It is a bit of a mess. I know what console does what but I still have to double check I'm talking about the right sku or even have a moment where I draw a blank.

Product naming shouldn't have that ambiguity or confusion in them.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but...isn't it kinda their job to be knowledgeable about the products they are selling? If everybody knew exactly what they want to buy, they would just get it from Amazon, or any other major retailer.

Also, these comments still fail to explain how it is somehow possible to sell stuff like smartphones or cars (both of which frequently have several similar SKUs) without the sky falling.

I mean, no? The job of gamestop employees is to sell Funkos, they're not paid to study console specs outside of their office hours. Even if it was, it doesn't mean I can't feel bad for how annoying I imagine some customer conversations about the xbox series consoles are going to be.

Casual market will not care about this. The new Xbox Series X and S will sell well. It does not take much to look up what the new consoles are. I've talked to my casual friends who game and get the occasional fifa and madden and they are hyped for the new Xboxes.

Let's try this with a playstation equivalent...

The discless PS5 will not run PS4 Pro enhanced versions of backwards compatible games, but will instead run PS4 Slim versions of PS4 and PS3 titles.

It's just a badly constructed sentence.

Honestly, Microsoft's naming scheme for the XBox line has always been weird and it's not going to get any better.

What happens with the inevitable smaller system?

Xbox Series XS?

WHY?

I must confess I have been perennially confused by the Xbox console titles and have trouble keeping them straight in my mind.

I feel like growing up kids usually knew what they wanted? Like if I wanted a console, I knew which one it was and told my parents to get that one. I can't think of any time I just told my parents "I want a video game console" and put the choice in their hands. This seems pretty standard for people who got game consoles as gifts growing up.

I really think the "Xbox Series stuff is Wii U all over again!" is very disingenuous concern trolling. The Wii U failed because no one really wanted it, it didn't have anything worthwhile and the Wii name itself was no longer a good thing by the time it was out. Notice how there was little to no confusion with the 3DS and 2DS line... despite having equally confusing names. Xbox as a brand has far more staying power than the Wii brand. They will be just fine this holiday.

Reminds me of that one twitter thread where everyone was so confused about Series X, S and One S and X and the horrible nightmare retail were going to have.

...whilst simultaneously ignoring the fact the One S and One X will no longer be available at retail

I'm dreading the day when my friends call me to explain this shit to them because their son wants a Xbox.

It's dumb. The best thing Microsoft can do is make sure all Xbox Ones go out of production ASAP. But yeah, I wish they would've named it better.

The mid gen refresh of the S will be the more powerful Xbox Series SX and the mid gen refresh of the X will be the smaller form factor Xbox Series XS and they will also have the Xbox Series XX for the new most powerful big boi on the market.

They are all out to get you. They have always been out to get YOU. Finally as we approach the dawn of a new console generation the veil is being removed and the truth is revealed. The whole world colluded and decided to band against xbox and their fans and concern troll. It is not YOU being paranoid! It is not YOU being the flatearther equivalent in here!

I get what you're going for but the discless ps5 will play ps4 Pro enhanced games and ps4 enhanced games so I don't that it works

I would imagine the whole purpose of the Series S/X name is because in the future they will have an Xbox Series S2 and an Xbox Series X2. If they don't do that, then this naming convention is stupid. If they do that, then this naming convention was a necessary reboot.

Goddamn I'm glad I don't work at GameStop anymore. Explaining the differences between the core and standard models of the 360, the DSi versus the DS Lite, and even the 20 GB and 60 GB PS3's was quite a lot (especially later on when 80 GB models started stripping away backwards compatibility) . Lol

All the parent will ask or care about is that it plays the games their kid already has too. They're not going to be fussing the details, come on. Even then, all a game store employee has to say is that the old games will look prettier on the Series X 🙈

These people must have a lot of difficulty buying phones, or tablets, or just about any piece of consumer electronics that doesn't have a name that goes up by one digit each time a new one comes out.

I know what it means but always need to take a second look to be sure what it means.

Its not obvious and can lead to confusion. Of course people here would think this not a big deal but not everyone reads daily gaming forums and news.

Like even retailers get the name of the consoles wrong.

How to explain this to a casual audience easily.

"The Xbox Series S does not run use Xbox One X enhancements for backwards compatible games."

that's still a question that will almost never have to be answered because most people aren't concerned about that. The few who are will likely be enthusiasts who will understand even the wordier IGN tweet.

But era will continue to pretend that retailers has to submit a 5 page essay to their customers for clarification.

Alright, here's the lesson.

You know what an Xbox is, right? It's Microsofts video game company and they have a family of consoles called Xbox, welcome to 20 years ago.

Xbox One is the name of their current gen hardware, comes in two flavors: Xbox One S and Xbox One X.

Their nextgen console comes in two favors as well: Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X

S = Baseline
X = More powerful console

If you've been able to follow Xbox One S & Xbox One X thus far over the years, the naming scheme is completely logical going forward to those of you with functioning brains. If any of this is confusing, please reread and maybe grab a piece of paper and take note with your crayons.

None of this shit matters to casual buyers. The One family of systems will be gone within a year. Yes the naming scheme isn't great but the FUD is tiresome at this point.

You walk into a store next year and there a cheap Xbox and expensive one. Both play the same games. End of story.

I mean, it looks like word salad if you're mindlessly doomscrolling, but it's perfectly cogent and clear if you take a moment to actively read it.
This.
I'm actually having more trouble with understanding what you guys didn't get.
And the name of the new Xbox is also fine. People are not stupid as you think

If staff at a specialist retailer can't be expected to know about the product they are selling, then we probably shouldn't be surprised that fewer and fewer people bother shopping there.

I'm sorry but Microsoft's naming in this generation is the Wii U debacle all over again.

We'd had the grandma thread recently though on this?

Yup, this is what I've been saying. If you need an explainer regarding the names... you've fucked it up. If you are naming with words, a totally different word helps, people can still be confused but you can say no this word is the old one, this word is the new one. Easiest if you go with Numbers. PS1, PS2, etc, nobody is gonna have questions.

But the way Xbox has done it... yeesh.

While the headline was definitely worded in order to intentionally mock Microsoft's recent among conventions, it does still point out how convoluted and confusing said naming conventions are. It started with the Xbox One and it's all been downhill from there. The whole thing was in desperate need of a rebrand for the next generation, but instead, they doubled down on the confusion.

He is confused. The Series S is going to play Xbox One S games without any Xbox One X enhancements. Do I have the wrong facts?

What he's saying is the games will still have enhancements for BC, it will just be in line with One S enhancements, not One X enhancements, which is primarly 4K (hence why he says, "It just won't have 4K).
