The man is charisma incarnate. No wonder the doc wants in his pants. I want in his pants.

The entire cast is amazing though. You'd think a know-it-all android like Data would be annoying and insufferable, but dude is great at selling it. I love the emphasis on empathy (literally embodied by counselor Troi) and learning, trying to understand things and actively avoiding violence unless there's no recourse. I love that the Enterprise isn't framed as an invincible warship, and that humanity's nature and past are continually examined either through direct reference or by proxy through the beings they encounter. And I also love that dudes wear dress uniforms as a matter of choice

Fuck yeah. This show is quality stuff. The first two episodes put that question in my head of whether humanity has truly overcome its past like the crew insists.

Aside from the theatre stuff, I don't think I've seen him in him much, X-Men, Star Trek, probably good in theatre which I haven't seen.

He is great as Picard though.

As much as I love modern television, they just don't make shows like old school Star Trek anymore.

Wow. If you're into season 1, you're going to be absolutely consumed by seasons 3-7 and most of DS9.

Fans of the franchise always point to DS9 as the pinnacle of Star Trek, but I disagree.

TNG is my comfort show where people actually work together to solve problems and are professional. That's the future I would like to see. DS9 is just people being assholes and shooting at each other.

What's your second favorite Patrick Stewart performance?

When he performed as Prospero in "The Tempest" on Broadway in 1995 (one of my friends parents were able to video record footage during their trip to NYC in the 1990's, including seeing that run of the Shakespeare play during their trip). From what I've seen, it's a fascinating take on the character.

And in case you weren't already aware of the story, some big entertainment magazine of the day had in their TNG preview article described Stewart as an "unknown British Shakespearean actor." Brent Spiner was so amused by this that he had a "Beware: Unknown British Shakespearean Actor" sign made and taped to Stewart's trailer door.

Easily the best Captain of any federation fleet. I would trust Picard and follow him to the depths of abyss. Wouldnt do the same for Kirk, Sisqo or anyone else.

The episode where he has to defend Data in court is fantastic acting!!
Measure of a Man. Easily a top 3 trek episode.
Cpt Picard said:
Now, the decision you reach here today will determine how we will regard this -- creation of our genius. It will reveal the kind of a people we are, what he is destined to be; it will reach far beyond this courtroom and this -- one android. It could significantly redefine the boundaries of personal liberty and freedom; expanding them for some -- savagely curtailing them for others. Are you prepared to condemn him and all who come after him, to servitude and slavery? Your Honor, Starfleet was founded to seek out new life; well, there it sits.; Waiting.

Oh man, I'd love to see that, Tempest is an excellent play and he definitely has the gravitas for Prospero. (Note I've only read it, I've never seen any actual productions of it)

I saw this again for the first time in 20 years just a few weeks ago and this speech stands its ground as compelling and provoking.

I recommend giving this video a watch, it discusses the decision making behind the inclusion of the skant-uniform extras in season 1:

This was a fantastic watch, thank you for this

TNG is the top Star Trek and it's not even close. Much of that is due to the Jean Luc Picard.

Over time been making my way through TNG during Covid. Planning out a big thread on TNG when I've finished (and especially the health and safety blackhole that is the Enterprise D).

Picard is absolutely the best. The man is filled with charm and poise but at the same times as many believable and relatable faults as any of us.

There are moments where he swallows his pride and immediate desires to do the right thing and all I can think is. "Wow, I probably wouldnt have done that in the same scenario, but I wish I was the sort of person who would have."

People love Measure of a Man but Drumhead is an underrated persinal standout for me.

Both TNG and DS9 portray leadership so damn well. I know it's dramatized, but I wish real life leadership imitated these guys (Picard/Sisko) just a little bit. But, yeah, I loved Picard as a kid growing up. I honestly think the series would be a great show for children to watch.

Drumhead doesn't get mentioned enough, IMO. It has so many good moments. The one with Worf at the end is amazing.

Serious respect for jumping in at S1 in 2021, it's not the best.
You're in for a treat from S2/S3 onwards.

If you're into Picard and Patrick Stewart though, S1 isn't bad at all. It has a lot of the range he displays throughout the series, and Picard pretty much comes out fully formed as a character from the first episode. It's everyone around him who grows into their roles as the series goes on, but I'd argue that by the end of season 2, everyone is firing on all cylinders.
