So I just started the game, then got hard blocked after a few tutorial-esque sections.

My R3 click is broken on my right joycon. I can't enter the view mode the game needs to progress lol.

Time to find a new controller, or a tool to fix mine. Didn't know that Nintendo used weird Y-shaped screw heads until I checked just now.

Has anyone noticed any crashing during the
Aiba ShovelForge dance?
I'm on the Steam version, it's happened three times in a row :/

Edit:
Crafting the switch instead of the disco ball fixed it
Edit x2:
Managed to get past it by saving each time I progressed, no issues now that I finished the somnium.

Ay, yo, hit my first ending 8 hours in, purple route. Ending: Iris
I am happy I still know barely fucking anything, makes me excited. Hitting your first ending in VLR and 999 were always exciting, because all endings that are not the true ones end in cliffhangers that make the other routes say "come hither, and see what secrets lie within". The only real revelation on this route is the strong implication that Date is the criminal that was dating Iris's mother, and even then, it's but an implication, and there are still many many questions we don't know. There's also the fact that Pewter and Okiura are lovers, that's a pretty big one.
Anyway, I have a theory as to what may have happened at one point. Nobody tell me if I'm correct, I'll find out eventually as I continue playing.
I think the Psync machine can probably swap consciousnesses permanently. Date and Falco probably may have had their consciousnesses swapped, and I think this same event may have taken dates eye, given what we see of Iris at the end of her route.

Also, someone stated that this game was much more brutal than 999 or VLR, and so far, I feel lied to.

I strongly disagree with that tbh. AI does have a few gory moments, but it's child's play in comparison to what 999 did with just text. The descriptions of the blown up corpses in that game made me feel sick to my stomach.
Yeah, I know.
You never SAW anything happen in 999, but god damn, it knew how to get under your skin using combination of audio cues, visual tricks and text.
No game I've played from the writer, whatshisname has managed to replicate it since.

Finished it. This might be simultaneously the most normal and the goriest VN Uchikoshi have created, which is saying something. Also unlike his other works, this VN sticks more closely to a classical detective mystery style story. The mystery is very well constructed so it is a satisfying read.

The running gag where they use porn or underwear to distract guys in firefights is eye rolling.
Geez, I wish this game would take itself a bit more seriously.

I'm getting close to the end I think - finally popped the lock on the green route, which was the first path I wound up on, so good to come full circle lol.

Iris END was better than I expected given folks' reactions to it, but...

My eyes were rolling out of my skull at the action sequence. Weird idol worship combined with endless horny jokes, OK, whatever. On the other hand, everything after Iris' first Somnium was incredibly uncomfortable knowing all the Naix stuff was a delusion (unless there's an endgame "it was really real!" twist coming.) Watching Date and everyone else get swept up in the ideas of someone seriously ill is just, yeah.

Also:

The "you can swap bodies via Psyncing" stuff is giving me a hell of an eyebrow raise. If the true ending winds up involving that timeline chart from VLR except this time it's tracking the real culprit swapping bodies I'm gonna die laughing.

I don't remember if it was mentioned in-game or just in the appendix, but I'm glad they alluded to the idea that psyncing with someone who suffers from delusions and inhabiting those delusions in such a way can make the psyncer susceptible to developing a sort of shared psychosis. Date started believing and agreeing with it all so emphatically that it would have strained my suspension of disbelief otherwise.

Woah, mother fucker.
Green route is good shit, purple is boring af.
Glad I got purple out of the way first.

I just saw Iris get fucking cut in half with an industrial saw. Purple has nothing on this.

If I loved 999 and VLR but absolutely hated the abomination that followed afterwards, will I enjoy this?

Finally bought the game.
I know almost nothing about it... Are the prerelease videos with that virtual girl important?

Yes, this one actually has a coherent and well constructed story with no "complex motives" BS. Not without its flaws, the gameplay is lackluster and there is some dissonance in how seriously the game takes itself but overall still incredibly strong.

Not hugely.

So... you clearly saw the flower pattern knife but nobody is gonna mention it? I know it happens a lot, small nitpick, but it's annoying when characters don't see obvious clues like that when they notices small details way smaller by themselves

So I just finished the Psyncin in the Villain Somnium on the right route and hit the start of Day 4.

Things are certainly getting a bit wild now. So either you can change reality through dreams, or Date is just crazy. I could see either one being the sort of twist that Uchikoshi would go for, so I'll be looking for more evidence in either direction. The fact that Aiba was out while Date found the body could indicate the latter, particularly if Date has some deeper issues that Aiba is addressing normally.

I'm still on my first route, but I'm loving everything that's happening right now. This really does feel like a breath of fresh air for Uchikoshi after so many games about groups of nine people escaping facilities.

It's pointed out in a different route. It does feel silly that it's not pointed out in every route though.

All of the fight sequences in this story are bad.
Like, really bad.
Like, break willing suspension of belief bad.

Uchikoshi should stick to what he can write well, the mystery, because these fight's ain't it chief.

Ah, finished the game over the weekend, that just tells how good it is.
But I have to say it doesn't reach the highs of VLR or 999 for me. It's mostly because 999 and especially VLR are way more emotional and tragic and I am a sucker for that.

Also I agree the somnium parts where good for the narrative, but the gameplay wasn't great and the action sequences kinda sucked.
Anyways looking forward to all the Tookyo games goodness.

Finished the game and wow what an incredible experience. I got to hand to the voice acting talent here, they really pushed what was already excellent character writing to the next level.

Aaaand done.

