Elden Ring and Tales of Arise, but we haven't seen much of these games for me to get truly hyped yet.

Yeah I'm in a very simillar situation.

THPS1&2, Avengers were just released this week, though I've been replaying Mario Allstars instead on my Switch... Mario 3D Allstars and 13 Sentinels coming out later this month. Crash 4 next month... so no, no there's no shortage of games for me to buy and play (and that's not counting my evolving backlog)

No?
There are a lot of huge games coming out in the next 4 months before the end of 2020.
(e.g. Cyberpunk 2077, CoD Black Ops, Valhalla, Watch Dogs)
Probably none of those are of interest to you and that's fine, but that doesn't make this a drought by any stretch of the definition.

I only think there's a drought if you are a Switch owner that doesn't care for indies. September has a lot going in it. Potential Goty Spleunky 2 is out in a mere 2 weeks

Hell, no. Xbox delivered so hard in August, I'm still catching up. Get Wasteland 3, OP, it's freaking amazing and on most current systems :)

Having played both Ghost of Tsushima and Last of Us 2 (and completing both) ... nope. Pretty awesome time to be a gamer imo

This summer the new TrackMania got out. I got addicted to Rocket Arena. Playing Hyper Scape fairly regularly, still. Another dope battle royale, Spellbreak came out. Another solid shooter, Rogue Company made me have fun, though I didn't really get addicted there. Playing Carrion, Battletoads, Flight Simulator, Grounded, New Super Lucky's Tale, Touhou Luna Nights and so on through Game Pass. Still need to get to stuff like Spiritfarer, Tell Me Why, Hypnospace Outlaw and Wasteland 3 on the service, both came out these days. Kingdoms of Amalur is getting remastered this month. A new Serious Sam is coming this very same month. Still need to finish the first DLC for Minecraft Dungeons as the second one is dropping in a couple days. The Doom ports by Bethesda keep getting new campaigns. Found the fun f2p game Island Saver on Xbox. Played the Spongebob and the Destroy All Humans remaster, waiting for Hotshot Racing and Minoria coming out next week. The Mario remasters are out in two weeks. Also played the new releases or the new console versions of games like the great Drake Hollow, stuff like Skully, Heroes of Hammerwatch, Tannenberg, Superliminal. The new SUPERHOT was a lot of fun, Maneater is my surprise of the year so far. In the next 2 months the "classics" like COD and FIFA arrive. Cyberpunk is finally releasing. A new DIRT is coming. Freaking next-gen is beginning. I might buy THPS, reviews are glorious

This is a drought? I can't fucking keep up.

EDIT: I forgot I also have to begin (already have them, bought, F2P or Game Pass): Crusader Kings 3, the new Total War and Diabotical. Plus probably more I'm forgetting.

There's a drought of new Nintendo releases, but there are some previously released games I'm interested in.

Have a ton more to do in Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, and I have 4 other games in my collection that I haven't even started. I'm good.

Moon came out on switch and it's the best game of the year. As for upcoming Nintendo games, its not like there's a shortage of old stuff from them to play. There's like 100 games on Gamepass if you have that, too.

well...there's this thing called the Corona Virus, don't know if you know about it.

And we have already gotten a ton of good games this year already despite this. Some of you really have a ton of free time or have a giant backlog if droughts are a problem for you.

Maybe if you only chase new stuff or if you're only playing Nintendo games.

Between game releases I forgot about like Wasteland 3 or that surprised me like Risk of Rain2, Warframe and Path of exile dropping big new chunks of content same for Monster Hunter World in a bit, a little bit of Animal crossing here and there and what we know is coming in the next few months I'm set for a while, and that's excluding diving into the huge good old backlog pile, or games that are not particularly a priority but on the to-play list like the PC versions of Death Stranding and Horizon Zero Dawn.

So no, plenty to play even considering the state of things.
If you feel that way I would definitely recommend to expand your horizons a bit, you might get surprised.

In the middle of a global pandemic that has the entire gaming industry on a several month delay.

A few months out from brand new consoles, which are going to take the focus.

Also, like...

Final Fantasy VII Remake
Resident Evil 3 Remake
Persona 5 Royal
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
The Last of Us Part II
Dreams
Bloodstained Curse of the Moon 2
Deadly Premonition 2
Ghosts of Tsushima
Paper Mario: The Origami King
Fall Guys
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered
Marvel's Avengers

... yeah, 2020 has had plenty of games to keep me busy.

