Andrew Yang feels that it's "shameful" and greedy that WWE mistreats workers while being worth billions - POST Wrestling | WWE AEW NXT NJPW Podcasts, News, Reviews

Former Presidential candidate Andrew Yang voiced his thoughts on WWE's labor laws and what he hopes to change if Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are elected in November.

And the company worth's 3.3 billion and so if your company's worth 3.3 billion and you're mistreating workers, I mean that's just shameful. Really it's shameful. There was a point in the distant past where you could've made a legitimate argument based upon cost but now you can't. Now it's just plain f*cking greed… so we can all see it, fans know. So it's one reason why a lot of people want there to be fair treatment of wrestlers and genuine competition in the market."

This is kind of a weird obsession for him... like why not be the champion of Uber and Lyft drivers and not pro fucking wrestling?

Vince is just Donald Trump x PT Barnum. Ya gotta remember the guy continued a live event even though a man died in the ring and his dry blood was still on the canvas.

He's right. It's scab TV... like reality TV. It was designed specifically to circumvent actors' and writers' unions, and athlete player associations, by taking only the benefits and audience of both drama and sports while being a fake product that is a shifty amalgam of both.

Weird obsession? He's talked about Uber/Lyft too. He's talks about tons of things.

Some of you have issues understanding that you can advocate for something while it not diminishing your advocacy for something else. His whole platform was a form of UBI for everyone.

Like most WWE wrestlers make way over six figures just with terrible benefits, this is a weird fight, even AEW has no benefits either for the wrestlers and there the more "progressive" company. You think he would go after companies abusing part timers making minimum wage with no benefits, instead of trying to help pretty much the wrestlers making 100k up to a million. Yang is doing anything to get some sort of fanbase and media time.

Listen as cool as it is to hear this from someone as prominent as Andrew Yang, it's on the collective of wrestlers within WWE to truly enact change. Let's face it, a majority of those that work there are looking for their own self interest and don't want to rock the boat or risk being ostracized for bringing up such things like a union or health insurance.

And it's not just WWE, Tony Khan himself said Jon Moxley (AEW's current champion) is covered by his wife's (recent WWE departure Renee Paquette) insurance. If that doesn't tell you it's a topic they don't want to discuss or take on as well, then idk what to tell you. It's an industry that just thinks unionization as some sort of taboo.

Meanwhile the actors and professional athletes on either side of their time block have decades of history of collective bargaining.

These problems have been addressed and solved already but American "professional" wrestling finds loopholes in terminology, and we allow that.

Yo this is a take.

Wanting pro wrestlers who fall on their backs for a living getting health insurance is some kind of weird obsession.
Wtf is this shit? Yeah they should get health insurance their job is really fucking dangerous and they generate a lot of revenue. Vince McMahon is a cesspool of a human being and anyone who calls out his bullshit is right on the money.

Workers need to be treated better in general in this country, I don't see why advocating for worker rights should stop at professional wrestling. And I don't even like/watch this crap!

The part timers making minimum wage with no benefits aren't putting their bodies and livelihoods on the line every time they go to work. Also, AEW has partnerships with other wrestling organizations, allows their talent to make money off of their AEW fame, and gives their signed wrestlers plenty of time off to rest their bodies. Finally, it is possible to care about both situations to ensure everyone gets health benefits.

I'm all for Yang or anyone in a government position going hard after WWE and especially Vince. That piece of shit should have been locked up long ago for the shit he's gotten away with, and the cover ups he's still managing today. And lets not forget that WWE was sitting on half a billion dollars stashed away for disasters, had record profits, and still fired wrestlers and staff just to save a measly $700k a year.

Fuck Vince, and fuck WWE. They are a trash company, and no one should be supporting them at this point.

I'm talking down on how ludicrous the post I was quoting comes off as. Guess I forgot the /s because I usually don't do sarcasm much in Era.

First, this assume he's never talked about the gig economy. He has. That's part of the "War on normal people" he talks about. This is the precariat Yang wrote an entire book about. Second, there's enough of a spotlight on that but not enough of a light on professional wrestling and how it's playing the same game despite people not even realizing it.

How many actually know that people employed by the largest professional wrestling company on earth, a company that has had a record year and still chose to lay off people, are simultaneously employees but classified as independent contractors who have to pay for their own health care?

I think flights are the only thing WWE pays for. They don't pay for rental cars, hotels, food, insurance, etc.

Some people like this because they think they get paid more and then go as cheaply as possible on stuff like sharing hotel rooms and cars.

Thing is, this company makes enough money that everyone there is underpaid already, and should have all that stuff covered.

DGAF about wrestling and never was big on Yang, but calling him out in this moment like he never focused on the problems facing average workers before, saying he shouldn't be commenting on a wealthy industry is absolutely stupid.

Wrestlers live maimed, die young, and generally have to beg for scraps from WWE after their primes.

This is something that isn't immediately apparent to someone who doesn't follow wrestling and I'm glad he's shining some light on the situation.

That's the problem how do you get to a bunch of people who all believe in this Qanon garbage, and other conspiracy theories to go "Hey lets all unite and tell Vince/Tony that if he wants us to wrestle, we need actual healthcare, and some kind of CBA to make sure that we dont have to go to convention after convention signing autographs to make sure we can afford all of the medical care we are going to need because we destroyed our bodies."
