O-ho. So you want a stark survival story centered around the relationship between two harrowed family members? A story set against an oppressively morbid and grotesque backdrop as the height of a miserable pandemic looms over the land, where soldiers who want to kill you lurk every possible corner, and all you have is yourself and a person you, as a growing adolescent, are still learning to love?

Hit it, Betsy.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is about an older sister (whom you control) and her younger brother trying to survive 14th century France under the shadow of both the Hundred Years' War as well as the Great Plague. Rough times!

There is an emphasis on stealth over battle, at least in the early parts(?); the two of you are not quite trained combatants or gritty rogues raised on blood money -- you're just kids. That means having to elude the threat of both the soldiers of the Inquisition and the teeming disease-carrying rats in whatever way.

Amicia is a young, headstrong girl with an assertive personality. She wants a life filled with adventure. She shows a progressive attitude, but she is also quite egocentric. She's not used to sharing or opening herself to others, which will be a real challenge for her.
Hugo's been isolated from the world since his birth. He's afflicted by a mysterious illness and takes up all of his mother's affection. It has given birth to jealousy in Amicia and contributes to creating a tangible tension between the two kids; they effectively barely know each other

A Plague Tale: Innocence Story Trailer

20 minutes of gameplay (some spoilers)

Original E3 2017 teaser

The most recent press junket for the game has been making the rounds this past few weeks, after about a year of trickling info and pre-release media attention, and has been labeled a novel and unique Hellblade-esque treatise (a thread!). Which is unfortunate (not on anybody's account) -- the cut to which it belongs being novel and unique, as it is. Because the potential for these kind of interactive templates with this breed of visual fidelity have always been there, always will be. Seeing other devs like these take those ambitions head-on give further purpose to the push, like Ico, TLOU, GoW, [fellow French dev] Quantic Dream's repertoire, Senua's Sacrifice before it, and it is great to see more such efforts emerging from the fray alongside other great games this season -- particularly in the cinematic third-person tradition. And hopefully given room to truly thrive, or at least constitute a bigger niche of a library.

It's being developed by a French dev known as Asobo Studio, mostly known for licensed Pixar adaptations, (whose games I've not played), and to suddenly transition to such a stark narrative shift is a nigh-ticklish twist. I hope it's the start of a direction that cultivates similarly rooted works. In the end I don't know if this game will be able to go the full mile in its writing, level design, or the full package, but that something like this exists and looks this promising instills hope! So here's to hoping it has a strong skeleton. Representing a transformative slice of French history through the lens of a tense, gory, short and sweet [edit: scratch that, alleged to be ten to fifteen hours(?)] survival adventure can go straight to the bowels -- literally.

From what I've seen so far I think it looks pretty amazing, but I'm naturally a bit worried about any stealth games that also rely on companion AI. We absolutely need more cinematic adventure games with unique premises like this, though.

I like everything I saw except the heavy post processing the game uses.

this is such an exciting setting/premise to me, but that trailer really doesn't give me much hope that it'll be fun to play. it looks like a combination of slow-walk segments and spider-man/asscreed stealth sequences.

gorgeous though, and like i said the setting is right up my alley. hope my skepticism can be proven wrong

Hey everyone,

Ben from Focus Home Interactive (the publisher) here, I'm part of the marketing team and have done a bit of work on Plague Tale. If anyone's got any Qs, I'd be happy to (try to) answer.

This somehow completely slipped under radar. Digging the atmosphere, premise, and characters looking at some of the clips in the OP. Thanks for the heads up!

Game looks really cool, I wonder how long it is. 8 to 10 hours would be sweet IMO.

The stealth escort trappings to which it partly belongs can be risky alright. (Amy, anyone?) But in the same time, it's that sense of ordinariness that I feel many a grounded game veers from with a hard left. TLOU is still essentially a shooter with a body count in the hundreds if you were so inclined. Just floundering to survive is a format of game I wish to see done well, ideally with more simulatory/role-play mechanics, though that is a few leagues ahead of the field atm. But indeed, hopefully it's mechanically sound enough to maintain that suspension. A little unevenness can take you out quick.

Oh mai hello Ben, neat-o to see someone from the team on Focus Home Interactive's side on 'ere!! ^^'

Anyways I haven't watched/read everything that's been released on it so may have missed it, but I've seen some vague estimates of the length. Any (un)official word on general runtime..?

What type of enhancements are there for the Xbox One X? Thanks.

Runs at upscaled 4K. Incidentally, this is always the first question I'm asked in a thread like this, I might start putting it in the original post, haha.

Hey! I meant to say, thank you very much for posting the thread, always nice to see our games with sexy OPs on Reset.