See I already played all of that ( aside from deadly Premonition 2 -love swery's story but oooof @ the rest and ff crystal chronicles which again is a old game :/

Yeah I really be chasing only New AAA and new Nintendo stuff so that list is pretty bleak tbh

Thanks for reminding me of genshin impact though I'm curious, but will wait for reviews cause it is also a mobile game

No, but I probably don't really feel droughts so much any more.

So many games in my backlog, or want to play pile, that it doesn't bother me.

Just wish Nintendo would announce something that interests me before my next voucher expires. Thought it would be a sure thing that something I really wanted would be available for preorder would be out within a year. I feel like I was wrong.

I'm struggling to pick what to play next right now because I have so many choices, so I think it's the opposite of a drought for me.

Maybe get Game Pass

Microsoft in the last month has released:

Wasteland 3
Battletoads
Tell Me Why
Flight Sim

Then you've had

Ghost of Tsushima
Avengers
Fall Guys

Plus more I can't even think of. Like drought? Seriously? Do you only play one type of game or something?

It sounds like your definition of AAA is "3rd person action adventure only available on Sony consoles (and now, PC)". You're depriving yourself of some amazing experiences by imposing such specific criteria on your gaming habits. One of my favourite games in recent years started off as a student project and was put together by a tiny team. It's not AAA by any definition but it sits up there with the greats for me.

You should definitely try out the games Bushido recommended, there's many high scoring games in that list and you might find you actually like and enjoy different types of games.

No not really. Just got a platinum on Ghost of Tshushima. Still have to play The Last of Us 2 and Final Fantasy VII remake. Also want to play THPS. And then you have Cyberpunk and Assassins Creed coming. And the new consoles.

Enough to play.

Definitely can't relate. Even if I didn't have a giant backlog, CK3 just came out so I'm sorted for a solid month or so. Should tide me over till we get some next gen news.

Even with the pandemic this has still been a pretty good year for releases. I expected more stuff to get bumped to be honest.

With Wasteland 3 and Crusader Kings 3, I'm probably covered for the rest of the year. So no, I don't feel like there's a drought. It feels more like I'm drowning in options right now.

Mostly Japanese stuff ( capcom and nintendo ) and Sony's AAA offerings.
Already played ghost of Tushumia and I got bored of fall guys after a week.
And like I said avengers beta was a glorified destiny clone

no thanks..@the Gamepass selection

I play indie games but rarely ( ie bloodstained, hollow knight and recently fall guys ) but the stuff he mentioned just sound so uninterestingggg like dirt or that star wars dog fight game 😪

I tried various stuff over the years but my taste really refined to Capcom, nintendo and Sony I guess so seeing these publishers MiA this fall has got me Thirsty' need somethingggg

If you like Metroidvania im assuming you played the Ori games? Will of the Wisps is on Game Pass and is probably my GOTY. There's always a huge backlog of games, whether they weren't affordable at the time or just forgotten about.

Played the first one and I couldn't get into the slow opening/ story driven nature of it and gave up

I actually have too much stuff to do. If talking about online games like XIV and mobile games like FGO is cheating, Paradise Hearts, Crusader Kings, moon and Tell Me Why all just came out. I still mess around in Animal Crossing quite often despite putting 200+ hours into the game, bf hasn't cracked open Astral Chain that I just bought him for his bday, and I have a huge backlog on Steam so I can just pick one of those at random (current stuff on my desktop to go through is....Hero U, Griftlands, Wildermyth, Age of Decadence and What Remains of Edith Finch). I am hoping to get through at least of few of these this weekend...

Perhaps you should've opened the thread with the information that you're really only interested in about 5 developers, instead of declaring this arbitrary drought. Might have saved some people a bit of time.

With that said, you never know what kind of fun shit you might come across if you expand your selection.

If this is meant to be a drought then I dont want to see what a flood of games looks like. Just in the last month I've been playing Wasteland 3, Crusader Kings 3, Flight Simulator, No Straight Roads, moon, and then Tony Hawk yesterday. All of them being some of the best games I've played this year. And theres more I'd love to play if I had more time and money.

It's only really a drought if you have narrow tastes because theres new interesting stuff out every week. Just this month still has Spelunky 2, A Monsters Expedition, the Mario Collection, Serious Sam 4, Genshin Impact and 13 Sentinels coming. Theres basically something for everyone.

Not for me, I have too much to play. Got Tony Hawk going with Wasteland 3 and Battletoads in the chamber. Also have New Lucky's Tale and Hypnospace to go through.