Fun experience overall. I liked Mizuki's route the best, which seems to be a pretty common reaction. If there's going to be a sequel (which the game doesn't really need, unlike 999 it wraps up with only a few dangling plot threads), I'd want it to focus on Mizuki the idol magnate and on the AI tech. We never really find out where Aiba came from, beyond "Pewter made her." I was half-expecting to learn that she was created from someone's connectome, but we never really met any characters who were a good candidate for that.

On reflection, is Mizuki's route likely a 'bad end' with the story's full context? Pretty much all of the main characters' bodies lived, but... Iris had her eye yanked, which (if I am following the swapping shenanigans correctly) means that So Sejima is currently inhabiting her body, and Iris' mind died in Renju's body. Will be a bit of a nasty shock for all involved when that comes to light.

Twist-wise, I'd guessed at the body-swapping shenanigans, though I wasn't sure of the exact mechanism until the 6-minute-psync reveal occurred. I didn't follow what was going on with #89 and "Falco" until that actual reveal happened. They also got me on the Manaka/Iris body switcheroo; I really should have paid more attention when Hitomi dropped that clue about her classmate.

I was mostly fine with the game's non-horny goofy bits. Aiba's Somnium-entrance gags were usually pretty good, and I'd be lying if I said the final dance number didn't put a smile on my face. The action scenes with everyone diving for porn mags were just lame, though, as was Date's constant commentary. I hoped that last was just a symptom of his off-kilter brain chemistry in Saito's body, but he seems to have kept those traits in the epilogue. It's hard to see the horniness as anything other than an author self-insert, since it seems rather out of character for the Falco described by Iris and Hitomi during the time they knew him.

Aside: I've heard speculation that sci-fi author Robert Heinlein's sex obsession in some of his mid-period books was related to brain issues from a blocked carotid artery, and that after his surgery he reverted to his earlier style. That feels like it would have been good material for one of Uchikoshi's science explainer sequences in the epilogue, if they'd wanted to throw in any explanation at all for Date's 7th-grade level sex obsession.

Just finished this now. So great! Uchikoshi done great on this! I would only say
I didnt fully like most of the battle scenes were ridiculous involving porn mags, etc distracting guards actively trying to kill you in a fight and working, ha. I get thats the kinda the style, but with a pretty serious plot going on I felt it detracted from it in some ways being so unbelievable.
, other than that I felt this has quite a high production value. So many voiced lines, and great voice acting, an emotional roller coaster for a story and the twist(s) we were expecting from Uchikoshi! For people yet to get it, I would say it's a lot closer to the likes of Ace Attorney in some ways, one being how you have multiple places to travel to and need to visit them all, and one being the tone of the game really, there are of course dark moments, but it also has plenty of positive/funny moments similar to what I'd expect in an AA game.
I see some negative points regarding the somniums. I do kinda get them. I guess due to that there is no logic for the most part in these sections, it's really a game of "guess what the developer was thinking" for some aspects. I didn't find they really retracted for me though and found it cool they were all quite different really.

Story questions is anyone knows..
So Saito ripped out eyes when psyncing... but he had two eyes in the new body. How?
Why did he even transfer to Rohan/F in the first place? Just to see if it worked? He pulled out an eye for that?

And the big thing if anyone knows, I need hidden item locations for the plat!
I need:
Day 3: Iris B - Update- Found in top left corner of roon
Day 6: Date B (believe this is in his somnium with mizuki, looked multiple times but not found.) - Update- Found it! On right speaker after examining coat.
Two final hidden items? I guess Day 6: Saito B and the last one?

Third Somnium was just fucking nonsense, I'm sorry. I'm really disappointed in these, and it's hard to believe it came from the same guy as a game like VLR.

Will still press on, but I'm less hot on this now, for sure.

I can only really think of 2, maybe 3 somniums that have good consistent logic that can be puzzled out. They end up being an amazing story line tool but this game is much more VN with light touches over actual escape room puzzles.

Iris has so many, so which one do you mean exactly?
Day6, Date B (Mizuki): Lift up the refrigerator, interact with the pot, check the location on top of the right speaker where the rabbit sat previously
Day 6 Saito B: In the last room it hangs on a hook
The last one will be unlocked once you found all other entries.

Ultimately somiums really don't have much logic to them. The more you accept this, the more fun it'll be to handling them.

They go out of their way a few times to say that an eye can be removed from the socket and re-inserted with no issue as long as the optical cord and blood vessels are not damaged. He ripped out the eye from the body he was leaving because he didn't care but was more gentle with removing and re-inserting for his new body. As far as why he did the first swap, just his impulsive nature I guess? Felt like one of those things that had to be done to justify Date not having his eye but it's not really expanded well enough

The hardest thing about AI is realizing that it's not a puzzle game like VLR or 999. It's an adventure game, it's a visual novel game, but it is *not* a puzzle game. The sooner you can kind of accept that, the more fun you'll have with the game.

At the least, the story is amazing.

Yeah I know they mentioned about reattaching but I thought was only only of they left it attached with damaging nerves/vessels which he clearly did, that and he had to do it for both the psyncer and psycnee, though I guess you didnt see how he did it for others. You would think he wouldn't have done it for his original body anyway.

I'm still in the middle of the game but accepting that the Somnium Parts aren't traditional puzzles has made them more fun for me as well.

They don't make much sense, so it's just a question of trial and error. You try to see which of your actions caused certain reactions and then it becomes a light time management puzzle where you try to shave off as much time as possible through the best use of timies.

Thanks a lot! Wish I saw a bit earlier! I meant the one for Iris from the room with the TV and drawings of animals that show up, but found it now. Going for Saito now for the last, thanks!