As for length, it's not a massive triple-A open-world game or anything, but some of the levels are quite open, there's puzzles, secrets and side areas, etc. I think you could power through it in 8-10 or really take your time for 15+. In that linear, single-player range, anyway.

Was reminded of this in a YT ad yesterday. Finally put it on my wanted list after having forgotten about it after their reveal trailer, which already had me interested. I feel the urge to go media blackout and because it seems like a game barely anyone would make I'm intrigued enough to buy it even if it ends up being "ambitious but flawed" and reviews lukewarmly

Saw an ad for this on YouTube the other day and thought it looked really interesting. Will check out these videos posted and am definitely going to be keeping my eye on it.

This looks so good. Thanks for putting it on my radar.

Also is there a battle royale patch coming featuring the rats?

I love the vibes of this. It's not every day we get an environmental puzzle horror narrative game. Will definitely be keeping an eye on this.

Edit: Saw the character get eaten by a swarm of rats in the IGN preview video lol.

I've thought this game looked great ever since it was first revealed. I hope it turns out to be as promising as it seemed in previews.

Neat, that's awesome to hear..! Even if it was barely double-digit range, a sturdy, linear narrative-oriented experience is a welcome fresh breeze... particularly in the current conversation. ;p

Pfft and if anything I should be thankin' you folks, the game looks like a potential gem..!! ^^' Definitely not just because of those epic rats.

Era: "We need more short single player games! They're not dead yet!"

Also Era: "Meh, it's not from my favorite AAA devs, pass!"

Whatever comes of it I do hope more games of this ilk can be given greater chance to peregrinate. Anybody with an interest in the creative prospects of single-player campaigns may be well to give the ones of today a look. *nod*

It is the kind of game that if it were developed from a AAA publisher, or it was exclusive, everyone would talk about it. Instead, now it is sadly just a pretty little game...

If anyone's got any Qs, I'd be happy to (try to) answer.

I saw that there are additional costumes for people pre-ordering. Is there an incentive to play the gama again after completion, maybe even new game plus? Do you unlock costumes? Or maybe just to make different choices if that is a thing? (i'm on media blackout so sorry if that's freely available information somewhere)

It looks like it could be pretty fantastic. definitely got my eye on it. The premise especially is great! More nuanced historical narratives please.

Photo Mode (or Nvidia Ansel support)?

We would like to have Ansel support. Photo mode isn't in the launch day version, but we understand the desire for it and agree A Plague Tale is basically a perfect candidate for photo mode.

Only you get to decide that :)

I don't believe there's a custom unlock, and we don't have a "hard mode" NG+ or something like that. While the narrative doesn't have major decision points, there is a lot of gameplay decision making in terms of what you use, where, what you craft, and how you move around the levels. There are also various collectibles that really build out the world and give more historical context, which I personally enjoy. I won't pretend we have the ridiculous replay value of a Bioware or Bethesda game (or anything even approaching the budget ;D), but if you enjoy the characters, gameplay, and/or world, I think you'll find reason to go back and replay some chapters - which we make easy with chapter select and stuff like that.

Very excited about this game. If you pre-order it at Game Mania (Netherlands/Belgium only) you get the soundtrack on vinyl as well (composed by Olivier Derivière!!!). Don't know if this pre-order bonus is offered at other retailers but might be worth looking into for game vinyl collectors out there.

Hopefully this game can find its audience unlike 11-11 Memories Retold which was also so much deserving of love and is such an ERA title but sadly nobody knows about. At least this game apparently has a good YouTube ad :P.

Thanks for your answer. I wasn't really expecting huge replay value and unlocks as those gaming times seem to be gone since the early 2000s, was just curious because of the emblems and costumes mentioned :)

If they 11-11 Memories Retold or this would be "such an ERA titles" don't you think people would be expressing their interest and hype in threads like this?

Maybe I'm just cynical, but I think majority of ERA isn't into these kinda games and are all about that blockbuster AAA R* / Naughty Dog / 4A... stuff.

No worries. We think there's still some interest in this kind of game from a wide audience, it just needs the right approach from a massively talented team with incredible art direction. Which we have, I think, haha.

And yeah Ansel support for Plague would be awesome, especially for 360 screenshots.

Greedfall is a videogame that exists and we will publish.

What, you want more?

Jokes aside, there's information on the way for it. Nothing to announce, but it's still on track for this year, and we'll be kicking into high telling-you-about-it gear soon(trademark, copywrite, etc) :)

Given the big focus on the rats, I'm curious how the game will build upon that threat/mechanic throughout. So far, it's seemed kind of simple/basic, so I'm hoping that element doesn't get repetitive

This actually got me interested in a sea of uninteresting games. Looking forward to some good story and gameplay.
