Thanks! I'll play it with a Dualshock 4 too then. Does it have puzzles like 999 and VLR or is it more like Steins;Gate?
There are a few quick time events, and then the somnium sections which are puzzles but only in the sense of 'figure out which item to go to, then pick one of the 4 options.' There's no crazy in depth puzzle segments.

90 minutes in and the game fails to grab my attention. It's too light-hearted so far and a mere whodunnit isn't that interesting. The best part about 999 and VLR was the mysterious setting. Finding out who Zero was never that interesting to me. Rather, I was curious where we were, when we were, what the reason for the nonary game was etc. So far, I also happen to not like a single character.

I hope this gets better. 999 and VLR (and Danganronpa 1) hooked me from minute 1 on.

Hmmm I'm not sure if this is the one for you then honestly. The characters are the characters, and the story DOES get wild and nutty, but it is still trying to solve the murder. I do encourage to keep going and give it a shot because I love it, just being honest above.

I enjoyed parts of the game and the atmosphere, but the things you mention are precisely the things I loved from Uchikoshi's previous works (though I'd say finding out Zero's identity is part of it) which are sorely lacking in AI for the most part. There are perhaps a couple scenes which parallel that feeling of experiencing a revelation.

Just finished it today, really loved most things about it, especially the quality of the writing and the English VA was really remarkable. Was surprised that it ended up being one big storyline, at the beginning I thought it would be more of a Phoenix Wright chapter structure. Really impressive tech and character models as well

On the negative, while I loved the humor, the action sequences and the "look at porn reaction time" took me completely out of the experience. Definitely a sore point that nearly destroyed some characters like Mizuki

It took me 45 min to trial and error my way through #89's somnium file. Beyond awful game design, but on the bright side I'm starting to dig the story a bit more. I started the game yesterday and I'm up to 6 or 7h or so which isn't a bad sign.

edit: Looks like I reached the first ending after 6:50h. Let's see where this goes.

I'm glad you're liking it more! You're hitting my favorite part, which is different endings trickling important info. Makes all of em count.

Someone please tell me that the Mizuki route is the low point of the game. That was boring af. 999 and VLR at their worst were better than AI at its best so far. Pretty disappointing.

The finale has been going on for 2h and no end it sight, PLEASE END. I actually can't stomach anymore of this, so I started browsing on the internet until it's over. The reveal was good, but the game is just pretty boring overall. This was nothing like 999, VLR or Danganronpa 1. Those games kept me up at night, this one put me to sleep at 8 pm.

edit: Now I'm supposed to visit all locations again. Yeah, no thanks. I'm outta here.

Just wrapped this one up.

I thought the beginning of the game was masterful - it really hooked me in. I don't think it was able to maintain that "high" throughout my playthrough but the characters really kept me interested. The way it tied together in the end was pure Uchikoshi; it's why I'll always be there for his games.

That ending dance sequence was the cheesiest, most adorable thing I've ever witnessed. I had tears in my eyes.

Is the Switch performance shored up enough at this point to recommend it over the PS4 if I have a natural preference for getting games on my Switch for convenience's sake? If it affects the experience significantly I don't mind going the PS4 route (especially 'cause it's currently on sale for $30).

I played it on switch and while it was quite bad it a few areas (like when loading a flashback scene, which happens somewhat frequently), it's still a good experience. I'd say it depends on how much you prefer it on switch really. Unless you wanna play it portable sometimes I'd go PS4.

How long is that game? I am reading 7h but hltb says 30h.

Where did you see 7 hours? It's definitely 30-40ish.

I don't know if I even got my first ending that fast, which is what I assume that 7 hour count was for. But by "ending" I do not meant it's a satisfying conclusion to the entire game; it's not a thing where you can just play one route and you'd see that as finishing it. It's a branching story and you need to see all the branches to completion to see the end of the overall story.

You don't need to rewatch much text, because of the flowchart feature that lets you drop back in at any point you've already done, but there is a skip option, yes. Check the options menu.

