I always avoided GTA5 because I felt disappointed that GTA5 had not expansions, but also had a mode more or less forcing the player to grind or to use real money to buy a virtual currency. Is this something that annoyed you? I always stayed away from this game because of this, as weird as it seems. Now with that Casino, I feel a bit triggered, even though it is not exactly a money game.

it's fun, no one is forcing you to do anything. making money in-game isn't hard at all provided you're not just playing freemode but doing races, heists, adversary modes etc

maybe you should give it a shot instead of reading era headlines, really ain't that deep

I avoided the series in general because I found it repulsive and amoral, among other things.

Oh and lacking any taste whatsoever.

No, you're in the vast majority. It's known for being a massive clusterfuck, but still has its fans due to the gameplay, similar to the NBA 2K series.

A lot of R* apologizing is about to come your way

It's pretty gross. I enjoyed the base game throroughly and the heists we're good fun and somewhat rewarding. And then everything went downhill.

I've no idea what it's like.......I put my time into the single player......finished it.....uninstalled it.....and have not touched it since.
It was ok.....but honestly I enjoyed GTA IV more,Niko was great.
Did the same thing with RDR2.

GTA V/Online was a pretty big disappointment for me personally, as someone who loved the direction of IV and IV's multiplayer suite and who has zero interest in the MMO-like nature of GTA:O. But it's clear that they've got an infinite money generator with GTA Online, so I don't see the series ever returning to the kind of multiplayer direction of IV. (R.I.P. the pure, simple fun of Cops 'N Crooks, Chopper Vs. Chopper)

I do think it's pretty funny that they called their predatory monetization model "Shark Cards" though. That's very Rockstar.

The second I saw them openly calling their most expensive currency pack "Whale Shark Card" I found the product repulsive, lord knows how openly mocking those they're trying to prey on elicited only mild shrugs instead of a shitstorm.

Given how popular it is with general audiences, it's pretty safe to say you're in the minority.

Hasn't GTA V stayed in the Top 10 sales each month for years now? That's all the answer you need.

Not my bag*, but if people are having fun I don't see the problem.

* I have seen some YT vids of online role-playing servers that admittedly do look incredible.

That is a weird stance to have.

"I wanted to play it but it has no DLC". Wtf? Just play the base game and avoid online. No one forces you to play it. GTA Online has definitely problems, but I don't understand why mix it with its single player.

Rockstar nixing the planned single-player expansions and then repurposing them for GTA Online is some bullshit and it's why if you choose to play GTA Online, I recommend finding some hackers to drop money on you, both a "fuck you" to their business model and to see how shallow the content is once you don't have to grind for it.

GTA V is awesome my firm GOTY in 2013. GTA Online is fucking garbage and it's an absolute disgrace that single player DLC died for this. GTA IV multiplayer might have been barebones, but it was not scummy and was simple fun.

I try not to get too worked up over monetization schemes though I find a lot of mobile game stuff and Ultimate Team pretty gross.

That said, the new casino in GTA Online feels like a step too far. So yes, that's repulsive.

for me it is part of the issue. Expansions won't bring enough money(well they would have) so let us make a grindy online to encourage the player to spend a lot of money.

OP, our views are in the minority, but I agree with you.
I hate when people say there's so much content etc, but you're basically digitally destitute, homeless and broke unless you grind or spend.

GTA IV online wasn't a grind. You played it. You had fun with it. That was that. GTA V is grindy RPG bullshit and a fine example of everything wrong with modern gaming.

Yes, we are the minority. The majority plays shit like GTAO and FIFA and happily pays real money for fucking nothing.

Last I played was around the PS4 version's launch. Matchmaking was atrocious and I was shocked to find out recently that it hasn't improved.

Wouldn't be surprised if half of R*'s money comes from people getting board of waiting so long for a match that they just buy in game currency.

I played a lot at launch and I don't remember feeling the need to spend any money, so I never did. It's still fun craziness and you can still earn your nice cars and shit without spending a dime. But maybe I'm not the problematic type exploited by stuff like this. *shrug*

Their business model of GTA Online is scummy as hell, without a doubt. But I just don't pay attention to it now, really. I beat the single player and enjoyed that, then quit.

That online looks like a clusterfuck.

I mean, what do you want from a multiplayer open world experience? I can understand if it's not your thing, but the mission design in GTA5O is basically designed for a light grind in order to so any of the substantial things that game has to offer. If it didn't, the game would just be akin to burnout paradise multiplayer missions, which, while fun, are basically a 1 and done experience.

