I don't dislike it, but I don't like it the way most do. It was an OK game, but it wasn't a RE game by my standards.

There's literally nothing that's universally liked, taste and people differ too differently. Also add to that when something is praised it leads to some people who actively try to not enjoy themselves or focus on the negatives more than the positives, which I do fully believe the mindset you go into anything will in fact change your personal experience with it.

I love Resident Evil 4, I think is superbly designed for what it's trying to be and paced fantastically, but frankly some people just are not going to like what it's trying to be in the first place.

I think RE4 is REALLY GOOD at what it's aiming to be, it hits with the audience it was aiming for masterfully. But what it was aiming to be was not universal, and that's fine as nothing is universally liked. The reason you see so many people praise RE4 is three main reasons though;

01.) It was one of the game changers in the history of gaming, if you were making a list of the most influential video games ever released, RE4 would be included on it no doubt. Influencers often get a lot of leeway because they created/popularized several new things that changed the industry through being impactful. It's why you, for example, see people regard the original Super Mario Bros for example as one of the best games ever made.

02.) Despite it influencing a lot, there's actually not much that's exactly like RE4. Dead Space and Gears of War both took direct inspiration from it, and some may prefer them for their personal taste, but neither really has that exact charm RE4 has, they have differing charms. Hell, even RE5 despite following RE4's blueprint in ways is quite different due to huge changes in the system to make it co-op focused and quite different level design/atmosphere/pacing and some parts of the game removed and others added from RE4's formula. Frankly there hasn't been a game since RE4 which has strictly felt like RE4 to me, so for people who find the appeal in elements of RE4 it still hasn't been topped in all the areas it excelled it can how it brought them together. That's not to say there's not been any age to the product, I know many are used to modern control schemes so that's usually one of the biggest hurdles, but it's aged relatively fine.

03.) Frankly I can hardly think of any campaign game that has as much consistent variety and pacing quality as RE4. And I think that's part of what's made it stick around so long with such positive reception overall, the game is quite long for the sort of game it is yet it is paced extremely well and utilizes well designed scenarios. Not all scenarios will be to everyone's liking, but there's quite a few in there and all of them bring unique twists to each encounter and it continually builds on itself. There's very few games that have the sort of pacing and variety design that RE4 has, and it even helps against potential frustration having a scaling difficulty as you play, making skilled players get by with harder challenges and yet more potential reward to upgrade themselves in how they see fit, while also letting newbies get into it and not too frustrated.

There's more touches, but frankly it's an example of a game that mastered what it was trying to be, so that's why it's so well regarded. That said, not everyone likes what it was trying to be, and not everyone is happy that RE4 was part of the RE franchise, but that's perfectly fine and even expected really.

It's a great game that ruined the whole series.

The problem was not that 5 and, ugh, 6 tried to be 4, it is that they took every possible wrong lesson from it.

An actual RE4 sequel would be godsend, but I'm not sure there's enough talent at Capcpom to do it.

At least 7 is excellent, aping REmake and all.

As a RE fan I dislike RE from a story aspect. You get a setup, and the ending. None of which are related to the rest of the plot despite there being a pretty big time gap between it and the last game before it. At the very last 3 seconds they say "Oh hey Wesker is involved" .... It was super disappointing in that regard. It was also the start of the incredible cheesyness in the franchise. It was always cheesy in some ways but kartwheeling through laser fences, giant little person statues, a secret catilian style cult....

In terms of a game its great, I'll never knock it for that, but it went from self aware/parody in the first game, to taking itself serious in 2 - Code Veronica, then completely cartoon shenanigans in 4.

I like RE4 but its the worst story out of the bunch.

I actually did like it despite not being a fan of "running around and shooting with guns" games. So it's a special game to me even though I wouldn't put it in a personal top 100 list.

But of course there's lots of people who don't like it, simply because they don't like the genre OR scary/tense games (which many would find it to be).

I loved it when it came out, but I have no real desire to play it ever again. The ones on PSX never looked particularly fun or scary to me. And if they're anything like REmake, then the "survival" aspect is completely overblown considering that game gives you more than enough ammo to annihilate everything in the mansion.

I don't think you understand what cheesiness is. RE5 and especially RE6 take themselves very, very seriously.

And if we're going to blame a game, then Code Veronica is clearly the point where we went from cheesy zombie stories to dumb anime plots with Matrix characters and shit.

i dont like it much. played it on GC around release. Its got character and i like the design and world building.

But It wasnt really a horror game, i didnt like the close over the shoulder third person camera (same reason i dont like Gears) and i didnt like the stop start nature of the gunplay.

i see why alot of people like it but its just not for me.

It's one of the best and most innovative games ever made, popularising the now commonplace dudebro over the shoulder camera, which is now grossly overused and commonly misused. It managed to mimic tank control movement pretty well (no shooting + walking, no strafing, no 180 degree camera pan) but most of the reason why it's so good is because it takes pages from MGS1 without ripping it off. Stuff like the codec screens with Hunnigan, dialogue direction, the pacing and set pieces are similar to MGS1 and I've seen nobody else make the same comparisons for some reason. I also love the Tetris inventory, a lost feature in future RE games.

I don't hate it or anything but it's one of my least favorite RE's. I personally enjoyed 5 more.

I don't really like it. It's ok but only a bit above average.

However I hate Leon. Hated him in two hate him more in 4.

It ruined resident evil imho making it an action game rather than a horror one.