You do need to replay somniums to get the alternative paths though

As LinkStrikesBack said, you can just hop directly to branching points in the flowchart. You will need to replay the Somnium (3D adventure/puzzle-ish, not VN) section right before the branch to end up on the other side (they're all branches to 2 different paths), but you can pretty quickly skip through all the scenes you've already seen in that.

I bought this game because of the love era seemed to have for it.
It started ok but quickly some of the characters got onnoying to me.

My SO, who isn't at all into gaming and hate anime, was watching me play. She thought the same as me, we both were cringing to all the porno jokes and the BAD action sequences.
Then I arrived to the dancing part and I almost dropped the game for many other reasons.

Era usually are pretty spot on with my tastes so I decided to push on.

oh god I am glad I did.
The story and character got fleshed out and everything had a reason to be. My SO even cried twice and is so engrossed in everyone story that I now can't go on without her next to me.

I am close to the end and I can say that this is up there with danganronpa as my favorite VN. (I didn't played soo much of them but a good amount.)
Thanks era!
can't wait to finish it this weekend.

Only a few hours in. Starting to get slivers of what I loved about zero escape, so very excited to press on--but god do I hate Date's creepiness towards women, particularly Iris. Icks me out so hard.

I'm not sure how I feel about the investigation rooms. They're fun, but have little to no basis in logical decision making.

Another complaint I've had. Felt like
preventing Iris' stabbing was at least SOMEWHAT logical but still a stretch
hoping they continue to feel slightly more logical.

lol, I felt exactly the same as well. I had to put my switch on sleep mode till the next day.

Overall it was a very enjoyably experience for me. Though I hated the QTE like everyone else, I still liked the somnia parts, it wasn't logical but it was imaginable at least. Every somnium has it's own theme, once you understand it, it goes smooth. I only had issues with the last somnium in the annihilation route,
cause in that somnium every damn second counts!

Edit: another note, in the "Appendix" in the files section, at least in some enteries Uchikoshi attempted to explain some potential plot holes.

Can someone tell me what is happening? When I am in somnia, if I stay still, the game steadily drops in framerate, going sub 1 frame per second even, and it gets all visually glitchy like this. The same thing happens when I open the map. It makes the game practically unplayable.

Has anyone else encountered this?

ok, so why is the ending language bug STILL NOT FIXED?!

On top of that, the performance on Switch is so shit. What a fucking joke.

Great story and character. Garbage tier development. Constant sub 20 fps and abandoned the game without any patch for glaring bugs...

Hello, thread bump bc I have a question:

I notice slight stuttering on the Ps4 version while playing through. It happens when Date's car animation on the highway comes up sometimes. Will see it here and there other places.

This happen to any one else?

Played this over the weekend, for most of the weekend, finished one route and got a few locks and bad endings as well. Love it.
Took a while to settle in after the 999 series, but, again, the longer i played the more the characters grew on me. The pervy scenes are absurd at some times and embarrassingly cringey at others, but they mostly feel like coming from a place of fun, absurdist humor and awkwardness, rarely mean, never spiteful, which helped so far. One lgbt character in particular surprised me, when i expected a typical Japanese aggressively bad parody and they turned out to be one of the most likeable characters in the game so far, and not a word was spent about attacking them or their identity. That said, not close to having finished the game, so these impressions might change depending on how other routes deal with this.

The story is takes a while to get to similar levels of excitement as 999 basically had from the beginning, but you can see it's fingerprints all over. Excited to see where this goes.

I beat this game recently on Xbox. It is such a wonderful game with a remarkably interesting, fascinating, engaging story.

I played it close to launch, I got as far as one of the branches, and wasn't sure which point best to go back to to get to a different path. It is very cool. though. The only other interactive novel I've played is a little of the first 999 on the DS. Oh wait, and Hotel Dusk Room 215 also.

Didn't know if I should make a new thread but an LTTP thread felt unfit considering how negative I am about it so far...

