Invite a romantic interest over to watch a movie. Wow them with your incredible, delicious air-popped popcorn. Blow their minds.

Oh, and don't forget to buy some Flavacol so that they think you are a popcorn wizard.

Growing up only having popcorn made on a stove. Microwave popcorn have always seemed off to me. They are convenient though, so I understand that part.

I push the popcorn button on the microwave and hope for the best

I moved into a new apartment that had a built in microwave. I used the popcorn button and it popped the popcorn PERFECTLY X_X

Any other time I used the popcorn button (maybe twice in my entire life), it never worked well.

I have a popcorn machine on wheels that I bought years ago at Sam's Club. Pour my butter, oil and kernels and it pops out of the cauldron down below. The plate has holes for kernels, so with bad popped kernels I just use scooper to move it around and it all falls below. I've been experimenting with different kernels to get popcorn that have less of those sharp layers in them (forgot name). Ilast used that Amish kernels from Amazon and that was legit

In college I lived off of microwaved popcorn, peanut butter toast, and chain pizza. A fancy popper was my "dream purchase" when I got out. And I had some fun trying out different kinds of kernels from different popcorn varieties and growers, along with different kinds of salts and oils, but ultimately it became more of a hassle than it was worth.

Nowadays I have a stovetop Whirly Pop that I rarely use. Most of the popcorn I eat is pre-popped. :/

If you are doing microwave popcorn all you have to do is listen to the popping rate. After you do not get a pop for 2-3 seconds that's it pull it out. Works every time.

Eh. The microwave and brand makes a big difference. I find the best thing to do is to use the microwave for all your bag popcorn and then collect all the unpopped salvageable popcorn in a glass. Once you get enough then chuck them all in a pan covered in foil with salt and oil. Poke some holes and keep moving the pan. Once you have popped most of it you are done.

Open the door as soon as three seconds pass with no pop.

You are welcome, peasant.
Your "perfect time" depends entirely upon the specific microwave. Just listen for it to sound done, and it'll be done.

Wow!
I'm not a big popcorn person but as a kid I learned once you go three seconds without hearing a pop your popcorn is ready. My family and I rarely ever had burnt popcorn.

Like these other microwave popcorn masters, I go with the 2-3 second rule of no popping just stop microwaving at that point. You may have a few unpopped kernels but its well before any burnt popcorn. Only way to go, going with the listed times on the packaging is for novices.

I mean it entirely depends on your microwave and even the type of popcorn you're making.

Oh man I always wanted to try a Whirly Pop. Recommend it?

Yea it's a hassle for cleaning up. However I'm only eating popcorn before watching a movie, so setting up food, drinks or whatever is just part of routine while it pops. Like you said, I experiment around with salts, oils etc so for me I don't mind the cleanup. Not like I'm eating it on the regular so :\

Yes, the Whirly Pop is a lot easier to clean and store, but delivers just as good of a final product. It definitely feels like a downgrade in terms of luxury, though -- you have to manually stir the pot (through the crank on the pot handle) and listen for the popping to die down.

I gave away my mini-theater popcorn machine to a community center where it would see more use.

Wow 2 minutes 10 seconds is my perfect time also. I take a paper bag, fill it with just enough kernels, spray oil on it, and microwave for 2:10 (then obviously finish with melted butter and salt). Tastes light and fluffy and better than any stove top or movie theatre popcorn I've ever had.

I voted that you're a peasant and then read the OP and realized you're talking about microwave popcorn and not making it on the stovetop. Filthy animal.

I didn't know there was an exact timing to it. The easiest way is to remove from heat as soon as the intense popping stops.

Making kettle popcorn is a little difficult when you add the sugar in, if you do it too early or too late taste like burnt sugar.

you just gotta listen to the popcorn

ignore its dating advice, and when it shuts up pull it out

This is the true method.

Every bag is different. So good luck lol

I just do the stove-top method. Tastier and more control. On, off, on, off at the very end.

Bagged pop corn you just stop it when the popping starts slowing down since not all microwave have the same wattage

I originally read this as 'poop popcorn perfectly' and immediately clicked. Oops!

I use Pop Secret in the microwave. I suggest opening the first time there is 3 seconds between pops.

Is there a brand of microwave popcorn that tastes like legit movie theater or sports event popcorn?
No, but you can make this almost as easily as you make microwave popcorn if you have an airpopper. Basically get the butter you want, add some Flavocol, and you are golden. (Flavocol is not a difficult step. It's just the flavored salt.) You don't have to do anything with an air popper (like stovetop). You just turn it on and wait for it to finish. You could go fire up Netflix or whatever in the meantime.

There is no set time to make perfect popcorn, that's how I know you haven't figured it out. You go a minimal amount of time and then keep going until the time between pops is 5-10 secs

Seriously though, stovetop is incredibly easy and doesn't take more than a few minutes longer than the microwave. If you have a big pot:

1) heat it to low-medium
2) add thin layer of oil - high heat oil like grape seed, not olive oil
3) add 3 kernels and cover, but leave a little opening for steam
4) when the kernels pop add the rest
5) some people shake it while it pops to make sure you get everything, you can more or less let it sit and wait for popping
6) ....that's it really

we simply add salt, but some people suggest adding melted ghee. Butter is too moist on its own to melt and apply. Maybe I'll try the ghee out tonight. This thread made me hungry.

Use coconut oil. It's what the theaters use, it's delicious and it's good for you!

This is the correct popcorn seasoning when you're feeling adventurous:

-Heat up the kernals evenly by giving the bag a shake every 10 seconds or so during the beginnig stage before popping happens

-If your microwave big enough, keep the bag on the edge of the plate so no part stays in a single spot for too long.

-Afterwards leave on until there hasn't been any popping for roughly 4-5 seconds.

Literally perfect every time under every situatation and microwave.

Is there a brand of microwave popcorn that tastes like legit movie theater or sports event popcorn?

it has nothing to do with the popcorn.

Step 1: Get a popcorn maker... stir crazy or whirley pop are my recs.
Step 2: Cook the popcorn in coconut oil. THAT's actually the "buttery" flavor
Step 3: add flavacol salt
Step 4: Enjoy movie theater popcorn