Tldr. Leon sucks, not resident evil, too shooty

Me. I really, REALLY disliked it. It is probably the only one game that I hate I think.
Hate that dumb camera, hate that dumb escort mission, hate the overall gameplay.
I loved the tank controls on Resident Evil (and other Survival Horror games) so much but after RE4 we didn't have it anymore.
It's probably my biggest dissapointment with videogames, overall.

But these days to be honest I got over it. I just don't like the franchise anymore but respect the people that liked the new direction. It isn't for me, the last one I played was RE5 I think.

Want to play some day the HD versions of RE Zero e REmake. (Played REmake on GC and loved it).

Resident Evil 4 is the greatest piece of interactive media ever made.

- The pacing is fantastic and peerless
- The weapons are awesome
- The attache case management could be a mini game of its own, it's that fun
- Best merchant in video games. (But I don't know, Zelda has some pretty awesome merchants/sellers/business people... Ravio and Malo immediately come to mind. Specially Malo, that mofo is a keen entrepreneur. But I digress...)
- Fantastic boss fights
- Extremely satisfying gunplay and melee combat
- Perfectly designed encounters
- Replay value galore -- Mercenaries, Ada modes, etc

If they bring RE4 to the Switch, I will buy a Switch, right there on the spot (if I don't already own one by then). Mark my words.

I've tried to play through it several times, but I can never finish. The game drags on too long for what it is and the story deviates too far from what interested me in the earlier games. Leon went from being my favorite character in the series to my least favorite. For all the hate that RE5's boulder punching gets, there's some pretty ridiculous shit going on in 4.

I understand why it's so loved, and I can appreciate its merits, but I just never got it.

I don't dislike it but it's not even in my top 5 favorite RE titles.

The story really ruined it for me.

Even after 13 years, I've yet to read any good analysis on why RE4 isn't a good game. Almost all of the few negative comments out there come down to personal taste rather than an objective look at why the game has technical flaws.

Even today I'm just astounded at what RE4 does in just one game. Not only is it incredibly entertaining, but it's well rounded with strong pacing and variety. It rewards you for exploring, it rewards you for item management, and it rewards you for being tactical. All under an amazingly balanced system. It's remarkable how no one has really been able to bring the same breadth to a single game. Super Mario Odyssey might be the only other game to really do it for me.

It's easily the Evil Dead 2 problem (which is, of course, the only Evil Dead movie that I hate).

It's dated and the story is hilariously ridiculous. But the texture project is going to do wonders for its atmosphere.

I don't think it's a terrible game, I just don't like it as an RE game.

I loved RE1 and 2 for the horror elements, the same way I loved the Silent Hill series. I came for the atmosphere, the stories, and the suspense.

RE4 took that aspect and put action ahead of the horror elements and shifted the series after it toward a more ham fisted action game with some horror elements.

That's why I absolutely loved RE7, it gave us back that more survival horror aspect that had been put on the backburner in the series following RE4.

IDK man this is looking at things from a really positive angle lol. With the new texture project I can buy the realism a little more, and I think my own immersion in the game will be much improved. The encounters are good, the replay is great, and the weapons are pretty cool. It's definitely a stand out game, but the story is way over the top and while not distracting too much it's a bit overkill. The horror elements are decent, but it's definitely B-tier action written all over it. Which probably adds to its vibe for many.

Like I said I will properly reevaluate it when the texture project is done. I think it will be amazing.

Played it for the first time about a year ago on my GameCube. I thought the game was really good for when it was released. But then I rescued that little girl and it turned into an escort section. I haven't touched it since but I should probably finish it.

It wasn't too bad, there were just new games coming out and I just couldn't put anymore time into it

I hate RE7 because it is a First Person game , but I didn't once said That it is a bad game simply because I didn't play it to say that

It's the only non-platformer that last 10+ hours where I can remember every single room/encounter/collectible in the game from memory.

So yeah, I like it a lot.

If you're caring about "getting immersed" and "buying the realism" then your priorities are messed up. It's a ridiculously goofy game and it should be appreciated as such.

I never got into it tbh, I remember putting it down fairly quickly due to it not feeling like the previous entries.

In my mind Resident Evil ended at Nemesis. As a kid I thought the end of that game served as a pretty definitive ending to the saga, and it's never really peaked my interest since.

It's a decent game, but trying to go back and play it years later was a slog for me and overall I just felt the game was overrated.

I was never a fan of the original RE games, and I tried RE4 a couple of times because of the praise and couldn't get into it. It's ugly with annoying controls, I'd rather play something else.

This is the by far the lamest way to go about criticism, so I don't even bother. No such thing as an "objective look" and technical flaws are the most uninteresting of them all.

Why Resident Evil 4 doesn't work for me is infinitely more interesting to me than looking for something quantitative that is "objectively flawed". Not even sure how you'd even try to do that for anything (or why you'd want to in the first place).

Whether it's Resident Evil or not didn't matter to me (as I only played edit: two and CV), but whilst I don't remember anything specific outside of I just wasn't having fun, I didn't like it.

But so what? You enjoyed it, who cares if others agree with you or not, get over it.

Someone should make this thread for Ocarina of Time.

While I don't think it's bad, it's my least favorite 3D Zelda and it'd be interesting to see if anyone else thinks the same way

I couldn't get into it, but personally I'm not a huge fan of shooty type games to start with - more of a puzzle/adventure kinda guy. Game seemed really well done, but it just wasn't my sort of thing.
