Alabama state senators approved a bill this week that would ban hormone therapy, puberty-blockers and surgery for transgender youth under age 19. The legislation, entitled the Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act, passed the state Senate 23-4 on Tuesday, and will now go to the Alabama state House of Representatives for approval. If the legislation passes, violators would be subject to up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to $15,000, CBS News reported.

Alabama state Sen. Shay Shelnutt (R) sponsored the bill, which would also require school staff to tell parents when "a minor's perception that his or her gender is inconsistent with his or her sex" – a move that would basically "out" transgender students. "Children aren't mature enough to make these decisions on surgeries and drugs. The whole point is to protect kids," Shelnutt said, acknowledging that he never has spoken to a transgender youth, according to The Associated Press.

This is beyond bullshit. These bigots have no idea how much damage this will cause. The fact it requires schools to basically tell on the children is completely ridiculous. That isn't their job.

"Children aren't mature enough to make these decisions on surgeries and drugs."
But they don't make the final decision, though...? Surely it's done in coordination with their legal guardian(s), doctors, and mental health professionals.

"Children aren't mature enough to make these decisions" coming from GOP officials and a state that is deeply red in a lot of places sure is saying something. If anything their actions have constantly shown they can't make basic decisions that a mature person would expect, never forget the GOP almost elected Roy fucking Moore in alabama after credibly reports of him going after teenagers in the past. I think I'll take the person going through the situations opinion more than these idiots.

You are wrong about this.

Those bigots know exactly what the fuck they are doing.

All of this is by design.

Cruelty for cruelty's sake.

Cruelty is the point. It always has been and always will be and don't let anyone who supports this tell you otherwise.

Correct. A child already cannot make these decisions alone. Which is why this bill is so inane.

The poster above me said it best:

How can you legally stop an adult (18) from undergoing these procedures?

That's clearly unconstitutional.

I think the worst part is that now teachers are going to be looking for any reason to out kids to their parents, which I assume spreads to suspicion, too. Horrible all around.

So this should actually fail to pass going forward just based on the 18yr old part. That's clearly unconstitutional.

Edit* As mentioned above as well.

It's a given. This law is basically a free pass to discriminate against trans children. It already happens as is, and now with schools legally required to get involved it'll only get worse.

Coming out as trans at a young age in super liberal area is a difficult proposition as it is. In the middle of Alabama? Being outed can be straight up dangerous. All this will do is shut up young trans kids, which I assume is the point of the legislation. "Shut up, stay out of sight, conform, and if you don't we'll out you to your parents which could lead to homelessness, abuse, or any number of things".

It looks even worse than usual if only because - how do they determine that?

So on top of being super transphobic, it also means that all non "standard" gender presentations will get hit too.

Which is pretty consistent with what I expect from Alabama. Poor kids who are born there.

But I bet if they wanted to sign up for the army, they are mature enough to make that decision!

Looking it up it looks like incest is illegal in Alabama, I believed it wasn't based on the posts until I looked it up 😆.

You absolutely can get married as a kid though. Plenty of marrying and sex to go around for kids, but you can't try and figure out who you are in the process. 🤦‍♂️

I have less of an issue with two 16-year-olds getting married versus an underage girl getting married off by her parents to an adult man. (Like the 14-year-old who got married to a 74-year-old.)

...I don't know why I read that as "ban on conversion therapy", knowing that it is Alabama.

The cruelty is the point.

In my experience GID in children is treated via multidisciplinary approach which involves a physician, endocrinologist, behavioral specialist / psychologist, counselor, etc, because it is not taken lightly. There are ethical and medical legal considerations that must be addressed, so the process must be carefully managed by an experienced team. It's no mystery that this group represents among the highest risk for depression and suicide as they are among the most vulnerable.

It is in these politicians' interests to completely gloss over this fact and mischaracterize the entire process, because that ignorance supports their cause. They want to take a medical issue and turn it into a battlefront of their culture war.

Kind of like ... making wearing a fucking mask a political issue.

There are no surgeries being preformed on minors, at all. Regardless of who wants it to happen. Medicine in most cases just means puberty blockers until your 18. Which as far as we know are completely harmless for teenagers.

That sounds like a funny story that ends with "Because of racism"
Considering where I used to live in Alabama had a section called "N-Word Hill" yeah.

Edit - Basically in my short experience in living in central Alabama it's so they can arrest black smokers and "you have more than a pack on ya. That's intent to sell"

Did anyone ever hearded of a kid who made these surgeries? I'm pretty sure this is something they invented to be outraged about.