Anyway, I hated ZTD and pre-release a lot of things about this game popped all my red flags (pervy protagonist, focus on characters in an Uchikoshi game, non-oppressive atmosphere, etc) so I have been avoiding it for a long time, even though I love his ZE work. I finally decided to give it a try and I am at Day 3 and it's been very, very mid so far. All those red flags were right on the mark, the humour is NOT landing with me at all and I find myself cringing in a way I hardly ever do with japanese games. I also don't really like the cast at all so far. Pervy characters are instantly some of my least favourite characters in any given cast, and Date is an egregious example AND the fucking protagonist. Aiba is more annoying than endearing, and feels like an excuse to keep the plot going. Ota is already insufferable. Pewter and Boss are fine. And I do like Iris and her mother, at least, actually, the esrly scene with them was my favourite in the game so far, loved the atmosphere.

The shitty things is that all the mystery elements that I LOVE in these games are here in some way or another, and there are some moments where I dig it for a scene or two. But the rest has just been... meh. Don't even get me started in the Somnium sections, it's a very whatever gimmick to me from the get go, and apparently they are not executed well overall... But yeah, will force myself through this game, but it's not looking good so far.

I am also not the type to nitpick at plot contrivances but some of the stuff that has happened has already made me want to scream at the game for how dumb it is. It really takes me out of the experience.

The first thing was Boss refusing to talk about the old case because "the perp is already dead so it must be unrelated!". Ok, that is an absolutely stupid thing to do but it could be related with emotional drama or a twist, and it's a cliche, so I forgot about it quickly, but WHY THE FUCK is Mizuki accompanying Date in her imvestigation of her mother's gruesome murder right after she was just healed from muteness. She is fucking 12 years old.
And they find her dad killed in the most traumatising way right after. Just great. That plot point just infuriated me.

Yeah I forgave this for its cringey perv stuff because its plotting is just so brilliantly executed IMO. I also groaned at the whole thing you referred to in that spoiler, but it also felt to me like that was there to be something overt to grab your attention while there are so many other layers happening which you don't notice as a result, kind of a "wag the dog" thing. It felt like a return to form to me after absolutely hating Zero Time Dilemma with every fiber of my being.

Yeah, this might be the biggest turnaround for a negative first impression I have ever gotten out of a game ever. I went through the green route and it went from 10 to 100 as soon as I hit the Somnium for Iris. Really loved it and it has thrown all my initial predictions completely off the roof several times in classic Uchikoshi fashion. I still dislike most of the cast and hate Date but this was awesome, more of this please. Also, I basically started skipping through all the "funny dialogue" when clicking random stuff.

Only dissapointed it locked me out of the ending...

Finished the whole thing. I will keep it brief and say I didn't like this overall but there was a lot to appreciate and love here.

The story is extremely tightly packed written, and the way twists are delivered to the player is excellent. I also was a fan of the Somniums, believe it or not, though I started using a guide for the last ones because I was rushing to the end. And the music was pretty good, not fantastic, but pretty good. And also, this was kind of completely out of the comfort zone for Uchikoshi! So props on him for that.

What killed the experience for me was just the cast and the writing. This might be the cringiest game I have ever played, mostly because the jokes did not land on me, but even then, I just found most of the cast pretty unlikable, and they remained the same until the end. No one really got better in my eyes, only worse, especially Iris, who I really liked at the start and only became more annoying over time. By the end I only really liked Hitomi and Mayumi. And yeah, Date was SO fucking obnoxious, probably my least favourite main character ever.

Consider me in the camp that thinks this game would have been 10 times better if it was taken seriously. This was a game where I was fully invested in the destination, but not at all in the journey the characters took to get there.

Oh well, I am not playing Nirvana for a long time, but I am pretty sure I will automatically enjoy it more with no Date protagonist.

Lowkey mad about the twist ONLY because Falco's design and voice is so much hotter than Date that I would have tolerated this game a lot more if their designs had been switched from the start. This isn't petty.

If I had to rank Uchikoshi experiences it would be

VLR > 999 > (powergap) AI > Ever17 >>>>>>>>>>> ZTD
