But it's shortened to (and written as) Era, which is already a word; thus giving rise to the confusion.

Especially since some people pronounce it like "ear-ah", and others like "errah"; and neither is wrong.

It's like the word data. Ooh - do people who usually pronounce it like "datta" change their pronunciation when saying the name of the Star Trek character?