Yes and no? You've touched on several separate topics OP, which are: online, story DLC, monetization and Casino.

In an ideal world we would get the former 2 and call it a day. I personally think the online portion is fun but it takes ages to become wealthy especially if you want high end vehicles. It's grindy, yes - especially solo. Maybe it just doesn't offer instant gratification. Who am I to judge? It's just hard to see this game objectively when you have those shark cards sitting in the store while the playerbase keeps wondering how newer cars became 10 times more expensive than before. I think the Casino DLC and the lack of focus on the story mode are amplifying the negative aspects of the online mode.

I mean, the base game was still 30+ hours with almost unlimited replayability. Yes, I can see why you're frustrated with the online experience, but there's still fun to be had and no one is even forcing you to engage with it. It may not be for you, but it clearly is entertaining for a large group of people. If that's not something you're interested in, no one's forcing you to engage with it and you got a stellar 30+ hour single-player experience.

This so much, i always get the feeling that the people who don't play the game at all or only played once or twice are always the people saying the game is made for you to spend real money or a grind fest.

I have 3 different accounts for gta, all 100+, houses, cars, money, etc. Never felt like i was grinding and never spent a dime on shark cards.

It's as if people are upset that they actually have to play gtao to get the best of what it has to offer.

What? The game is freaking fun... there's A LOT of stuff to do.

I played GTA Online for almost 280 h (PS3, PS4 and PC)

The last time I played GTA Online was in 2017, tho, after losing interest, but the online mode is awesome. Repulsive? unethical? FNO.

I didn't have a problem with GTA Online until the addition of the Casino.

Then again, I've had a couple of family members who's lives were destroyed by a gambling addiction, so it's personal for me on some level.

As someone who bought the game and hasn't even progressed in the singleplayer story since it released on PC, after probably 100 hrs playing online, I actually enjoyed my time with it, especially with friends, and I never had to spend any real life money to have fun. Though that was mostly because hackers gave me money against my will 😉.

Things I remember from GTA IV's freeroam multiplayer:

  • Scouring the map for ammo so the crew could play an informal horde mode at the office building in lower Algonquin.
  • Pubbies peacefully and regularly congregating at the airport and turning it into a stunt park.
  • Searching the subway tunnels for that elusive bastard, the Ratman.
  • Demo derbies at the World's Fair knock-off because the damage modeling was actually worth a shit.
  • Impromptu fight clubs because the hand-to-hand combat was actually worth a shit.
  • A symposium on why objectivism is full of shit at 9 in the morning at that construction site in Broker.
  • Where the Sultan RS spawned and the layout of that abandoned casino in Alderney.
  • Being able to turn off the fucking cops.
  • Being able to easily kick assholes from the session.

I've spent a grand total of $5 playing GTAO off & on for nearly 5 years. You don't have to spend real money...at all... unless you want all the superfluous cosmetic bullshit like yachts, fancy properties, etc..without having to grind $$$.

Dr. Mario's monetization sounds a lot more gross tbh, but it's Nintendo and this is big bad Rockstar who a chunk of ERA has decided to make Gamer Enemy #1.

No, you might be in the majority of people who have an opinion about it. Most people don't like GTA Online because it's a fucking mess, they try it, maybe played Heists when it got released, and had enough due to bugs and the sloppy, shitty design of it. A relatvely much smaller group of players are active, and a tiny percentage of that, probably 0.01% or less have untold riches throwing the entire game world out of balance if you're a new or lapsed player.

I poured a solid amount of time into GTA Online for the first couple years, and I'm deeply critical of how poorly its designed, how it still suffers from the same design flaws it did in the launch period, how it's still just a shitty online experience, and of course, how Rockstar completely fucked up its own in-game economy to milk players for money.

The concept of a GTA Online game is brilliant, it's a concept that just works as a gaming concept, but GTA: Saint's Row Online is just so poorly and disappointingly executed if you care about the GTA series.

GTAO is a ton of fun. There is so much content and Rockstar has done a good job of supporting the online. I agree the lack of single player DLC is disappointing. If you've avoided GTA V because it lacked DLC then you've done yourself a disservice. The game is amazing. It is still one of the best open world games around.

It's funny that the same online model couldn't be applied to RDR successfully, I really hope it means they'll change it up for GTA6.
