Fortnite launched years ago and it still receives updates. Among Us too received updates this year, using this logic there's no reason why it shouldn't qualify.

Also, I would argue Among Us is a far more interesting game due to its simplicity, indie development and reach than Gacha Impact or any other candidate in that category. Its the kind of game that should be celebrated really.

It sort of kind of makes sense because Among Us was a completely hidden phenomena before 2020. It deserved recognition for taking the world by storm and making such an unquestionable impact on gaming as a whole this year. But they could have given it its own honorary distinction instead of crowding out games that actually released this year.

Just again proves again that TGA is more about hype whoa moments than being a legitimate awards program.

Game awards is not exclusive to games released on that same year. Fortnite was also mentioned in one of the nominations and the game is from late 2017.

I mean personally I think it's weird because the game awards already have an award designed for games that came out in previous years and are still relevant now in best ongoing game and among us wasn't even nominated for that one

A game, where 99.99% of all the people who have ever played the game played it in 2020 and never knew it existed before 2020, won awards in 2020. Its fine.

I wouldn't put it my personal list (I really try my hardest to stick to games released that year) but it'd also be weird for an awards show in 2020 to not recognise Among Us.

Like with Fortnite (which came out the year prior to when it completely blew up and won loads of awards), I think Among Us is an exceptional case.

I mean I'm really happy for the among us team, it's really deserved but at the same time if Geoff really wants this to be like the Oscars of video games with all his celebrity appearings then he should follow the same rules, never saw a movie released 2 years ago win something for the same year.

smh that people are salty that the billion-dollar gacha franchise got snubbed by a small Indie Team.

Among us is a 2020 game, regardless of when it released. Can anyone else point to a game that would be eligible? All the previous "what if" games (like Fortnite, Xenoblade2, LOU2, etc.) were successes and widely known games in their release year.

The category wasn't best xyz game released in 2020, it was best game in 2020.

I didn't like it.

Then I saw their very human reactions for being recognized for what they made and was like "fuck it, give it to em, it's not that deep."

I have never played this game and I probably never will. But even I can see that this game represents 2020 more than any game that released this year. It is not a game from 2020, but a game for 2020. Without the special circumstances imposed by the pandemic this game would have stayed in obscurity but here we are. Among us deserves to win the big overall GOTY awards, not just category awards. This game is 2020.

Happy for them.

Dev team seems like genuinely nice people and their game, while releasing in 2018.. like, really, who gives a shit? Sure it's odd, but it's also not odd, these guys don't have double digit million $$$$ marketing campaigns like all of the other games in their category. That shit ain't fair either.

era lets people vote for old games with extremely minor updates that get ported to their system of choice, not hugely different.

there's no reason to put much weight into any GOTY awards, regardless of how strict or lenient they are.

Look at the reaction of the dev team. Look at them. If you can look at that group of four people who barely managed to get through BOTH speeches without crying because they just couldn't believe they were there, and still go "But it released in 2018" then there's really nothing anyone can say to convince you.

That game didn't exist to anyone until THIS YEAR. It blew up, and it deserved it's spot, and it deserved those awards. Good for them, and I hope they turn it into an even bigger success next year.
Basically how i feel

No problem with it's eligibility for this year's awards. I'm fine with Among Us winning Best Multiplayer. Disagree with its win in the mobile category. The controls are pretty bad, and the chat system is really a poor way to actually discuss and vote people out on it. The game is much, much better on PC.

I had never heard of the game until a few months ago so I'm okay with it. Congrats to them!

I think nothing of it. It's not one of the awards that float around the "Game of The Year" zone, so I don't think it matters.

Yeah pretty much this. It isn't like the game was known about before and just became popular again this year - this was it's first year of having any form of attention from media and critics and almost any from players. Well deserved.

I think that disqualifying games from certain awards based on their initial release seems silly. It's not like every single game (especially smaller ones) immediately explode in popularity. It's also not like there's some objective criteria that you need to meet for that award category.

I say good on that team. They deserve the acknowledgement.

I think Among Us is a fair exception. It's not like they decided to run Fortnite for GOTY in 2020. Basically no one knew this game existed until this year, so I think it's fine.

I think the bigger problem is that these awards are run by people who are very console-centric that look down on mobile games and the nominees reflect that with:
A game from 2018 that became popular this year due to PC streamers
A mobile game that became popular on PC for being like a "real game, not a mobile game"
Spin-off from Nintendo
Spin-off from Activision
Spin-off from Riot Games

A friend of mine works at a mobile game review site and he was really annoyed at how there are tons of mobile games released each year that are worthy of recognition, but the console-centric gaming press treats the whole medium like the ghetto.

I don't think anyone will have a problem with it if there are no repeats.

What really bothered me was street fighter being indicated this year again.

Though a tiny bit weird because of it not reaching any large relevance till this year Among Us is the exception to the rule.

I know the Oscars generally give awards for two year old movies during their yearly awards show.

I'm happy for the developers, but this doesn't make much sense to me. Other than a "how do you do, fellow kids" type of thing.

Makes sense to me and it was a deserved victory. No one had head of it before this year -- it was an extremely indie release. Hades had an early access release back in 2018 as well and I don't see any suggestion it should not be GOTY eligible (for good reason).

I think it's great. It's less about when the game actually releases and more about when it reaches it peak. See all the games that launch in terrible states and then by the next calendar year they play excellent.

I think that, culturally, this is GOTY and should have been nommed for it but I'm glad they allowed it to be in some categories. It really just came alive this year.

It could've released in 2015 and it would still deserve it over Animal Crossing.

Jokes aside, I they earned it since it sounds like they put in a huge effort this year. It may as well have come out this year.

And if Naughty Dog can pick up a "Best Direction" award, than I think it fair Among Us can earn an award too for resurrecting their game with some of the strongest case of Viagra I've ever seen.

Yeah, that's one of the issues I brought up yet Era is the same so :/ I think Genshin makes sense as a nominee for sure though.

Think of it as the Grammy rule.

The album was nominated for a award this year despite coming out almost 2 years ago.

All y'all comparing an indie game that sold 12 copies to like, a AAA or first party marketed game that sold millions already are just weird.

Well, I'm not a fan of having games released outside of the window of consideration being eligible for awards. It shouldn't matter that Among Us only became popular in 2020. It's a game from 2018.

Again, a very Ameri-/Euro-centric and console-centric viewpoint. It hit over 1 million downloads early in 2019 after popularity in the Korean and Brazil markets. That's not really against anyone in North America or Western Europe, but it would be good to get stronger weight to outlets outside the bubble that the western games press and audience is stuck in.

The mobile game of the year nominations are sort of a joke. It's a bunch of names tied to existing IP for the most part because that's all that people at TGA know.

It's pretty silly in the same way people wanted Hollow Knight to get GOTY nods when it came out on Switch a year later.

That said, I can't say I'm surprised by the lack of consistency in the game awards. You can look at Hades as another weird example to be honest. PUBG was nominated for GOTY back in 2017 before it was out of early access. Just seems odd you can get nominated in early access and after full release although I at least prefer the latter.

It also begs the question of why do they need a cut off date for games that can be nominated when games from previous years can be nominated anyway.

I think it's dumb. Just give GOTY to Bloodborne every year since it's so good (note this is me playing off what people here say).
